    - running SQL Scripts from VB.Net - is OSQL the best way? I have written a VB.Net application which, on start up, creates a database by running numerous .SQL files using the OSQL utility. This is the code i'm using in VB.Net to run the scripts: Dim proc As New Process proc.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = True proc.StartInfo.FileName = "osql" proc.StartInfo.Arguments = " -E -i C:\SQLScript.SQL" proc.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Normal proc.Start() I checked the proc.ExitCode value, but unfortunately, this doesn't seem to tell you whether the script ran successfully or not. It always returns a 0, which indicates success. Can anyone tell me if there is a way which i could run the script from VB.Net and work out if there were errors or not? Thanking you in advance!     - TableAdapter Designer generates weird update and delete procedures Hi, I am impressed by the work you have done to simplify creation of DAL components. I especially like TableAdapters. However, I have found out that when you generate a TableAdapter in the TableAdapter Designer it creates a bit weird update and delete (SQL) procedures. Whenever a collumn is nullable it generates special parameters to signal that a given collumn should be null. It has a name which looks like this: @IsColumnNameNull but its type is the same as the type of the underlying column , instead of just making it of type int. The generated adapter code (C#) declares it as of type int, which makes it all work. But this way the SQL Server must convert the parameter value to int (0 or 1) because it compares it to 1 or 0.     - ODBC .Net Data Provider not working on production web server OK, I have a solution that works fine on my laptop and my desktop. When I tried to move the solution to the production server, I keep getting the error message ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified Although, we did download and install the driver from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6ccd8427-1017-4f33-a062-d165078e32b1&displaylang=en The kicker is that it works fine from my laptop, which during testing, acts as the web server.     - Webservices + oracle connection problem Hi, i have windows xp sp2 & visual .net 2003 and asp 1.1 iis 5.1 and oracle 10.1 and when i try to connect to database by webservice OCIEnvCreate error occures. While connecting with console application or windows application goes without any problems. I gave permission to bin directory (oci.dll). I tried to use other version of oci.dll and it didn't help.     - Question about isolation level using OracleClient library Hi, all, When I use OracleClient library to connect with Oracle Database and set transaction's isolation level to serializable level, it should can prevent phantom read from happening. But unluckily the phantom read happens. And if I use ODBC library to do all the same things as above, the phantom read will not happen. It is very confusing, and I looked for related infomation in internet, and got none. Would anybody help me and tell me why? BTW, the version of .Net Framework is 1.1, and the both versions of the oracle server and client are 9.2.1.0. Thank you in advance.     - Does ExecuteReader allow you to return a record name? Hi all, I''ve created an OleDbDataReader that will contain the number of records that the used SQL query will return. I'm then using a while loop to loop while the OleDBDataReader object has records. I would like to know does the OleDbDataReader contain the actual information on each record i.e. the fields in the database and their values? Or does the ExecuteReader command only contain the number of records present from the used SQL query and no more? Or am I going the completely wrong way about it?? I need to use the 'Name' field's value of the current OleDbDataReader record in a following (not present in code snippit) code block. I using an Access 2000 database. Thanks in advance, Steve.     - Howto obtain the credentials from a SqlConnection object Hi all, In the ConnectionString property you can set the UserName and Password to be used for the SqlConnection as well as the DataSource and Initial Catalog (and some more possible values). There are properties on the SqlConnection object which return the DataSource and the Database provided in the ConnectionString but there are no such properties for the UserName and Password. I'm creating a class which is using DTS object to generate an Excel file and I would only like to provide a SqlConnection object, a CommandText and a CommandType to the class. The DTS Connection2 object has separate properties for Datasource, Catalog, UserID and password. Now I have to provide the UserName and Password as separate parameters to the class because I can't derive them from the SqlConnection object. Parsing the ConnectionString seems a bit tricky because you can provide the username with different keywords like: "uid" or "User Id', the same goes for password. And I don't know if there are more possible keywords. Does anybody know a way to to achieve what I want?     - How to retrive schema bound with a SELECT statement columns? Hi , We are developing an application in C# to compare data retrieved by two SELECT queries. User Input for data comparision is two valid SELECT statements which returns data. Before starting the data comparison, i would like to validate the data type of all the columns which are listed in the select statment are same. For example i've the following two queries Query 1: SELECT t1.Col2, t2.Col3, t4.Col5 FROM ....... Query 2: SELECT A.Id, B.Name, C.Age FROM ..... Now i want to verify the selected columns from both the queries are having same data types and column length before extracting data for comparision. i.e i want to make sure that data type and column lenght of t1.Col2 is equal to A.Id t2.Col3 is equal to B.Name t4.Col5 is equal to C.Age. I tried working with DataAdapter.FillSchema but i'm not able to get proper information requried for validation. Most of the SQL data types are being mapped to Sytem.String and for data types i'm not able to get exact length. So i'm not able to differentiate the underlaying datatypes. please help me in validating the data types and length of colunms which are selected in the query?     - serviced component question i have a vb.net class that Implements IDisposable. now i want to make that class services, so i make it inherits servicedComponent. now i get this error message: sub 'Dispose' shadows an overridable method in a base class. To override the base method, this method must be declared 'Overrides'. now that's OK, i can declare the sub as overrides, but should i take anything else into consideration? like calling the base.dispose inside my function. must I? What I had was basically correct, but missing one line. In the Update button, after this: Me.BindingContext(DsAppointments1, "Appointments").EndCurrentEdit() THIS is required to write the data back to the DB: OleDbDataAdapter1.Update(DsAppointments1) The .net help implied that EndCurrentEdit() wrote to the DB, and didnt mention updating the adapter where it should have been mentioned.     - Related Tables in Different Databases; how to query Database1 contains a table of people with addresses (sql Server) Table: People MasterID MasterName MasterAddress1 etc. DataBase2 Contains a table of people and the property they own. (msAccess -> imported from the sqlServer but detached) Table Property PropertyID MasterID PropertyDescription, etc. I can easily put together oledbdataadaptors to fill a common dataset (dataset1) with: People Table and Property Table My task is to generate a table/view something like SELECT Property.PropertyDescription, People.MasterName, People.MasterAddress FROM Property INNER JOIN People ON Property.MasterID = People.MasterID; I'm at a loss as to what Ado.net widget, and/or process to use to do this. It would be easy if they came from the same database (they sorta do but we can't go there) ;>. The only approach I can dream up is to create a temp table in one of the databases of the data from the other then do a query, but for several reasons, I would like to find a more 'elegant' way to do this. I typically create classes to represent my database tables, are those "business objects"? I also have a View class which creates a DataView from the DataTable that the Model passes it. The view class then has methods to filter the contents of the DataView so that the user can narrow down the list to the items they are interested in. This all works fine as long as I only have a single instance of the View class, however whenever I create a second instance of the view class and have it make its DataView use the same DataTable I find that any filter applied to the DataView in one window is also applied to the DataView in the other form. The references in VS.NET show these assemblies (common, configuration, and data) as version 1.2.0.0 and they are copied local to the web app (copied to its bin folder). I can't figure out why the Pre-bind state information is referencing Version=1.1.0.0. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I was able to use these assemblies as "weakly named", but they are used in a work project by an assembly that is strongly named, so I needed to make them that way as well. Thanks!     - Displaying Select columns(windows forms app) This is really stumping me. I have a dataset where I compute certain columns because I need to reorganize the data to a certain format, but I need to take the new columns and put them into a new dataset. I have a custom control where a user performs some actions and it combines certain columns or at least creates a new one with a name I can use. What I need is to bind a dataset to a grid with only the computed columns. I thought I would create a new DS and merge it with the doctored one, but no go, empty values with only the column headers.     - "Timeout expired" in ADO.NET Hi, I've sent a similar post earlier - but after no more luck and a lot more frustration, I am reposting the issue with some additional information. It's regarding several web applications on the same server, connecting to a SQL Server on another server. I keep getting the following exception when accessing the database: ----- System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---- I am currently using the following code to connect, but I've had the same problem with all the different code snippets I've tried, so I doubt the problem lies herein: ----- using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString)) { connection.Open(); .... data code .... connection.Close(); } ----- The problem happens 1-5 times, after I refresh the page enough times, it usually goes through. I've seen a number of potential solutions to the problem - but none of them fits the problem. I usually get the exception after not using the system for a while, but I haven't experienced when the system is "in use", i.e. when the previous request was no more than a couple of minutes ago, and no recompile of the application has been done. I _don't_ get enough connections to exceed the maximum - far from it (when I don't get the exception, the connection pooling seems to work fine). The exception is thrown instantly, not after the default 30 second timeout. And after I had accidentally misconfigured the authentication in the web application, the user didn't have access - I got "Login failed for user (null)" - what's odd was that I _still_ got the "Timeout expired" exception 4-5 times before I finally got the expected "Login failed" exception. The "Timeout expired" exception gets thrown even before I successfully connect to the database! Suggestions are very welcome, I've been struggling with this problem off and on for several weeks now. It's only a big nuisance during development, but naturally, it's a real showstopper for going into production with the application(s). I can't seem to connect to my Oracle DB. I have Oracle 9.2 installed on
another server to which I have mapped my local drive 'u' to. I have
u:/ora92_oem in my path. I have reset the permissions for 'Authenticated
Users' on the Oracle home directory. But I still get the above error. If I
install Oracle 9.2. client locally then I can connect just fine. Is there
some reason that I cannot use the Oracle client from another server?
