    - TextBox databinding (using endcurrentedit) Hi, I have a .NET textbox bound to a DataColumn (String data type). What I want is that when the the user leaves the focus from the textbox, the changes are automatically updated to the the DataTable (ie containing the Datacolumn to which the textbix is bound). The method I use is to call the 'EndCurrentEdit' method for the corresponding CurrencyManager. This method works fine except under the following condition: The textbox undergoes a modification such that the length of the Text property in the TextBox does not change (ie is the same as that of the String in the DataColumn). This happens for example when a user makes a type and changes one letter (or two) instead of adding new words or deleting words. In this case, the datarowview (referenced by the 'Current' property in the corresponding CurrencyManager) is not in edit mode (ie 'IsEdit' is false). Calling 'EndCurrentEdit' will not update the DataColumn at all. Can anyone confirm this is a .NET bug? Is there a workaround for this? Does this happen in any other .Net controls? Thanks in advance.     - Multiple Fill() calls crash system I'm using ODBC with MySQL, and am having difficulties updating a DataSet when using a parameterized query multiple times. The SELECT queries I'm using work fine with multiple Fill() commands if they don't have parameters, but the param. versions generate the following ODBC error when run the second time: [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver][mysqld-3.23.40-nt] SQLBindParameter not used for all parameters I've tried calling Clear() on the DataSet to no avail. In stepping through the code, I've found that everything is initialized and all parameters have values, the only difference seems to be that a few internal variables of OdbcParameterCollection named CollectionIsBound and BindingIsValid start out False before the first Fill() and end up True after it. Furthermore, and ODBC trace shows that before the first Fill(), there are some calls to: SQLBindParameter. Before the second Fill(), there are no such calls.     - SQL Server Desktop Installation I recently bought a copy of Visual C#.NET Deluxe Learning addition. I was under the impression that this comes with SQL Server Desktop Engine. I installed everything I should have (I think), but when I type the commands to grant access to SQL at the DOS prompt, it tells me that SQL Server doesn't exist. The actual error message reads as follows: [DBMSLCPN]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. [DBMSLCPN]ConnectionOpen (Connect()). The problem might be that I also bought a learning addtion of Visual Basic.NET, and it told me it was installing "different" components than those already installed. However, I have two DIFFERENT installations of the .NET framework now; one that allows for C# development and one that allows for VB development. I can't imagine that ALL components were overwritten.     - No Results Hello, I have looked at this and then looked at it somemore, but I can't see anything wrong... Here is my senario. I wrote a stored procedure to return information about the parms in a stored procedure. The idea being is that I will build all my Parameters for any stored procedure mechanically. I run this procedure in Query Analyzer and it runs fine I run the procedure in VS.Net as a stand alone proc and it runs just fine (says it returned 2 rows). I run the same procedure in a C# program, and it executes but no results ever comeback. I get a return code of 0, but no results. I put some code in and wrote all all the parm names and their values in the debug window, cut and pasted those values into Query Analyzer and ran those exact same parm names and values - and it ran fine - bringing back results. The only difference is that there were two parms in which I loaded "DBNull.Value" and I had to type "null" in query analzer. I have tried using a DataReader and a DataAdapter with each running successfully, but still no rows. How in the world could it run everywhere else other in my c# code? Here is some code...     - Connection won't disappear from SQL Server until app closes I have no problems connecting to SQL Server 2000 from VB.net and using all it's functions. However, when I close the connection, it stays active on the server until the application is closed. I have tried running commands with the drop connection parameter, closing the connection with close, dispose and setting it to nothing. Here is a sample of the code. The results of the code below is that the connection stays active. Is there a setting in VB, ADO.NET or SQL Server I can tweak to fix this? thanks in advance! SqlConnection throws an exception when disposed if it is manually enlisted in a distributed transaction: System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid. The problem seems to be that the transactions created by my DTC doesn't support IConnectionPoint (I use Windows XP pro). I guess that the connection point is used to get a notification when the transaction ends and it is safe to return the connection to the connection pool. (OracleClient doesn't fail (the same way). It doesn't need the connection point. It returns connections directly to the connection pool when the they are disposed even if they still participate in a distributed transaction!) Is this a bug in SqlConnection, the SqlClient connection pool, the DTC or my code? Below is a short sample that generates the error. I need to enlist in the distributed transaction manually, because I want to use distributed transactions without using COM+. Any suggestions?     - DataReader Hello, I am transitioning from VB to C# and I can't tell if my problem is to do with the format of my command or something else. I am getting an error of "Object reference not set to an instance of the object" when it hits this line of code.. int rtnValue = (int) cmd.Parameters["@RETURN_VALUE"].Value; I set my Parameter up as follows: cmd.Parameters.Add("@RETURN_VALUE",SqlDbType.Int).Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue ; I used a "foreach" to loop through each of my parms, with the @RETURN_VALUE being the last one. Each time this loop generates the same error when it gets to the "@RETURN_VALUE". I do not see anything wrong with how I have set it up.     - Multiple transactions on the same connection? Hi, Wanted to know if I can have multiple transactions over the same connection. I am planning to have only one connection object in my application. For multiple users I want to begin different transctions over the same connection. I would be storing the transaction objects by userid in a hashtable. All the methods would then take in the userid and also know the right transaction object to be associated to the command object.     - Updating hierarchical data I'm working with the Northwind database tables 'Customers', 'Orders', and 'Order Details': 'CustomerID' relates 'Orders' to 'Customers', and 'OrderID' relates 'Order Details' to 'Orders'. For displaying this hierarchical data I create a DataSet, append and fill a DataTable for each database table, and finally set up two Relations. Say, I want to bind the dataset to a flat (WebForms) DataGrid where each row consists of the columns 'CompanyName' (from table 'Customers'), 'OrderDate' (from table 'Orders'), and 'Quantity' (from table 'Order Details'). The grid should be editable, i.e. each data modification should be send back to the database. Are there any guidelines for implementing this efficiently? Is it possible to bind datagrid columns to different DataTables (which in turn belong to the same DataSet)? How can I retain the relationship between columns and DataTable items?     - Problem w/ SQL server's default value Hi all, I have a problem when creating a new record in SQL database when the column is Non-Nullable w/ default value. What I did was create SqlDataAdapter and DataSet, filled the DataSet w/ data AND schema. However, when I try to create a record with those default columns empty (i.e. not assigning value to them), the Update method of Adapter raises an exception that I am trying to creating a record w/ the non-nullable column set to null, even tho I have create a default value for them in Sql server.     - Importing XML data into SQL Server table. I just converted an Access 2002 application into VB.NET (don't ask). VBA in Access has a nifty command for importing XML into an Access table called, unsurprisingly ImportXML(). It works like this: Application.ImportXML ([XML Filename]). The table name is a field in the .xml file. So, my question is, how do I do this in VB.NET using ADO.NET into SQL Server? There's a DataSet command called ReadXml that (supposedly) loads a DataSet with data from a .xml file. But how do I save that data in my SQL Server database? I've tried this: Dim da As DataAdapter = New DataAdapter("SELECT * FROM [tblName]", sqlDBConn) Dim ds As New DataSet ds.ReadXml([XML Filename]) da.Update(ds) ...to no avail.     - ADO.NET Behavior Hello, I am developing a web-based application for filtering rows of data in a datagrid and am running into a problem with deployment of the app. The application has a DropDownList that is populated from an SQLReader from a SQL 2000 Database. Once an item is selected from the DropDownList, the web site performs a postback then populates a DataGrid from another SQLReader that is filtered on the SelectedItem.value from the DropDownList. It is a fairly simple application and it works fine on my test box. However, when I copy the project to the server and try to execute it, the DropDownList does not populate, it is just blank, I do not get any warnings, errors, etc... My Machine is a 3.2Ghz, 1GB Ram, Windows XP Pro SP1 with Visual Studio .NET 2003, Framework 1.1. It also has an installation of Macromedia ColdFusion 5 Server, but that is not used often. It also has VirusScan 7.1 Enterprise for Scanning. The server is Dual 1Ghz with 2GB Ram, Windows 2000 server, .NET Framework 1.1, and ColdFusion 5 Server. Unlike my box, this version of ColdFuction is highly utilized. It also has VirusScan 4.5.1 for Scanning. I am stumped since the configurations are so similar. Also both boxes are at the latest system patches and have ADO 2.7 SP1 and the Microsoft SQL 2000 Client tools installed. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appriciate any input.     - This row has been removed from a table and does not have any data. BeginEdit() will allow creation of new data in this row. I receive this message when I try to execute a valid delete command against a dataset for which I have marked a row as Deleted. I have been struggling with this for a couple of days, and every bit of the documentation say that it should work.     - Thoughts/advice on select optimizations I'm looking for thoughts/advice on how to build the fastest search + (paged) results-page in an .NET + SQL Server 2000 environment. I hope this is the proper group for this, otherwise i appologize for the spam. I have one table with around 100.000 records containing some text fields. What i need to do is free-text search through these records, and return a paged result to the client. The user should be able to select which field to sort by. I'm estimating 10.000 concurrent users on the system. My initial approach to this would be to do the initial search once (selecting records using a full-text indexing), and throw the result into a TEMP table. Each paged result the user requests would then be taken from this table, using DataAdapter.Fill(DataSet, startRecord, numberOfRecords) I am, however, not sure if this is the right approach. Not using a TEMP table would probably increase performance on the first results page, but I would assume the TEMP table helps decrease system load a lot on subsequent page requests. Also, I'm not completely sure if DataAdapter.Fill with startrecord, numberofrecords does only transfers the selected records to the web server, or if the entire resultset is transfered to the webserver, and the dataset THEN populated with the selected records.     - More XML Miha, First, thanks for your help. Without it, I would still be running in circles. I created the date datatypes as varchar(10) in the dataset. Of course in the table they are datetime. The problem I am having is I cannot get the dates to insert. All it does is put in null values. The XML document looks fine.     - Building parameters type conversion question. Im attempting to use the datareader.getschema table in order to create the schema table which supposedly produces a reference to the essential values. I will be able to map most of the SQLparameters using the values from the "DataType" and ColumnSize" but will not be able to differentiate between the char and nchar, varchar and nvarchar, and text and ntext values. I notice the "ProviderType" column probably refers to the sql data type and hesitate to use it for fear of changes down the road. Any way to truly map the required SqlParameter.dbtype or sqlparameter.sqldbtype from the datareader.getschema values or from a datatable created with fillschema using a dataadapter? I found a lot on the site of George shepherd, but it wasn't really what I was looking for: I found there: How can I change the font used in a Gridcell on a cell by cell or row by row basis. Wih this code I am able to change the Font/Background/... based on the position of the field (column and row).
