    - How do i move an SQLDatabase to another location? Hello. I realize my other post was a bit lengthy, so i'd like to repost this question. Developing VS2005, SP1, .NET 2.0, VB Windows form program on WIN XP Pro, SP2. It has a Dataset with two tables using an SQL 9.0 Server Express. After creating a new database from the VS server explorer, it seems that the new database always resides in \C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. When i create the datasource, it asks if i want to copy it to my project. If i answer yes, i cannot update the database. How do i move the database to another location?     - the insert s successful, but nothing changes in DB! Hey, this code seems to work fine, since there is no rows in the DB, it does the INSERT statement. then it proceeds to the second update statement and works great. but nothing is actually inserted into the database. its sql 2005, and this is .net 2.0 in C#. any ideas?     - Child Aggregate Filter Not Recognising Newly Added Child Rows (ADO.NET 2.0 Dataset) The problem is simple: Astonishingly, it seems that in an ADO.NET 2.0 dataset, adding new rows to a child table does not seem to immediately reflect in any aggregate filter placed upon the parent table. For simplicity I have written some code below for a simple .NET 2.0 winforms app and a very basic stongly typed dataset 'MyDataset'. Three questions: 1) Is this a bug or can anybody tell me if I am missing anything? 2) If it is a bug, is it a known bug with ADO.NET 2.0 (I have previously had similar issues with 1.1, but I thought these were supposed to have been fixed), or a is it a 'feature'? 3) Is there any elegent workaround to ensure the parent filter always returns the correct result? ( i.e. a way to quickly refresh the filter's/index's memory without resorting to repopulating the entire parent table every time a child row is added). I have now decided to try and use Result sets in my application but I am not sure on how to handle this.     - ORA-00917 missing comma when using OleDb to insert chinese character I have a program using OleDbCommand to insert some chinese character information into Oracle Database. It runs normal except when data contains a particular chinese character "=A6=E2" and the exception message is ORA-00917 missing comma. This is so strange for me since this is a very simple chinese character and it could be inserted when I tested with other applications(i.e. Oracle Financials).     - Problems Updating Access Table I'm fairly new to VB.Net 2005 development and I am in need of updating MS Access 2000 data via code. This was easy to do in my prior programming language, but I am stuck here. :( I am using the following test code that when a button is pushed, the contents of the Customer_ID field is changed. Well, it does change. I have a datagrid on Windows Form connected to an Access database and the chage occurs, but is not saved. When I exit the program and re-run it, the old data remains.     - How do i move this stuff to a client site? Hello. Developing VS2005, SP1, .NET 2.0, VB Windows form program on WIN XP Pro, SP2. It has a Dataset with two tables using an SQL 9.0 Server Express. I just spent the whole day trying to figure out why my program stopped updating the database when it was working perfectly fine last night. It was working exactly the way i wanted it to, but i had to be a real smart guy and try to move the database from the \C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data folder to where my VS program was, so that when i go to my clients to install everything, i wouldn't have to track down files in more than one location. Boy, i thought i was going to be so efficient. After i did that, everytime i tried a test, it would not update the database even though it was not giving me errors. I even watched it go through the code and not error out on the add rows etc. I ran the Show Table Data in server explorer and the Preview Data in DataSet designer and no records would show up. When i ran the Preview Data from the data source window, it would always give this error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\INVHST.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." Well, it turns out that after moving the database back to the original folder, everything ran fine again. I can't explain why it would not work after moving the database to a different location. Which leads me to a question. How am i going to bring this stuff to a client and install it there so that i don't run into this problem there? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.     - A thorny issue regarding composite keys in a typed dataset Hello group: Given a data table in a typed dataset with a composite key made up of 2 integer fields, what approaches have people taken with regard to editing them? The following might help describe the situation better. Situation: I have a grid view displaying some customer configuration information about which county they live in, product shipping cost adjustments, etc... The grid view can be edited and is bound to an object data source which brokers communication to a web service. The data table 's key is made up of a customer id (cannot be edited by the grid obviously) and a county id. The county id is edited as a dropdownlist when the grid goes into edit mode. When the changes are pushed to the object data source, its update method retrieves the row in memory that is being edited, changes the relevant fields, including county id if it is changed, and pushes those changes to the webservice as a diff gram. The problem comes when the adapter on the web service goes to update the changed row via the 'update' method. Since the composite key is made up of both the customer id (no problems there) and the county id (which *might* be changed depending on whether or not the user changed the county value), there is a possibility the stored proc will never match the row being updated on account of the fact that the PK is now different (e.g. - a different county id). Possible resolution: Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with this problem? Some things that jump to mind for me: 1) Modify the sp and the datatable by adding a column to the table that is the equivalent of old county id or something and adding a parameter to the sp that uses the old id value to find the row to update. 2) Not handling this particular update via an adapter, but instead through a series of synchronous calls as each client-side row is changed. 3) Add a surrogate key (autonumbered) in both the db and the typed dataset and use this for additions/changes on the client 4) Add the data column from option 1 client-side thus making it uptyped, and bind to the parameter in the webservice. 5) On an edit of the county id, mark the row being edited for deletion and add a new row with the changed values then push the changes to the web service. Note that I can get the dba to modify whatever I need to be done to solve this issue since the product isn't to market yet. Although I am leaning toward option 1, there are some things I don't like about it. For one, outside callers not going thru our ui might find this new column confusing. Also, it seems like it shouldn't be necessary to address something like this in this fashion. Option 2 doesn't appeal to me at all since the customer config change is really only one of several possible changes to the dataset and I'd really like to keep them together. Option 3 would seem to be the least invasive, but I will be bothering the data architect with this one. Once again, I don't like option 4 because outside callers will have a problem comprehending the meaning. Although option 5, might be confusing, it seems the cleanest of my proposed ideas because we could explain that to outside callers as 'you cannot edit the county id of a config record, only delete it and re-add a new one...'     - Problem with Restore (SMO) PercentCompleteNotification All, I am using SQL Server Manager Objects (SMO) Restore to restore an SQL Database. All works well however when I set the PercentCompleteNotification = 1 I would of expected the PercentCompleteEventHandler to trigger every one percent, instead it triggers a total 23 times not 100. Yet If I set PercentCompleteNotification = 10 the PercentCompleteEventHandler will trigger ten times which is expected. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks in advance.     - Simple problem: Why does this cause a massive memory leak? Hi all, I have a huge memory leak problem in what is really very simple data insert code. In my app I'm trying to use a typed dataset to insert into a database. It adds quite a few rows (say hundreds). Unfortunately it has a big ass memory leak and I dont understand why. The code below demonstrates the memory leak. It's like nothing is cleaned up after PerformOperation is called. According to .net memory profiler, after running the console app, there are huge numbers of undisposed objects and meory usage is through the roof.     - Where is the decimal point? Hello. Working on a VS2005 SP1 Windows form program in .NET 2.0, on XP Pro, SP2. I must be pretty stupid. I can't figure out how use decimal data in a table where there is no decimal point. I populated the table with data from a flat file that has a number like this "000001645000". Without the quotation marks of course. The assumed decimal point is five digits from the right. So that number shuould be 0000016.45000. How do i use this decimal in a calculation as 16.45000. I'm not looking to truncate any zeros, left or right, i just want to be able to use it as the value it should be, 16.45. Also, i'm not looking to convert it to a string as 16.45000. I know how to do that. It is stored in the datatable as 1645000. I don't see a decimal point in the table data. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.     - How do you clear a datatable? Hello. Working on a VS2005 SP1 Windows form program in .NET 2.0, on XP Pro, SP2. I have a datatable with no keys and just three columns. How do you clear a datatable to no rows ?     - dataset designer - building data access layer - how to close connect on exception I have been going through some tutorials on using the new dataset designer in Visual Studio 2005 to build dataadapters which include inserts, updates, and deletes...so I don't have to code it all by hand. This tutorial is tutorial #1 located here http://www.asp.net/learn/dataaccess/default.aspx?tabid=63. When I call my dataadapter insert statement, and my insert is invalid (e.g. wrong permissions on my database or trying to insert null value into column that requires value input), I am able to log the exception that is thrown, but my database then 'chokes' because it seems the connection did not get closed properly. The databsae thinks it still has a connection to it. Since I have not hand coded the connection, I don't know how to close it when an exception is thrown (I don't think have access to the connection object).     - SqlCeDataAdapter not running Insert Command... Hi all I am having problems getting my SqlCeDataAdapter to Update the SQL Mobile Data base. i am using C# CF2. I have tried this a number of different ways. Starting with the command builder but eventually i wrote out the entire command my self, and still nothing. The only thing that i can think this that because i am trying to add a table that is created outside the data adaptor and then Merge/Copy the data into the Adaptor so it can be saved.     - Small problem with storing connection strings Hi all, I have a data access library project within which I have created a number of datasets. In one of the datasets I've added a number of strongly typed datatable/tableadapters and configured them to use a connection string that has been stored in a settings file. The problem I'm having is that wehn I open another dataset and try and create a new table adapter (or modify an existing one) it won't let me select the connection string that I've already added to the settings file. It will add another connection string to the same settings file - but it wont let me use the one I've already added.     - Data Addaptor Not updating database?? Can some on tell me what i am missing please. Hi all The Code is below but i will give you a brief over view first. I am using C#, SQL Mobile and the CF2.0 with Merge Replication. My Primary Keys are all "uniqueidentifier" types with default value of (newsequentialid()) . Problem is I am trying to save the results for a questioner to a Results table and it does not work. I have built a windows mobile control that all seems to be working fine when the questions are completed it raises the event you see below handing out a Data Table with all the answers in it. I then open up a blank Data Table in a Data Set and merge the Data from the Answers Data Table to the Blank Data Table. This all seems to work fine, i have checked it by viewing the count, After i have Merged the count is 18 on both tables which is correct. But it is like when i call the Data Adaptor Update nothing is going into the database and there is no error. I have tried both oDA.Update(oDS.Tables["Answers"]); And oDA.Update(oDS); But still not saving. And as you can see below i have set up a command builder. My other concern is that the Primary Key is a Auto Generated "uniqueidentifier" column. With a default value of (newsequentialid()). And this column seems to be blank the whole time. Perhaps it only Generates the GUID when the Data Adaptor is updated?     - Refresh not working on TableAdapter Okay, so I've read various articles on setting up a TableAdapter to retrieve a newly generated identity column value back into the dataset after an insert. However, I'm having issues with the dataset actually getting updated. I swear this was working Monday, but once I thought it was working, I moved on to get my updates and deletes working, and now today when I ran my final tests the refresh after insert is not working :( So here is what I did: Right-clicked on the TableAdapter and chose "Add Query". I selected an "INSERT" for my new query and I left the default generated SQL for the insert as is, which came out like this (admittedly I'm typing this by memory so may not be exact, but basically I left it as is): INSERT INTO [dbo].[mytable] ([column1],[column2]) VALUES (@column1, @column2); SELECT [keycolumn], [column1], [column2] FROM [dbo].[mytable] WHERE ([keycolumn] = SCOPE_IDENTITY()) So then I name this new insert "InsertSingleRecord" (I've tried this with the InsertSingleRecord set to "NonQuery" and "Scalar"; of course, when I set it to scalar, I can retrieve the identity as a return value from InsertSingleRecord if I change the SELECT to "SELECT SCOPE_IDENTITY()" however it does me no good since at that point row.keycolumn is read-only so I can't manually update it myself with the real value. Later in my code I have something like this: mytableadapter.InsertSingleRecord( row.column1, row.column2 ); I'm leaving out some stuff for brevity, and if you think it matters let me know and I'll post it, but suffice to say, after the InsertSingleRecord call completes, if I examine row.keycolumn, I can see that it has NOT been refreshed after the insert completed (and I verified the insert was successful). This is the case immediately after the insert finishes, and even after all inserts have completed and I have called AcceptChanges(). Does the refresh not work when you use these custom inserts as opposed to just calling TableAdapter.Update(...)?     - I need an approach to storing/editing data amongs forms I'm working on a small, single user .net 2005 windows application in c# connecting to SQL Express. I'm trying to learn Typed DataSets, DataTables, DataAdapters, etc. What I need to figure out is a reasonable approach (doesn't have to be totally academic) to dealing with data. In other words, how do I store it, display it and manipulate it? Right now I have created a global DataSet with some TableTables and am Filling this structure on program startup. I'm using a freeware custom tree/list control that doesn't seem to support databinding so I'm loading it up manually from the global DataTable. So far "ok". Now I want to be able to add and remove rows and also edit rows. As an example, say I have a sub form for editing an existing row. Dragging Columns onto the form creates a BindingSource, a TableAdapter and a DataSet. I already have two of these in the global structure. Should I be removing these and trying to bind to them instead in the sub form? Or, do I want to create local copies for manipulation? But then how would I sync the results to the global objects? If I do use the global objects, how do I keep the list in sync with edits, for example? I guess I'm looking for a "pattern" on housing and connecting to data, manipulating it throughout the application. I'm hoping to start easy, rather than jumping into something complicated like MVC. I've been able to "soothe" the issue by executing SqlConnection.ClearAllPools() when we see a SqlException with a severity level of 20 or higher. However, I'd like to know if there's a setup issue with my SQL Server box that I could change that would at least lessen the frequency of these errors. If this isn't the correct forum please let me know where I should post.

I'm developing in VS2005 and have a data source based upon a parameterised
stored procedure. I click to preview my data and I'm presented with a very
nice UI that lists all my parameters however, it is the nature of these
paramters that they are mostly left empty - the stored procedures decides on
how to use them depending upon if they contain values or not.

The problem I have is that the Preview Data dialogue demands that I enter a
value for every parameter. Is there any way around this?

First things first. "Empty" is not a very good term to use in regards to the
data, I would guess that you mean either one of two things, either an empty
string or null; since it's possible that not all of your params are strings,
perhaps you mean null? If you have optional parameters in your stored
procedure then they do not require a value. Otherwise you have to either
provide a value or can set them to be null.
