    - SqlCommand Parameters with SqlDbType and VarChar(MAX) If I have a field in MS SQL 2005 called "data" with type VarChar(MAX), how do I add a parameter using the syntax below if SqlDbType doesn't have a VarChar(MAX) type.     - HowTo Convert Array to Binary I have an array of an array of doubles and need to save this as a single byte array. Then save this byte array as a BLOB to an SQL 2005 database. Is it only connections that are created in the actual code block where the TransactionScope is defined, or is it all connections created on the same thread as the TransactionScope?     - best practice for data display VS 2005 designing a WinForm. I have a typical CUSTOMER, ORDERS, ORDERDETAIL database. I want to show these related items on a winform with either textboxes or datagridview controls. If I use the dataset designer to create a strongly-typed DS it will bring into memory ALL the records in each table and then select a subset according to the relations I have set when the user selects a CUSTOMER. Of course, this is completely impractical when you have any quantity of rows in any of the tables since they cannot all be brought into memory. All the examples I see use the above approach for demonstration, but this doesn't seem practical in a real world app. So how do I do this right from the beginning? Do I create queries with a param for the relation between the parent and child table and then respond to a row change event? I'm confused since I don't see any demo apps that use this senario which surely must be quite common.     - RowChanged event fires after that the current cell is changed Hi all, I've a DataGrid wich DataSource is a DataTable declared with the "WithEvents" clause, I've write some code to handle the RowChanged event. My DataGrid has a boolean column (wich not allows null value) and a TextBox column with some decimal values, I wish that when a user checks the boolean column a TextBox in the form will display the computed sum of the rows "checked". But I have noticed that the RowChanged event fires when I change a row (doh!) but only after I've changed the current cell or after the grid has lost the focus. I want that when I check or uncheck a row, the textbox displayng the computed sum suddenly changes, is there a way to accomplish this?     - dataset fill brings all records? VS 2005 pro. I have a strongly typed dataset which I generate using the designer. From the xsd file I set the relations between the CONTACTS table to the ORDERS table to the ORDERITEMS table. Then I put some DataGridViews on the form and open. In the Load event of the form the Fill methods are used in the three tables. As I step through by line, I can see the CONTACTS (1500 rows) is pretty quick and the ORDERS (55,000 rows) is slower but the ORDERITEMS (5 million + rows) churns on and on until I run out of memory. If I leave out the ORDERITEMS datagridview, the form opens and the parent-child relations are good. It seems like the Fill method is taking ALL the rows from the DB and only displaying the subset I want based on CONTACT. I would have thought that it would only "hit" the DB when it had a record in the CONTACTS table as a parent.     - More efficient way of getting this aggregate data? Hi all, Our database contains daily data going back for years, which I need aggregated into weekly averages. I came up with the code below to get it, but I don't like it - mostly because hitting the the database with a couple thousand queries feels wrong somehow. Is there a way to somehow send a "bulk query" to the DB through ado.net, and receive the response in a "bulk" package? (No need to tell me about parametrizing the query.)     - setup master-detail tables VS.NET 2005 I'm not having an intuative experience trying to get the hang of how to setup a strongly typed master/detail relationshipe between tables. I have two tables CONTACTS with PK=IDNUM and ORDERS with a field CUSTNUM. Both tables have CommandStrings like "Select <field list> from TableName..." (neither has a where clause) In the visual designer for the xsd file I have set a relationship between CONTACTS->IDNUM and ORDERS->CUSTNUM. In a Windows form I have two DataGridView controls, one for each table. When I run the program, the Orders table never follows the Contact table when it scrolls. To me, setting the data relation should have resulted in the child table filtering its results based on the parent, but obviously not.     - Gridview deletion problem I created a form, a datasource (Product table from AdventureWorks) from the Data Sources tab, and dragged the Product table from the Data Source tab to the form's designer surface. This created a dataset, bindingsource, tableadapter and bindingnavigator. I placed the following code in the click event of the delete button on the bindingnavigator: Me.Validate() Me.ProductBindingSource.EndEdit() Me.ProductTableAdapter.Update(Me.AdventureWorksDataSet.Product) When running the app, I select a row and click the delete button on the navigator. It disappears. However, when I exit the app and re-enter, the row is still there. As another test, if I select the row again, and click the delete button, and click it once more, the row is actually deleted from the database. In debug I place a stop after the Validate method above. The underlying dataset shows false for HasChanges after the first click of the delete button and the selected row shows Unchanged for its RowState. However, after the 2nd click of the delete button, the dataset shows true for HasChanges and Deleted for the RowState associated with the row. What is wrong with my code?     - UpdateRowSource.FirstReturnedRecord not working on .Net 2.0 using System.Data.OracleClient I have a project that has been upgraded from .Net 1.1 to 2.0 and I cannot get the UpdateRowSource.FirstReturnedRecord of the InsertCommand to work correctly using the OracleClient. It works correctly on 1.1 and the DataSet is updated correctly after a DataAdapter.Update, but although the insert happens to the database on 2.0, the DataSet is not updated. I'm fairly new to ado.net, using SQL Server stored procedures, asp.net, and all that entails, so I'm sure I'm missing something simple and fundamental. Hopefully you can point it out to me. Ultimately the problem is I am getting an error: "There is no Original data to access." when trying to execute the following line: if (drCur["Contact", DataRowVersion.Original].ToString() != "") this.sqldaAddSite.UpdateCommand.Parameters["@Original_Contact"].Value = drCur["Contact", DataRowVersion.Original].ToString(); You ask a lot of questions as to why I'm doing this in the first place that I'm not sure I can answer and I'm sure down the road I'll find better methods. Still... The webform that is having this problem is almost identical in logic to one that works just fine. One difference I have noticed is that when I execute these 3 lines: this.sqldaAddSite.SelectCommand.Parameters["@SiteID"].Value = (string) Session["SiteID"]; this.sqldaAddSite.Fill(this.dsAddSite1); drCur = this.dsAddSite1.scs_GetSiteUpdate.Rows[0]; The rowstate of drCur is "Added" while on the webform that works it's "Unchanged". Both are using store procedures for select commands. Can anybody give me clues as to what's going on and what to do about it?     - OleDbException.ErrorCode lookup The OleDbException.ErrorCode is supposed to be an HRESULT. What scope of errors this HRESULT maps to. I tried: catch (OleDbException ex) { string test = ex.Errors[ex.ErrorCode].Message; } However, ErrorCode is a negative int and the indexer expects an unsigned int, and HRESULTS shouldn't be negative(using the Convert namespace for ToUint32 gives me an exception on trying to convert errorcode). I am getting an error which indicate an object not found, and the named object is a table name referred to in a query. So I'm thinking that this error code applies to all cases where a table does not exist, or it might be broader and apply to other types of failures. In order to make my error message specialized for the error code, I'd like to identify what scenarios it may apply to. My hope was the Errors[errorCode].Message would give me a better idea of the scope of the ErrorCode. So what do I need to do to find out what scenarios would produce this ErrorCode. If I craft an informative error message to display to the user, right now it would read as "Table " + tablename + " does not exist in the database." but if I do this based on errorCode, then I'm afraid the errorCode may be produced in other situations where the error message is not necessarily true. So what would be a good process for manually looking up these error codes? I have the Error lookup utility from VS6 but it doesn't like the negative int values. This particular one is -2147217865 but I would really like to have a process for doing this in the future.     - Fill-Method changing DBNULL-values to other values Hi, i am writing a small interface to import some data from one database to an other database. unfortunately is the data in the source not very "nice". you have boolean-columns and those boolean-columns have as a default value DBNULL. it wouldn't be a problem if there was one boolean field, i would have a if (table.iscolumnNull()) but i have about 70 boolean fields and only ONE is true all others are false. that means i have many of those ifs already if (table.column1) { } else if (table.column2) the problem is, i don't want to have a structure like this: if (table.column1IsNull()) { if (table.column1){} } else if (table.column2IsNull()) .... I hope you can see where I am going. I do not want to put all of the pages (*.aspx files) in the root directory of my site, because that would be very disorganized. However, I am having trouble getting any projects other than the one that I place in the root directory to work. What extra steps do I need to take to place a project in a directory other than the root? I am using a webhosting service (hostway.com), so if there are any changes that need to be made on the server I need to know exactly what they are so that I can either request them for my site or make them by logging into my account. If anyone can help me with this or knows of a website that gives good instructions on doing this, I would appreciate it.     - Creating a new dataprovider I'm fairly new to ADO.NET, I've written a couple client/server applications that use the factory pattern in ADO.NET to work with MSSQL and Oracle databases. Beyond that I'm fairly green. My quest is to create a new community opensource project that consists of an ADO.NET dataprovider to communicate with Windows Installer ( .MSI ) databases. Currently you have to P/Invoke to the MSI SDK API's for opening databases, creating fiews, fecting records, accessing records and so on and so on. I'd like to create a framework class that I can share that is very ADO.NET friendly ( as much as applies to the limitd abilities of an MSI database package ). My goal is to create a framework for creating MSI applications/utilities/tools much easier to design and develop. Can anyone reccomend some good reading on how to go about this? I'm guessing that there are a bunch of interfaces to derive from and implement but I thought I'd ask for a point in the right direction instead of spending alot of time in the sand traps.     - Timeout problem with SS2K, VS03 I'm working with SS2000 on Server2003, Visual Studio 03 on XP and getting a timeout issue that I cannot identify the source of. The specific message is "General error getting subscriptions" (or other table) "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached." There's quite a bit of code so rather than try to post the whole lot I'm going to try to describe it, basically when this happens there's multiple classes and forms running (basically it's a form editing a related entity from a main form, each with multiple classes). After editing data in the subclass, the code saves to the database within a transaction, the transaction is committed and the connection is closed cleanly and all appears to be well. Occasionally, however, after editing and saving from the subform I get the above message and once that happens, I cannot seem to connect to the database until I close that copy of the application. What I've tried to figure out so far; initially I believed the error message that the pool max size was reached. This does not appear to be true; the timeout only effects this instance of the application, I can connect with other applications or other instances of the same application with no problem. So unless the pool is something within the scope of the application, the message is incorrect. When I look at sp_who2 for blocking, none shows. When I trace my calls to the server with sql profiler, the queries never reach the server, which (I believe) indicates that it's a problem with the application rather than a server setting. It's almost as if the connection string stops working but we get that from app.config so I don't see how it could change from one call to the next. Similarly, waiting a few minutes and trying the same search again from the application makes no difference. Because the 'timeout' appears indefinite, rather than just a long running query, I don't believe tweaking timout settings will help. The queries take at most a few seconds when it's working, yet once I hit the exception not even the shortest query will run. I tried to reduce the number of connections used, and initially that seemed to help, but not eliminate the error. But the number I'm dealing with is ridiculously small, I pass the connection by reference to the subclasses so I went from using 3 total to using only 2. Searching the web I found that if I have SQL Debugging enabled that would cause the error, sure enough in this project I did have it enabled so I disabled it and thought that I had fixed the problem. But after a day or so the problem cropped up again, and SQL Debugging is still disabled. So everywhere I turn appears to be a blind alley; it's does not appear to be the connection pool, it's definitely not a long running query and it's not a connection or connections being left open that I can see. SQL Debugging is not enabled and I'm running out of places to look for the source of this problem. Has anyone else seen this type of timeout error?     - Webmethod to save data to SQLServer I have a Webservice written in C# that provides data to both a web browser through ASP.net and to a VC++ client. I have been able to retrieve data from SQLServer and passing to my C++ client as XML without a problem using the SqlDataAdaptor and the DataSet. I am a bit confused how to save data to SQL Server from my client. I figured if I could create a DataSet, I could save it to the database. I wrote a WebMethod that takes a string (the XML) as input, reads that string using an XMLReader, then creates a DataSet from that reader.     - TableAdapter.Update not working but no exception thrown Hi I can't figure this one out. I'm using TableAdapters quite successfully with the rest of my app but I have one where the insert just doesn't work when the TableAdapter.Update(TypedDataTable) is called. When I set the break point on the method I can see that it initializes the adapter in the DataSet.Designer.cs file. Can someone suggest how I can work out what's going wrong? I've recreated the table adapter in the xsd wizard page but it's always the same. No exception is thrown but the update method is definitely called and the insert stored procedure works too. BETWEEN fromDate And to", con); resAdapter.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add("?", OleDbType.Date); resCmdBuilder = new OleDbCommandBuilder(resAdapter); myDataSet = new DataSet(); } So , now i have a unbound datagridview i need to fill , i have a fill() function in this same class which takes a dgv [Fill(DataGridView theDgv) ] and fills it based on myDataSet. The adapter loads like this : resAdapter.SelectCommand.Parameters[0].Value = theDay; Now: 1. The datatset has customers based on the top SQl statement , how do i load into it customers based on other values , or just ALL customers??! ("SELECT * FROM customers)?? load resAdapter again!?? 2. How do i MAKE a NEW table in an access database???(i know how to add and delete columns in a table) 3.     - Programmatically modifying the controls in FormView's PagerTemplate I am trying to create a FormView controls in which I access and modify the the controls in the PagerTemplate programmatically. However, I continue to recieve the following error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.     - Validating an XML file Hi there, I've created a strongly-typed "DataSet" using VS. If I save the data via "DataSet.WriteXml()" and later prompt my users for the name of the file in order to read it back in again (using "DataSet.ReadXml()"), how do I validate that the file they enter is valid. That is, while "DataSet.ReadXml()" throws a "System.Xml.XmlException" if they enter a non-XML file, a valid XML file results in no exception even though the schema may be completely incorrect (if they enter some random XML file on the system that is).
