    - DataRow.Select Weirdness! Dim DR() As DataRow DR = DIAL.Select(whereClause) Sometimes DR.Length returns > 1... BUT, the dataset is GUARANTEED to have only 1 reference number that matches (I checked the database). So my question is - how come DataTable.Select returns more than one row... when in case there should be only one matching row?     - DataAdapter.Update method woes We have been experimenting for quite a while now on the best approach to take for updating data. The approach we are currently investigating is using the DataAdapter class' Update method. However, we have run into an issue regarding this approach and we can't seem to find a suitable workaround. Allow me to setup a basic scenario to use as an example: In this application, we are submitting all database updates in batches. When the user submits data base updates, we want either all updates to occur or no updates to occur. Anytime an error occurs while updating, all changes are to be roll backed on the back end database (which is SQL Server), the row in error is to be resolved in some fashion, and all pending updates remain pending so once the error is resolved the user can re-submit. Of course one of the issues with this scenario is "rolling back" any modifications made to the DataSet during the Update call. If row 10 has a RowState of Added and the error occurs on row 20, then after the roll back of the back end db row 10 will still need to retain that RowVersion of Added. In other words, AcceptChanges only needs to be called when all database activity has been successfully executed, and not on a row-by-row basis. We found the solution to that problem. In the DataAdapter's RowUpdatedEvent, set e.Status = UpdateStatus.SkipCurrentRow. We have a table, tblAddressType, on SQL Server. We have four associated stored procedures for selection, insertions, updates, and deletions. The stored procedure for insertion has two output parameters: @intAddressTypeID which returns the ID of the newly added row (by returning @@IDENTITY) and @datInsertedDateTime which returns the date/time of the row insertion (by returning GetDate() ). The DataSet contains one table, tblAddressType. The DataAdapter maps the two output parameters of the insert stored procedure to the appropriate columns in the DataTable. When a row is added to the DataTable and the DataAdapter Update method is called, everything works as expected. The new ID and the Inserted Date Time are returned from the stored procedure and are populated in the appropriate columns by the column mappings. Great and dandy. What is the problem you ask? Lets say we have 5 inserts. Inserts 1 through 4 are successful. Insert 5 fails for some reason. Ok, the Catch block rolls back the transaction so inserts 1 through 4 are no longer in the backend. Since we did not call AcceptChanges on the DataSet, and we prevented a row-by-row AcceptChanges in the RowUpdated Event by setting e.Status = UpdateStatus.SkipCurrentRow, then inserts 1 through 4 are still pending insertions. Right? Wrong!!! The RowState of those rows are now Modified. When those stored procedure output parameters are mapped to the appropriate columns, apparently the RowState changes from Added to Modified. Not good since those rows do not exist in the back end due to the transaction being rolled back. Has anyone run into this and know a good workaround?     - Exclusive lock in SELECT Hi. When I execute a SELECT using the Fill method of SqlDataAdapter class, there is a exclusive lock on all the tables that apperas in the SELECT clause. When we Add records to the table the first two records work just fine, but adding a the third record results ArgumentOutOfRangeException "Index" is thrown. It is also thrown when attempting to add a record beyond the third. But, if one catches the exception and retries the Add it succeeds, most of the time.     - Pros and Cons I am looking for some pros and cons between developing a custom DAL wrapper that would allow the developer to send the Stored Procedure name and some parameters and just writing a DAL that is application specific such as having a Products class and then using data adapters and such to return application specific data. Currently I am using the first solution but I find that sometimes there are things that would work better if I used the application specific DAL such as having an array of items that need to be added to the database as a single record for each item in the array but need to have the current records removed before the new ones are added. This class inherits from System.Data.Common.DbDataAdapter and implements the following interfaces: IDbDataAdapter and ICloneable. How to write the values of the initialization in the code- behind file of the page where I add the component? 2.     - DataView not writing changes to DataSet???? Greetings, I have a textbox control with has a binding to a DataView (which always has only one row). Changes to the row are persisted during the lifetime of the DataSet/DataTable which underlies the DataView. However when I use MyDataAdaptor.update() the change is ignored. When I programmatically inspect data in the row, I see the new value, but when I look ats it rowstate this is set to "unchanged". Further info: if I use editbegin() and editend() the rowstate is changed to modified. Update then catches the change and updates the database. The DataView is being used to filter to a single record to supply a form (sorting on an index value of another control). So the filter is being changed frequently before Update is called. However the changes persist when rows are revisited. I have another textbox control on the same form, using a different dataview - changes to it are caught and passed on to the update. I see no differences in the properties of the controls or the dataveiws. I don't think this matters but the data type of the column in the database is int, while the textbox is string. Any ideas?     - Using Strongly Typed Datasets Environment: VS.NET 2003; VB, Access 2003 database. The application allows users to specify the path/filename and the table name at runtime. I am trying to figure out how I can use a strongly typed dataset in this environment. If I add an OleDBDataAdapter to my project and then create a dataset from that the table name is embedded in the generated code. I believe that changing the file/path is accomplished by making the connection string use a variable that contains the user's path/filename but I am not sure how to handle the fact that the table name changes at runtime.     - Passing Null Values via a SQLCommand.Parameter I use stored procedures in most of my programs and in many instances one or more of the parameters being passed can be null. I am looking for the most efficent way to test for a null value then pass it to the parameter object.     - Extending Typed DataTables I am facing the following problem in my applications and would like suggestions from you guys. My database schema has changed many times over the years and keeps chaging frequently according to specific client needs. My business layer (webservices) returns datasets to the thick client. The problem is that as the database changes so often, more than 800 datasets will have to be changed everytime. The solution suggested was as follows: a) Create 1 DataTable for each TABLE in the database. b) Create own DataSet for each visible screen or processing function by addind DataTables to this DataSet. c) Add Ref Contraints manually to this custom DataSet. This way, if the database changes, only one single DataTable class (schema) in the application will have to be changed. Now my problem is that i want to use Typed Datasets and Typed DataTables. What would be the best solution for this scenario. As mentioned on MSDN, DataTables can be instantiated independent of DataSets. In this case, the schema for the DataTable and the constraints are added manually in the code. But I could not find anything about extending Typed DataTables and using them independent of the DataSet. There is a powertoy by Shawn Wildermuth that helps you extend Typed DataSets, but i couldn't extrapolate his ideas to fit my requirements. Any ideas what the best thing for me would be ?     - OleDbDataCommand problem I'm know the "old" implementation of ADO very well, and I am now trying to get used to ADO.NET. I've always preferred creating connection, commands and recordsets programmaticaly since every application I've built that needs data access allows for modifiable connection settings. This leads me to my question: When I create a OleDbConnection, OleDbCommand and OleDbDataReader to retrieve data from an Access database, everything works the way it should until I set the CommandText for the OleDbCommand object. It seems that if I try to order the results using the ORDER BY command an OleDbException is thrown with the following description: Unspecified error: E_FAIL(0x80004005) However, if I do not use and ORDER BY command, the exception is not thrown. I have several COM+ objects (amongst others): BO.Dispatch, DAL.BaseDAL, Config, BF.Inventory, and DAL.Inventory Each object (except DAL.BaseDAL and Config) implements the IGateway interface (my creation; contains a single function, Gateway(String, String) As Object). Every object is registered in COM+ and the GAC. In this case, every object is in COM+ in a separate COM+ application, all as Server Applications running as the Interactive User. And I have the following sequence of events: TestApp.exe runs TestApp.exe calls a method on BO.Dispatch BO.Dispatch calls DAL.BaseDAL DAL.BaseDAL calls Config Config returns a connection string stored in the registry DAL.BaseDAL uses connection string to get a DataSet BO.Dispatch examines values in DataSet BO.Dispatch calls BF.Inventory BF.Inventory calls DAL.Inventory DAL.Inventory calls DAL.BaseDAL... What *should* happen is the DAL.BaseDAL calls Config for the connection string and gets another DataSet. However, I'm getting an error that DAL.Inventory can't create a DAL.BaseDAL object because it can't find it (full error is below). How can this be? It obviously *can* be found, since BO.Dispatch uses it just fine. All objects are compiled with references to the bin\[objectname].dll file they depend on, and the dependencies are set up so that, when I compile all the objects, DAL.BaseDAL is one of the first things to get compiled (after IGateway and Config).     - problem with displaying new row Hello, My problem must be very simple to solve, but I havennt found the answer yet, so any help is appreciated. I have a form with bound controls, mostly textboxes, to an access database. When I fill the dataset the datatable which is used in the binding correctly populates the controls on the form. All navigation buttons work perfectly. The edit and delete button do their work without a problem. After a delete the label which displays current and total records by counting the rows in the table is decreased by one as it should. My only problem is after I add a new row. The row is added, but I can not navigate to it. The counter adds 1 record, so I know the add was successfull, but when I want to go to the last record it just doesnt do it. It stops at record 14/15. I use the me.databidings(dt).position = dt.rows.count - 1 to jump to the last record, which normally works, bt doesnt after I added a record. Finally, when I stop the application and restart the record the new record is added to the database and I can use it like any other record.     - Weird Timeout Expired error Hello all, Here is current snapshot of our environment: ASP.NET (C#) .Net Framework 1.0 SP2 MDAC 2.71 (SP1) Windows 2000 (Build 2195 SP3) SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (SP3) We are using Microsoft SqlHelper from the Application Blocks and we currently have connection pooling = no Every now and then we get two types of errors: First Error: "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: General network error. Check your network documentation." This error tends to go away if we refresh the browser. Second Error: "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." What is interesting about this error is that the procedure being called takes 1 parameter (a state UID) and returns within 3 seconds. I was getting an exception immediately (no 3 second delay) if I passed a state returning couple of hundred records consisting of VARCHAR and INT values, but works fine if there are fewer or no return values. Once I executed that same procedure using Query Analyzer for the problem state, the application started to work fine. It is happening on various procedure calls every few hours.     - Why is this login failing? I am using VS in conjunction with SQL Server 2000. I am trying to create a new SQLConnection but am getting an error message of "Login failed. Not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection" I drag a SQLConnection to my components tray. In the Connection String property I say New connection. I give the server name (which is the name of my computer) and put the radio on specific name and password. I enter a user name of sa and a password of xxx. I click on the field "Select the database on the server" and get the above mentioned error, followed by "Login failed, Catalog info can not be retrieved". In the past I have solved this problem by going into SQL Server and in the Server, Properties, Security tab changing the authenication to SQL Server and Windows. My notes indicate that in the past when I've had this problem it was because the authentication was not set to mixed. However this does not seem to fix the problem in this case.
