    - Encrypted password stored in registry I am storing encrypted password in registry and using it then to log on my application. However, my objConn.Open(str_connecton_string) crashes the application if I use the encrypted password.     - Login Failed, catalog Information cannot be retrieved Has anybody actually ever resolved the problem described below? If so, would you please share the solution? I am trying to use MS Visual Studio to connect to an SQL Server database. When I use the Tools/Connect to Database, the DataLink Properties window pops up and I select the provider (MS OLEDB for SQL Server), then the server name and database on server. Then I check "Test Connection" and immediately get a dialog box that says "Test Connection Succeeded." I click the OK button and then I get 17 boxes, sequentially that say "Login Failed, Catalog Information cannot be retrieved." I dismiss each box by clicking "OK" and eventually the boxes all go away. I have seen this message numerous times in user groups over the last year, but I have not seen a solution that seems to have resolved the problem. I have twice reloaded the MDAC. The same file works fine when run from my server running Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Edition, so it isn't a bad database file. It also works fine in conventional ASP(VBScript) coding from the IIS on my XP Machine. I am running: - Windows XP with all the latest patches, fixes, etc.; - Visual Studio .NET, Enterprise Architect, Framework ver 1.0.3705, MDE 2002, ver 7.0.9466 - SLQ Server 2000 Desktop Engine - MDAC 2.8 (tried 2.7SP1WinXP same result) Thanks for any assistance Dick Marcum dm@herald21.com Tag: Modification of Application Block for Data Access.     - ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's curren Hi, I'm having problem with database connection in my asp.net application. It's some kind of mistery. It throws "ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is Closed. " exception some times. I'm sure that in my code everything fine and my connection is open. If I refresh the page after this error pups up, it gets back to normal. Some time ago I came accross KB article stating that this is microsoft BUG, but it's not there anymore. Does any one know what might be wrong. I'm using SQL server as database.     - formatting numbers & columns in datagrid I am still working away to get to grips with .NET web forms. Can anyone help me with these conundrums? How do I programmatically control the with of a datagrid itself and the columns in it? At the moment my grid is wider than the columns, leaving a spare bit to the right, and yet some of my columns are too narrow. Can I even get them to adjust automatically, eg to the width of the widest cell value? Also, how do I get numeric data to display correctly? The data comes from a sql query. I want it to display to 2 decimal places even if ".00", but at the moment I can't get it to give me those extra zeros whatever I do. I also had a problem figuring out how to right align the columns of figures. I fiddled with the GUI and managed this, but more by accident than design and I still don't know how I did it.     - Problem with OracleClient and Dotnet Framework 1.1 Hi folks, after upgrading from VS2002 to VS2003 I have a big problem with my database connection. I have two Oracle databases, comunication via a database link and the Data Provider for Oracle. MDB references the first database BDB references the second database. The Databases are connected via a TCP/IP Network and are running on different servers. A call like "SELECT * FROM <TABLE>@BDB" on the first server results in the error ORA-02401 Remote Client did not start a transaction! The Exception occurs when I call the ExecuteReader() Method OracleReader reader = ((OracleCommand)command).ExecuteReader(); !!! This worked perfectly with the OracleClient addon for Framework 1.0 !!! When I use the old library of System.Data.OracleClient in my software it works properly, but this can not be the solution.     - GetXML doesn't show Computed Columns Anyone know if this is the way this is supposed to be working or any potential workarounds? I have a DateTime column 'DateExpires' which I am returning as a computed column via my SELECT statement. When I call GetXML() on the DataSet, it isn't returning the computed column. However, when I do a quickwatch on the DS, I see that the column is in the dataset.     - Update Command / Data bound controls Problem Greetings All, I am currently working with VB .NET and having an issue with updating an ACCESS DB via ADO.NET.. Any help would be great. I am using the data object components. (oledbconn, dataAdapter, & Dataset).. The dataadapter fills the dataset just fine. The data is bound to several textboxes. My navigation controls work just fine as well. However whenever I make a change to a textbox field and hit update the changes are not made to the DB. Ive included a msgbox to say yeah or nah to changes. It always says false. I am using the generated UPDATE command. What am I doing wrong?     - Access is denied - SQL server Hello everyone. I installed new Win 2000 server(instead of Profi), Since then I can't connect to SQL server that is in another comuter although I used the same code and slq server is still the same. I have still exception : "System.ApplicationException: Access is denied." in SqlConnection.Open(). I use MDAC 2.8, but I also tryed 2.7 SP1 2.7 and 2.6 with the same result.     - Speed/Complexity Concern of ADO.NET Hello everyone. I'm still new to .NET, but have experience with VB6, C++ and the Java language, so I think Im catching on fast. My question is, everything I have been reading seems to indicate that ADO.NET is a lot more complicated than ADO was, and in fact, requires more programming to do the same thing. Also, looking at the descriptions of the datareader and datatable objects, seems that the datatable objects would require more memory and resources that the previoous ADO recordsets. We are getting ready to do a complete application rewrite and I am attempting to determine the best methods for the program, where to use this and that, etc. Can anyone offer their opinions or experiences with regards to working with ADO.NET?     - DataTable.Select method problem (can't understand DateDiff) I've got a DataTable object which I want to filter using it's Select method, but it doesn't recognize the DateDiff function in the filter string (which is odd considering the DataTable was populated with a query containing the DateDiff function).     - Distributed transaction problem I am using COM+ components, every client request kicks of a chain call of these components. One of the components executes a SQL query, and this fails every time for a particular client request. I am getting the following exception on execution of the query.     - Using Sum in SQL I am trying to figure out how to get the sum for each day. Hello, I need some help here, I will try to explain my situation in hope someone will can assist : 2 DataTables with Relations, 1 DataGrid on the form, 1 ListBox on the form. According the SelectedItem in the ListBox the data on DataGrid is changed (by using the Relations). The DataBindings is working perfectly ( DataGrid.DataBindings was set on the that Relation). The Problem : User add new item in the ListBox and then try to add new item to the DataGrid for the new item in the ListBox. The item will not appear in the DataGrid until I will change the item in the ListBox to other item and select again the new one. For Example : 1 DataTable for Shops, 1 DataTable for Customers, Relation between Shops.SHOP_ID to Customers.SHOP_ID. We've gotten as far as getting a dataset filled with results from an MDX query using the OLEDB provider for msolap. But when we try to bind the dataset to a grid, only the first column (rows dimension) in the result is shown. The grid is set to build columns at runtime. How come? :P Secondly, we've been experimenting with ADOMD in .net. What we wanted was to return a CellSet from a webservice - The result was an error like "CellSet doesn't support serializing".     - SP resulting in Timeout expired Hello, From a VB .net application I'm calling an SQL stored procedure and filling the results in an SQLDataReader, whose results are returned to an ASP .Net page. The procedure was running fine and all of a sudden it started giving this error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. When I run the stored procedure in Query Analyzer it takes 1 sec. I tried to monitor it in Profiler by adding the Stored Procedure Events, and I found that it is getting stuck at a statement that goes similar to the following: INSERT INTO #Tempf SELECT t.SerNo, t.Name FROM #Temp t WHERE t.Value=x #Tempf and #Temp are created explicitly at the beginning of the procedure. #Temp contains around 16,000 records. This statement is not being completed. I have no idea about what the error might be from and I would appreciate any help or idea about what might be causing this error.     - Help? Relational data... Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help? I have a need to display some data on my web page (the results of a search) for links. Here's the thing: Each link can belong to one or more category (yes, I have a many-to-many table). When the links are retrieved, I also want to retrieve the categories the link is found in. Let's say link A appears in categories X, Y, and Z, and a keyword search brings back link A - due to the way the query is structured (inner join), link A is retrieved three times due to it's presence in categories X, Y, and Z. The question is: How do I retrieve the categories (of which there may be 1 or more for each link) along with the link? Or can't I? I was thinking of multiple selects in a stored procedure (so they could be put into separate dataset tables), but that would need some correlation between the links found in the first query (i.e. the one that finds the links) and the second (the one that retrieves the categories for the links that have been found). Alternatively, I could just cache the category table, along with the LinkToCategory table and as I'm writing each entry to the page, look up the corresponding category then - if I'm using a DataRepeater, I think I can use the Item_Created event...     - Reading Excel files with Jet OLE DB Provider I have some ADO.NET code that uses the Jet OLE DB Provider to read Excel files. The reading of the files works okay. However, I get strange behavious when I have Excel running and run the program that reads the file that Excel currently has loaded. Excel will pop-up messages such as "File is now available for read-write." In other cases, if I use Excel to modify the file and save it, then run my program, I get the old data, not the most recent data.
