 - problem referencing field in sqldatareader I have a db with 4 fields (id,field1, field2,field3). I populate a datareader (named dr) with this sql select * from table where id=2 Now i want to pre-set a textbox with the info in field1. Seems like this should work TextBox5.text=dr("field1") i keep getting this error Exception Details: System.InvalidOperationException: Invalid attempt to read when no data is present. So the first assumption is i've selected a row that doesn't exist or that has no info in field1 BUT if i bind the datareader to a datagrid i see the following info id field1 field2 field3 2 sdf dgfsdg Choose where isn't my reference working?  - Inputoutput Params I guess this is bad practice but i have an SQL 2000 SP that uses a single varchar(100) parameter for input and output. I would like to use an SQLcommand object to call it but this doesn't seem to work, here's my code: SqlParameter ParamSessionID = new SqlParameter("@SessionID", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100); ParamSessionID.Direction = ParameterDirection.InputOutput; Comm1.Parameters.Add(ParamSessionID); Comm1.Parameters["@SessionID"].Value = m_currentPage.Session.SessionID; Comm1.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; Conn.Open(); Comm1.ExecuteScalar(); The error i get is 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: String or binary data would be truncated.' Using the debugger i can see the value of the parameteris as a 25 charected string. SQL profiler shows the following command being issued: declare @P1 varchar(100) set @P1=NULL exec sp_CevasSessionCreate @SessionID = @P1 output select @P1 This seems to suggest that SQLClient doesn't implement InputOutput as expected, i could get the data by setting the commandtype to text and using ExecuteScalar but it would be nice to do this via the command object.  - DataAdapter Config Wizard misery We tried using that Config Wizard, but when a query changes, all the update logic goes haywire. So we went back to manually doing things: 1. We have no datasets dragged-and-dropped in Visual Studio. They are all defined in the code, generated at runtime. 2. when a user updates or hits a 'delete' button next to a row in a datagrid, we call a webservice. In there, we coded insert, update & delete functionality. THE PROBLEM: I am looking for a way to have .NET generate its own update / delete / insert statements. BUT, I don't want to use that DataAdapter Configuration Wizard because if we change around a field in the db, everything breaks and there's too much going on under the hood to fix it. If a query changes in our dataset, I would like the update logic to automatically change as well. I've been looking at CommandBuilder -- is this something good to use? In order to use it, do I need to define the dataset at Design Time (visually drag it on to the web service etc) ?  - Error Message -- Help I built and ran my program. I got a Microsoft Development Environment message saying "An unhandled exception of type 'System.ArgumentException' occured in mscorlib.dll Additional information:Invalid URL." Plus it is highlighting 'MyBase.NEW()' in the Public Sub New() subroutine in the Declarations. What do I do to fix this problem? Would someone please help me.  - Writing XML file Hi all, I have a small problem in writing XML file from VB.net. I am trying to write the XML file using dataset. I am able to write the XML in sequential way(one node after other). I can write in the hierarchial(tree) structure also but only by using datagrid. But I would like to write the XML file without using datagrid but just the grid. I am sending the sample.  - Problem using OLEDB connector Hi, I am trying to insert data into an Excel sheet using Microsoft Jet OLE DB 4.0 driver. One of the fields is exceeding 255 characters. I get the error: "The field is too small to accept the amount of data you attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data" This is surely not a problem with Excel since I put in the data manually. Please let me know if we have a solution/workaround for this. Thanks, Pranav.  - Correct SP:s not executing I often use ADO.NET and SP:s, but now I'm stuck after spending all yesterday on two issues 1) ARITHABORT A form calls SP to insert a record, but executing it only results in the following message :"Insert failed becase the following SET options have incorrect settings 'ARITHABORT'". I've checked the SQL Server documentation and can't see how it at all applies in this case. Tracing the command in SQL Profiler this is what it looks like exec insertReportPeriodExchangeRates @FromCurrencyID = N'GBP', @ToCurrencyID = N'USD', @ExchangeRate = 1.600000, @ReportPeriodID = N'2004Q3', @ReportPeriodExchangeRateID = @P1 output, @TimeStamp = @P2 output If I execute that command from SQL Analyzer it works just fine. No error message 2) .SP does not execute at all Another form calls a SP to delete a record, but the SP is never executed! How is that possible? Tracing the command in SQL Profiler this is what it looks like exec deleteReportPeriods @Original_ReportPeriodID = N'2003Q5', @Timestamp = 0x00000000000083C1 If I execute that command from SQL Analyzer it works just fine. All in all about 200 SP:s are called in the application, and these are the only one that failing. Again, if I run them from SQL Analyzer they execute correctly, so there is something odd happing in ADO:NET. All the commands are executed from inherited forms. Any ideas where to look?  - Concurrency violation: the DeleteCommand affected 0 records ----------------------------------------------------------------- The PK in the oledbdeletecommand.parameters collection *appears* to have the appropriate Primary Key to look for to delete, so I'm not sure why it's not able to find the record to delete... After reloading the master form, the datarow deletes and the dataadapter.update(me.ds) goes just fine. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I have two forms in a master/detail relationship, with the master form's dataset shared with the detail form. I use the form's currencymanagers to synch the detail record, add a new row, etc. The database is Access, using the Jet driver. For some reason, it works only for tables without spaces in their names: There are four tables: "test 1" "test2" "test 3" and "test4" each with fields word, pos, and meaning.  - Why aren't there any interfaces?? I'm working with DataSets in my code and cannot find a suitable Interface to reference. As a work-around, I've written an Interface (IDataSet) that defines all of the public method signatures of a DataSet class. A custom class (DataSetExt) implements that Interface and delegates public method calls to *base*. I know that in taking this approach I've left myself open to a slew of potential problems especially if the signatures of the DataSet class change.  - Updating and Access table with more than 127 columns Due to an existing limitation of Access, you cannot issue an UPDATE query with more than 127 fields (Access has a limit of 255 fields and during an update query, both the column your are updating and the value your are inserting are treated as fields, which therefore limits you to having 127 columns in your query). ADO didn't have a problem with this if you used a connected recordset (I'm assuming because it uses cursors or something). Since updates are submitted via UPDATE queries in ADO.NET this becomes an issue. Making the table have less than 127 columns is not an option as there are existing implmentations of the database (using old clients that used VB and ADO that worked...). Only updating the 'changed' fields does not solve the problem as the problem still exists when you change more thant 127 fields... There are issues with splitting the UPDATE into 127 field chucks if some of the fields more then one chunk are marked as 'required'. My question is, is there any way to deal with this issue in ADO.NET? I don't want to have to resort to using interop and old ADO recordsets but it appears to me like this is the only way to deal with this issue in a generic way. Is there any way in .Net I can get the *same* performance that I get from QA? The same problem happens in VB6 using recordsets - the 4 second query takes 62 seconds. When I try to 1) Preview Data or 2) Generate DataSet or 3) look at the Mapping collection in the DA Properties I get "Unspecified Error".
