    - Adding a Row With an AutoIncrement Field I am trying to add a row to a table in a dataset. The table contains an ID field, which is set up as an AutoIncrement field, with AutoIncrementSeed = 1 and AutoIncrementStep = 1. I like the convenience of the following syntax: MyDataset.Tables("MyTable").Rows.Add(New Object(){"data for field1", "data for field2", "data for field3"...}) but because the first field is an AutoIncrement field, I'm not sure what to put in place of the first field. I tried vbNull, but that doesn't help. It complains on the second add that the ID already exists. How do I deal with the AutoIncrement field in an add such as the one above? Thanks.     - Help! Typed Dataset across multiple databases (e.g. IDBDataAdapte Is there a way the strongly typed dataset wizard will create classes that are usable across multiple databases? We are writing an application that can use Oracle, PostgreSQL, or Sql Server as the database. We have setup a DAL (using IDBConnection, IDBDataAdapter, etc.) to facilitate database portability. We can now use the DAL for all our database functions, which is great. However, we can't figure out how we to utilize the auto-generated strongly typed dataset classes across multiple databases. Is it possible? Our app has 1000's of columns, so this would be a MASSIVE time saver vs. creating all the classes by hand or hand-writing all the SQL. Does ADO.NET internally sets up hashtables for the columns that are used to tie tables, so that later on hashtables can be used to quickly retrieve data? Or does it just loop through data to locate the ChildRows.     - Load a string of CSV from memory into a dataset Hi Group, Here is what I'm trying to do in my application: 1. the customer uploads an encrypted file to the server (it's a ASP.NET application) 2. the uploaded file is decrypted to a comma separated list of values 3. the list is being written to a CSV file 4. the csv file is being loaded into a datatable, using OleDbDataAdapter 5. the recordset, after some checking and validation, is being written to a SQL database. Question: Is it possible to skip somehow the steps where I'm writing the comma separated list to a csv file and then reloading the list into a datatable?     - Invalid Key node inside constraint error I have an XML document that I'm reading into a dataset. I programmatically created dataadapters and constraints for all the tables and relationships and I'm able to insert all the data into the database no problem. Instead of running the code to create the constraints all the time, I used WriteXMLSchema to write out an .xsd for me that has everything already defined. Now when I read this schema back using ReadXMLSchema, I get the error: Invalid 'Key' node inside constraint named: Arrests-Inv_Holding_Facilities .NET created this .xsd for me, why can't it read it in? I've made no changes to it manually. I've seen several messages with this same question out on the web, but no answers. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? Or is it possible to install the 9.02 driver on test without disrupting the current apps that are using 8.01? - not a highly supported solution by other developers on my team.     - ADO.NET System.Data.SqlClient I'm developing web applications using Visual Studio.NET 2003 Version 7.1.3088 on two laptop configurations. One is Windows 2000 Professional, other is Windows XP SP2. Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Version 1.1.4322 SP1 (on XP Laptop), Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Version 1.1.4322 (on 2K Laptop). I have SQL Server 2000 - Version 8.00.0384 - SP4 installed on standalong machine. I've used VB.NET 2003 for over 1.5 yrs - no problems on 2K platform. I have web application connecting flawlessly to SQL server using SqlClient namespace. I have "headaches" while migrating same web application on XP platform. Continually getting message "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding". Basically SQL Server 2000 - is fully operation for all apps, includes web app on 2000 Professional development machine. Just can't get SQL connects to database on XP Sp2 platform. I feel differences in OS are causes - different DLL's, possible issue with MDAC - TDS stream issue. I've submitted 3 postings to other newsgroups. Other disagree with MDAC issue & OS issue. I guess my questions are then - What is causing this to NOT work on SP2 of XP platform - same code - etc... Just 98% of time WON'T connect - once in blue-moon connection passes with XP Sp2.     - Accessing deleted and changed rows in a DataSet I'm writing a client to connect to a legacy system (pre-.NET) which only accepts input and provides output using ADO Recordsets. I've been able to convert Recordset to DataSet, and if the DataSet has no changes I can convert back to Recordset. The problem comes when converting DataSet to Recordset when rows have been deleted or updated. The only way I could find to do the conversion involves "hand-crafting" the XML for the ADO Recordset combined with running an XSLT transform on the DataSet data. What I can't do is access the original rows in the DataSet in order to write <rs:update>, <rs:original>, and <rs:delete> elements and their child rows in the <rs:data> section. This data must be in there somewhere, otherwise how could a DataSet update a database directly? Does anyone know how I can get to it?     - Divide by Zero exception Hi there My .asp application draws data from a number of sources, converts the results to type.double and does various calculations with these figures. Because of data entry errors on the system from which some of the data is drawn (this system is unfortunately not under my control so I can not sort this problem out at source....) I occasionally get Divide by Zero Exceptions which crash my application.     - Problem with Data Refresh Hi there I have an .asp application that uses an accounting package for some of it's data. This links to a warehouse stock system. I am not running an ODBC link straight to the accounting system, but instead run a data refresh every 5 minutes that synchronises all the stock in the warehouse in to an SQL table - my .asp application links to this. I believe I am having issues with queries that are executed during this scheduled refresh of data - the application does not fail, but I am getting reports of inaccurate data resulting from queries at apparently random times of the day. Does anyone know if I am able to either lock the table during a refresh (and how my ado programming will recognise this status) so that I can catch the query and display a message along the lines of "Data refreshing, please wait" and then requery once the refresh has completed - any more practical suggestions would be musch appreciated. I have a small test application where the user can choose a table from a combo box, whereupon a DataGrid is populated with data from the chosen table. I am using a CommandBuilder to build the commands on the DataAdapter. Validation of the data added to the DataGrid is handled automatically; for instance, if I add too many characters to a column and move to the next row in the DataGrid, I get an error message with the title, 'Error when committing the row to the original data store', and the message gives details of the constraint. This is mostly what I want and I didn't have to write much code to achieve it, which is great. The trouble is that I want to make the MessageBox fit in with the rest of the application, which will have a rigorously consistent style for all GUI elements. So my question is, how can I trap this error message and package it in a way that is more in keeping with my application? The message appears on moving from an edited DataGrid row to another row. The exception thrown is of type System.ArgumentException. No matter what events I try to trap on the DataTable, I cannot get access to this exception. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Type Casting to long When we retrieve data from a int field from a datatable and if I write lValue = (long)dtTable.Rows[0]["Fld1"] it generates an error at runtime. whereas it should be done because we are converting int to long which should be possible. but if I use Convert.ToInt64 it does give any error.     - Updating joined tables Hi, I am trying to display data from two sqls tables in a datagrid, and then alow the user to make changes that update one of the tables. Currently I am bringing in two tables into a dataset, merging them and binding them to a datagrid. I then use a comand builder on one of the original sql tables in order to update it.     - How do I convert a base64 encoded bytearray? Hi! I have a webservice which queries a table in SQLServer. The table has a column, "Text", which is of datatype "image". When invoking the webmethod it returns dataset with the table included. The column is returned as a base64binary as can be seen in the declaration excerpt below: <xs:element name="text" type="xs:base64Binary" minOccurs="0" /> When I call the webservice and loops through the rows I see that the column "text" is represented as a bytearray as well. What I'd like to do is to convert this bytearray into an "ordinary" string. Please note that it must work in a .Net Compact Framework environment.     - null or DbNull or what? Hello, I am trying to find the most efficient way to send record UPDATES from a client to my webservice. I am already using GetChanged to only send the records that have actually been modified, but I would like to further reduce network traffic by not sending individual columns that were not modified. My first attempt in doing this was to use SQL stored procs that have default values that would be values that would never actually be used for these fields. The update statement then evaluates each parameter to determine whether it should really update each column. This works great on the SQL Server side, and I've discovered that by leaving the Command Parameter value as null (not DbNull), the default values would be invoked. The problem here lies in determining if a value in my DataTable is DbNull because it was set to null or if it is DbNull because it was not changed. It seems that I cannot actually set fields in a datarow to be actual null (not DbNull). Is there something I am missing here? Moreover, is there something bigger that I am missing? Is there a better solution for minimizing the amount of XML being sent from my client to my webservice? I do realize that a possible solution would be to stop sending a DataSet and just use my own XML specification that allowed for more flexibility in minimizing packets being sent.     - Reading Data From Excel Via ADO.NET I have an application reading data from an Excel file and filling a SQL Server table. When I read the Excel file, I want to be able to trim trailing spaces off the data as it's read into the dataset. I'm connecting to the Excel file via an OleDbDataAdapter & OleDbCommand object. All the code compiles and runs fine - I just want to trim any trailing spaces off of the data. However when I tried TRIM & RTRIM, I receive an error message. When I take out the TRIM or RTRIM it works fine. So the $1 million dollar question is, is there a function that can "trim" data when being read in with an OleDbDataAdapter / OleDbCommand?     - good data-driven place to store default values? so i have a database schema, a .NET object library .dll, and an ASP classic web application. i'm wondering where in this setup i should place default values for fields/columns of forms/objects/rows. SQL Sever doesn't seem like a good candidate, because i'm using stored procedures for all inserts. these procs use input parameters for each of the values in case there IS a value other than default, but since the parameters are optional, they are defined with the = null. so these mechanisms basically completely circumvent the default values, because either a value is specified by the caller of the proc, and that value is stored, or the value is not specified by the caller, and a null is stored. either way, no default values from the table definition. The object library seems like a decent place, except that i would love for it to be data driven. i suppose each object could keep track of all of its own default variables. part of the constructor could be to go find its default-value definition file, and load them up that way. does anyone foresee any major architectural problems with this? And the last option is to put the default value definitions in the ASP code somehow, probably through a constants file, and value comparisons.     - ConnectionState problem Hi, My application connects to an Access database when it is loaded, and keeps the same connection open all the time. There is logic in the code to ensure that the connection is automatically opened the first time it is used: if ((cmd.Connection.State == ConnectionState.Closed) || (cmd.Connection.State == ConnectionState.Broken)) cmd.Connection.Open(); However occasionally my application says this: System.InvalidOperationException: The connection is already Open (state=Connecting). or it might say the same but with state=Executing. But if the state is Executing, you can neither call .Open nor can you execute a query. So how can I maintain an open connection without these errors occuring? To be honest, I don't understand why it is ever in the "Exectuting" state, because it's a single threaded application and theres no way that it can be doing more than one thing at once.     - Updating typed dataset schema from code when a column is deleted I have an existing .xsd file with typed dataset information in it. I need the ability to update this existing schema information when a column is removed from one of the underlying data adapters. Currently I read the existing schema info into a temp dataset object, update the schema for the table in question by just calling MyAdapter.FillShema and passing it my temp dataset. I then write the schema file back to disk. This works great for column additions, the new columns are placed in the schema, but it does not change the schema if a column is deleted. I have a dataset which has many tables. amongst them I have 2 tables: tblJob & tblCompany In my form, I have a tab for jobs, which has a combo named "cmbCompany" which lists company name from the table Company. Now I have logic built into my application so that if the user enters a text which is not in the list, it asks the user if he wants to add it. Then it pops up another form, which populates all the information. The tblCompany has a CompanyID field which is autoincrement and set to -1 & -1. So the tblJob which has the foreign Key "CompanyID" gets "-1" saved in it. When I save the database. I get the proper ID before I merge the database, so I have to correct ID for the "tblCompany" however the foreign key in tblJob is not updated although I've set it to cascade..     - Mutating Record, maybe? Hi I'm having a problem performing updates on records in an Oracle 8.1.7 database. The table I'm updating, TABLE_1 has a update and insert trigger which updates another table, TABLE_2, which in turn updates an archive table ARCH_TABLE_2. I can perform an insert and a single update within a single transaction. But, when I try and perform an insert an update then another update the OracleDataAdapter.Update() method fails. Incidentally, the reason for performing multiple updates within a single transaction is for audit and reporting purposes against the ARCH_TABLE_2.     - Master-Detail Strategy I have a master table that I would like to display on a form with a navigator, and I would like to display the detail records in a grid for each master record. Right now, I am getting all the records for both tables using DataAdapter.Fill and a "select * from <table>" select command. I am then setting up a DataRelation in code between the two tables. The problem I am having is that it is taking up to 30 seconds to fill the detail table because of it's size. Is there a way to dynamically retrieve and display (and edit) the detail records as each master record is displayed? When I do so, I get the following error: AllowCustomPaging must be true and VirtualItemCount must be set for a DataGrid with ID dgrdTimesheet when AllowPaging is set to true and the selected datasource does not implement ICollection. If I set the datagrid's AllowCustomPaging property to true and its VirtualItemCount property to be the number of records returned by the SqlDataReader, the error disappears. SqlDataReader contains 76 rows DataGrid's page size is 10 rows DataGrid correctly shows pages 1-8 Clicking on page 1 correctly shows the first 10 records Clicking on any other page incorrectly shows the first 10 records, not 11-20, 21-30 etc. Of course, using a DataSet object instead of an SqlDataReader object cures the problem instantly, but I was wondering if there is any way to use an SqlDataReader object as the datasource of a datagrid which supports paging? this is faisal and i want to know about vb.net
Actually, i am a programmer of Visual Basic and used to work with ado in order to have connectivity with database, now i want to move on .Net api but the problem is that, i can understand the tools provided by the .net but unable to work with ado.net.
Can any Please tell me all about this.

Faisal,

ADO.NET is a significant departure from ADO. In fact, probably the only
common thing between them is

a) The word "ADO"
b) They are both for data access.

Your best bet would be to pick up a book and start reading through it.
ADO.NET in my opinion is worth reading a book about.
