    - GUIDs as keys - definition and use Hello, I want to use GUIDs as keys for records in a number of tables for a database I'm designing. The reason- I want to be able to "merge" records from different site installations in the future and I don't want key conflicts. Starting with the schema design (sqlserver)- what is the best "type" to pick to hold the GUID? I'm thinking varchar of length 36. After I've designed the schema in SQLServer, I plan to use the server explorer and create a dataset definition for use in .Net. - Any tips for dealing with GUIDS with regard to the code the designer generates? i.e for creating/modifying and deleting records?     - ADO.NET: using xml as a database, adding rows to the xmlfile Hi, I've got a debug/learn function for doing my xml thingie. I simply want to append data to an xml file. This confuses me, i've looked at xmldocument, xmldatadocument and from what i understand a DataSet is a flexible and "easy" (if you know how) way to work with xml files. I've worked alot with ADO in VB6 so this seemed tempting (i'm still a .net noob or NOOB) I've managed to create a schema for my table and i think i know how to add the data correctly but i can't manage to update my data back to my DataSet and write the DataSet as an XMLFile. I've looked on the DataAdapter but i end up wondering how do i make an OleDB conn to my xml file and i resemble nooo this seems stupid and bigfoot print'ed since they say .net and xml is like bread and butter. I just want to use an xml file as a simple database for my app. Would anyone be so kind to help me out with a updatetable thingie ? My Code fails on the AcceptChanges which i suppose is because my DataRow isn't written back to the DataSet but how do i do that ? Please ignore the bad naming convention this code is mixed with a lot copy paste from various examples... none covers how to work with just a dataset and an xml file..     - Dataset binding to comboboxes - As many items as records?? Hi All, I have been having a hard time figuring how to approach a problem and was hoping I might be able to get some assistance. Here is my situation. I have a dataset that is based on a table in my SQL server database. I am using Databinding to bind the dataset to a series of controls on my form. A few of these controls are comboboxes. One of the comboboxes is bound the the field in the dataset that is my primary key (it's called ID). This works well for me because I can scroll through the combobox and select whichever record I want to deal with and all the controls are updated to that record when I select it. The problem however, resides with another combobox which is bound to a field in the database that can only have two (2) possible choices, Yes or No. I was expecting that this combobox would only consist of two possible choices however I am finding that there are as many "items" in the combobox as there are records in the database. Granted there are only two possible "values" (Yes or No) but they are repeated throughout the combobox. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Has anyone seen this before?     - Cast DataView as a DataTable I'm using a third-party tool that takes a DataTable as a parameter. I really need to pass it a DataView instead. When I try to explicitly cast the DataView as a DataTable I get an error that they aren't compatible data types. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do this? My last resort is to create a new DataTable object and copy the rows from the DataView into the DataTable. But this is an ugly hack and I really hope there is a better solution. Thanks.     - Multiple Parents Ok, I've already figured out that its not allowed to have 2 (or more) parents to 1 child table in .NET. (unless I'm totally misinformed). http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325695 So, how do you get around it. Surely there are plenty of you who have run into this. In my case I have 3 tables (more actually but 3 will suffice for now): PurchaseOrders, Tickets, and Items. Should be a pretty classic example. A customer walks into the shop and places an order for various items which come from several different vendors, therefore these items will belong to several different PurchaseOrders. A Ticket is created for the customer, listing all the items. Thus, a Tickets to Items relationship is implied. However, at the end of the day (or end of the week, etc) the purchaser draws up a series of PurchaseOrders. The PurchaseOrder will have all the items from a particular vendor, for all the Tickets that were generated that day (or week, etc). So, the PurchaseOrder Table needs a relationship with Items as well. Thus, 2 parents, same child. How does ADO.NET handle this? How do I handle this?     - In memory of a friend! Hello all! Not sure how this should be posted. If I understand my reading. i'll need Visual Basic .NET, ASP .NET, and ADO .NET. So I've posted this thread in all three newsgroups. I apologize up front if this was a mistake. A little background. I've got a large collection of movies in VHS and DVD formats. I've been categorizing them like they were in a database (i.e. Movie Title, Director(s), Writer(s), Cast, etc.), but using a simple text file. I have a MS Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) site, and I thought it would be a great idea to finally put the info in a formal database (I'm using SQL Server 2000 as the underlying database for WSS). A very close friend volunteered to take on this project and come up with a way to query for particular movies. His plan was to use Visual Basic .NET and what else I'm not sure. Well, the week before Xmas my friend died unexpectently. And to his memory I'd like to complete the project on my own, and maybe a little help from a couple of newsgroups. I'm just not sure where to start? I've been doing some reading and as I mentioned above, it seems I'm going to need Visual Basic .NET along with both ASP .NET and ADO .NET. Am I right in that assumption? How I envision the movie portion of the WSS site! There'd be a quick-launch link on the main page. This would take you to a page where half would be setup to search the database for a particular movie. You would put in your search criteria, Movie Title (or what you thought the title was), actor(s), or Director(s). Clicking the [SEARCH] button would bring up another page with the search results. The results of course would be hotlinked movie titles, movies that actor(s) starred, or Director(s) directed. Clicking on one of these hotlinks would take you to that particular movie page on the server. Does that make sense? The bottom of this initial WSS page would also list the alphabet. Maybe 4 rows of 5 and 1 row of 6. Clicking on these hotlinks would take you to a page with that particular alphabetical listing of movies with hotlinks to the particular movie page. I've been copying the small movie posters from imdb.com, and I've found a place where I can get movie trailers, both of which this movie page would house along with all of the other movie info. I know I'm being overly long, but I wanted to explain exactly what the plan was. Now, where do I start? I've got a little experience with Visual Basic .NET, probably enough to get me in trouble, but what else do I need to complete this project? Any help would be greatly appreciated!     - Related records - is a datarelation necessary I have a table named ProposedCosts and another table named AdditionalCosts. AdditionalCosts has a foriegn key to the ProposedCostID in the ProposedCost table. When I retrieve records out of the database, I use a SQLDAtaAdapter and the .Fill method to fill a 'ProposedCost' datatable and a 'AdditionalCost' datatable, both tables are in the same dataset. From the front end, if I wanted to add a new row to ProposedCost, that isn't any problem except for the fact that it does not generate a ProposedCostID (this is an identity key in the database). The problem is that if I want to create an 'additional cost' record, I have no ProposedCostID. What is the best way to handle a situation like this? I thought about going back to the database with the dataset and somehow adding a row to the datatable that way, but then when I finally do, do an update, won't it think the row I added is a 'new' row and not an update? I used sql server and msde. but I am on the hunt for an integrated database for a web application I want to write: what I mean is I want to have a file based DB engine (if possible) and include the file in a directory of the web app and access it. I just do not want to deal with the install of a service when redistibuting the app. I am considering ms access but I want to know if I could have multiple connections to it via ado.net since the web app will have multiple users hiting it.     - SQL Server basics I have a Dataset containing a DataTable (say, 'dt1') that has all the fields that are contained in a SQL Server database's table. In addition, it contains a field (let's call it 'HasItems') of type boolean. I want to populate 'dt1' with all the records in the SQL Server table, and populate the 'HasItems' field with True if matching records exist in another SQL Server table (actually a view), and False if no matching records exist. I could do this easily in Access, but I'm new to SQL Server, and need to know the best way to go about it.     - login failure msg Just wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this login failure. I used the data-adapter wizard and selected use an existing connection(also tried new connection that test ok). I selected use existing stored procedure, for the select operation selected the stored procedure I want to use. It created the adapter and also an SQLconnection on the page. So for some reason am getting this login failure. I am able to connect to the dbase in the solution explorer and when I look at the connection string in the data adapter I noticed there is no password value.     - Converting Recordset to DataView I originally posted this question to the vb.net newsgroup, but it was suggested that I re-post here. I have an application that was converted from VB6 to .Net. The app uses a data access layer that returns data as disconnected recordsets. I'm adding new functionality to the app and want to use .Net controls and data binding. So, I'm converting a recordset to a dataview that can be bound to a listbox control. I created an XML file of an Access Table that is filled with 400 records (using .WriteXml("c:\HospitalList.xml", XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema)). I mean possibility to use a user-defined type (Enum or other class, minding the conversion possibilities) in the XSD schema 2) Is there a simple way to force the DataGrid to perform conversions from integer values to strings, through using enums or something?     - Getting changes from the database I'm using a DataAdapter to Update and Synchronize with the database. When I do a Fill on my dataAdapter I get the changed and new records from the database (changed by other users) into my dataset but not those which have been deleted at the database. Is this the way the DataAdapter should work (don't synchronize the deleted records from the database to the dataset) or is it my fault? If this is the way the DataAdapter act's what can be done, do get completely in synch?     - Newbie: Adding new rows to dataset Hi, I have a data-entry type form I created with textboxes bound to a dataset. I can successfully pull all the correct information up and change any existing data, and navigate through each record using the BindingManagerBase.Position. What I'm trying to do now is add a row to the dataset and then move to that row with the form to add new information. I've tried declaring a new row and adding it to the dataset, as well as doing BindingManagerBase.AddNew. Each of these adds a row to the dataset, but I can't get it to show on the form. When I close the form, the database is updated, and the new row appears in the database table correctly. How do I get the form to show the added row?     - UTF8 Character Set issues with Oracle Provider We are building an application with VB.NET on the .NET Framework 1.1 and the .NET Managed Provider for Oracle. We are connecting to an Oracle 9.2.0 server on HP-UX using the 8.1.7 client. The character set on the server instance is "AL32-UTF8". When we call OracleCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters(), we get the following exception: System.Data.OracleClient.OracleException: ORA-06550: line 1, column 72: PLS-00553: character set name is not recognized ORA-06550: line 0, column 0: PL/SQL: Compilation unit analysis terminated KB 322158 seems to indicate that there are some issues when UTF character sets and NCHAR, NVARCHAR2, or NCLOB data types with the Oracle 8.1.7 client. In our case, we are using standard CHAR, VARCHAR2, and CLOB data types. If the Oracle client is upgraded to 9.2, the exception is not thrown. However, we would like to avoid upgrading the Oracle client, as there is a large number of machines with the 8.1.7 client already installed. Can anyone else shed some additional light on the issue? Anyway, quite often I am pulling data from a database, but then I need to use that data to produce more data. A simple example would be: Let's say Column1=StartDate and Column2=EndDate. In addition to displaying Column1 and Column2, I need to do some calculations and display in as Column3. The calculations are easy and can be done in the code-behind. How to display it is another question. However, they might not be math calculations. Take for example, a SQL query that returns a list of servers and then for each server I use WMI to get some additional information and then I need to display the servername (from SQL) and the OS and Service Pack Version (from WMI) on a web page. The way I have been handling it is creating a new table in memory and adding the columns from the original SQL query and then doing the calculations and adding that as a column.     - Security through stored procedures I've just started reading "Microsoft ADO.NET" by David Sheppa. One of the lines in the overview caught my eye: "Because many database administrators allow users to modify the contents of a database only through stored procedures, many developers cannot submit updates through the ADO Recordset object". This is new to me - does it mean that you could revoke UPDATE access to a database table but allow EXEC access and that the code inside the sproc carries out the update? I rather like the idea of this. I've always had a problem with the conflict between security and open access to a database. For example, our users have UPDATE access to a table as they obviously have to write updates back. However, this means that anyone with a little knowledge could use ODBC to connect to the database and write whatever they want to the database table. Which from a security/audit point of view isn't good. I was thinking about adding an encryption code to each record so that whilst we couldn't stop users changing data directly, we could at least detect when it had happened.     - autonumber problem in my datatable Hello, I wanted some help on a dataset question. I have created a dataset and datatables and used the dataadapters 'fill' method on them. In my database the primary key is an autonumber. When i use the fill method and set a datagrid source to my datatable i can see 10 rows. The rows each have a primary key value from 0 to 10 (Autonumbers). When i try to insert a new row into my datatable, the primary key autonumber seems to start at the value 0 rather than continuing from the highest number. i.e 11 onwards. 'highest already generated number' (in this case 10) + 1 ??? Hi, I have a DataSet whose default table, namely DataSet.Tables[0] which has a row for each day selected from a database, however not all the days are always there so I am iterating thro each day and if it is missing I add it to the table by way of a new row with default values.
