 - How do I update child keys when I update their string data? I'm new to VB .NET and I've made an Access database with several one-to-many relationships. I want to display the data in a datagrid and give users the ability to edit the database. It's simple enough to import the database into a DataSet and display the string data that the keys point to using SQL INNER JOIN statements, but once the data has been updated, how do I use the new string data values to update the child keys that need to be returned to the database?  - Problems with Password Protected Access DB I can access a password protected mdb file just fine when I write a VB dotnet windows application. However using the same connection string and running in a VB dotnet web application I get an exception: "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\fpdb\NewGoodGas.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data." It is not already opened so it must be the permission thing. Any ideas? Dan P.S.  - SP fails, but OleDbCommand does not throw error! BlankI have found a major problem with the OleDb portion of ADO.NET. If you are using it to call a stored procedure and the procedure has an internal error of some type, the sp will fail, but the OleDbCommand object will not throw any type of error. For example, I have a proc that does an insert and I pass in a value for one of the parameters that will cause a foreign key violation. The call the proc will complete but nothing will be inserted. I can create that same insert statement and call it with an OleDbCommand object and will get the error.  - Parameters vs. Dynamic SQL Ok I know the pro's and con's of this subject http://www.knowdotnet.com/articles/dynamisql.html I'm trying to convert my colleagues, but they are stuck on one thing = with dynamic sql, when they have a problem it is much easier to get the = exact view of the sql statement with the values they've loaded onto it = when they debug. So if they see an error they can cut/paste the entire = string to query analyzer and investigate. Is there an easy way to do this when using parameters.  - many-to-many relationships (m:n) Hi, is there anybody out there knowing about a good way (best practice) or ressource describing how to display and manage a many-to-many relationship on a WinForm? I have exactly the same situation reflected in the MS 'pubs' sample-db. There are authors and books. An author could have written many books and a book could have been written by many authors. The relationship is held in the titleauthor table. I'd like to have a WinForm where I can select a book and it shows me the corresponding authors. How to do that? Additionally I'd like to have the opportunity to add authors to a book while keeping track of the order attribute (reflected in the titleauthor.au_ord column). Any suggestions?  - MS Oracle Client - OCI throws "Specified module could not be found Hi, We are trying to connect oracle 9i database through windows services application using ADO.NET [MS Oracle Client]. When the service tries to connect oracle 9i database, OCI.DLL throws an exception as "The specified module could not be found". The same code is working good when we run as a windows application or web application. The issue is only when we call the same code from windows services.  - DataSet Foreign Key Constraint Error I have a dataset with a parent table and 3 child tables. The dataset is filled and manipulated on one particular web page. During the user interaction one of the child tables can have records inserted,edited, or deleted. Upon clicking save I call the Update method of my dataAdapter mapped to the child table in my db and pass the dataset childtable in as a parameter. I'm getting an inconsistent foreign key constraint error. The error is telling me that a certain child key value(1768) must exist in the parent table. The value I'm being given is the parent primary key of one of the records in my database. The strange thing is upon entry into the aspx page an entirely different parent record and related children records were loaded into the dataset. How am I getting this rogue child record in my dataset for an entirely different parent record than the one I'me inserting child records for? I thought I may be loading my dataset with more child rows than I wanted but my dataset should give the same foreign key constraint error if I try loading rogue child records without the parent record in the parent datatable. Anyone seen this type of bahavior before? I had a hunch that the auto generated SELECT statement appended to the INSERT statement of my dataadapter may be causing the issue so I got rid of it. Seems to have solved the problem, but I would like to know if this truly is the solution, or if I'm missing something else?  - error handling when updating a datasource via a data adapter i'm updating a table using a data adapter and stored procedure as it's insert/update commands. in certain cases, i would like the stored procedure to throw an exception and fail -- or just return an error, and then i want to catch the exception at the .net application layer. how is the best way to handle this? i don't mind if the entire update fails, rather than just one of the updated rows in the dataset. i would just like to handle it simply. i wasn't successful with the docs on this one. much appreciated, matthew Tag: Sync with desktop app Tag: 94950

 - SQL Server and MS VS 2003 ADO.Net I have downloaded SQL Server MSDE. I am trying to create a data adapter and a connection object. The server explorer shows the SQL Server with the pubs database loaded. When I drag the adapter onto the form the wizard starts. Thing is on the connections tab the fields are blank. Supposedly the database and server should be listed on the tab and recognised by my computer. I have tried the other adapters. Is the reason the this is so is because of a security issue?  - Array to Database Hi, I want to store a multi-dimensioned array to the database. For the application i am writing, it is not necessary to store this data in a row/column format. So in other words, i want to store it as 1 chunk of binary data. Is it possible to store a 2-dim array in a binary format in an image field (or some other field). If so, are there examples of how to do this anywhere? Additionally, how would i retrieve this data and store it back into a 2-dim array? Lastly, can I assume that I can pass the data to a stored proc in the same way that i would call an INSERT statement (w/ out using a stored proc)?  - Transforming a typed dataset Hello, I need to reorder a Typed DataSet in memory using an Xsl Transform. Most of the examples use stream which write to the hard disk or xml file. I want to do this in memory and then write the resulting Typed Dataset into a Session object which will be reused on multiple postbacks and then finally saved when editing is done. Get various problems depending on what objects I use, rather than go through each one I will post what I have and see if anyone can suggest where to go from here. Here's a simplified schema: Member [MemberID(PK), FirstName, LastName, FacultyID(FK)] Faculty [FacultyID(PK), Name] I have a 1:n DataRelation between those tables named 'Faculty_Member': Faculty(1) ---> (n)Member Now the problem: I have a WinForm for editing the Members. Also important is that I'm using a DataView on the Member-table. I'd like to have a ComboBox for choosing the Faculty a Member belongs to. I don't know how to bind the combobox so it will display Faculty.Name, use Faculty.FacultyID as value and then propagate the changes made into the Member.FacultyID. Also when the CurrencyManager of the DataView changes its position I want the combobox to display the Faculty of that member. How do I get this to work?  - INSERT statement fails in Datagrid Hi I have hardcoded method to populate (Select), delete and update a database table through a datagrid, these 3 operations work, but all inserts fail. I have noted that when i add a row to the datagrid (insert), all columns have a defult value of (null) assigned to them prior to the insert. Once i have added my data, the insert still fails - even if i assign the next number in sequence to the primary key field. The error generated is a system error.  - Updating Database I need help. I am trying to figure out the best way to uodate a database with information. I am gathering my information from text fields on a form and I just want to insert them into the database that I have. I tried builing the SQL string and then adding it to a command object and then executing a non query but .NET does not seem to like this approach. I have been reviewing the various VB .NET manuals and they seem to want me to fill a dataset. Can this be done without the dataset? Would I be better off just sticking with regular ADO for this kind of operation? In the underlying Access database these same relationships are also defined. The KeywordSet table is bound to 3 textboxes and a checkbox. The child tables are bound to grids.  - dataset.writexml and diffgrams, not writing well formed xml Hello, I am using vb.net and trying to write a local copy of a strongly typed dataset as a diffgram when the user is offline, so that when they connect to the server again their changes can be sent back. I am writing the diffgram using: dataset.writexml(filename,xmlwritemode.diffgram). If I load the original data from the server, then write it as a diffgram, then exit, then run the program again (this time offline) and load the diffgram, all works fine. However, if I then write the diffgram again, from the same dataset but this time with the local copy of the data (which has just been loaded from the diffgram), then exit, then run the program again and try and load the diffgram I get an xmlexception with errorcode "Xml_badnamechar" and the message "The ':' character, hexadecimal value 0x3A, cannot be included in a name. Line 9983, position 49." This is presumably because one of my field names includes a ':' (which I now suspect may have been a mistake!). But why does it not cause a problem the first time round, and is there anyway of making writexml encode the offending characters?  - Problem with DataView.Add() : the new item isn't shown/focused in Hi, I have a real serious problem I can't figure out myself. Here's the pretty plain scenario: I have a DataSet with one table. I created a DataView on that table. I have a Listbox bound to the DataView to select items to display and edit in a couple of TextBoxes. So far everything is fine. Now I'd like to add a button that allows the user to add an item to the list. In the event handler of the button click I call the Add()-method of the DataView. Unfortunately nothing happens to the UI visually. The selected item in the list stays unchanged. I can select the newly added 'empty' item manually at the bottom of the list though. But the TextBoxes still show all the details of the last selected 'real' item. When I press the add-button I would like to have the newly added item (row) selected in the ListBox automatically and all the TextBoxes blanked out. That's exactly the result that I got when I dropped the DataView and bound all controls to the DataTable of the DataSet directly. I just don't understand it. But I need to use a DataView so I will be able to filter the data that will be displayed. Oh, I might mention that there is NO RowFilter set on the DataView (yet) that might prevent the newly added row from showing. Can somebody please help me?! I would really appreciate it. We have an app with access db backend which is used to enter daily orders.
Is it possible to upload these orders daily to a windows mobile 2003 device
(we are using xda http://www.my-xda.com/), to allow each client to sign
their order on delivery on the wm2003 device and then download all accepted
orders back to the desktop app? What I am not sure is how to upload/download
data from desktop (or server) to the wm2003 device and how to detect and
record client signature.

The xda's connect to individual PCs through usb and also connect to the
windows 2003 server uisng gprs.
