    - OleDbDataAdapter.Update or OleDbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery ? Hi all, I've been wondering which one of these to use in my application, in terms of efficiency: the Update method of the DataAdapter or the ExecuteNonQuery method of the Command? Using OleDbDataAdapter.Update() is so much easier than creating a command object with all the parameters, as it just involves calling the method and passing it a DataTable object. (Some great design and elegancy from the side of the .NET architects ;) ). I'm trying to keep my application as connected as possible, so that when I update/insert/delete a row, the data source would be immediately updated accordingly.     - ASP.NET/MS SQL2K Connectivity Problem Database: MS SQL 2K on a sub-domain, uses Named Pipes and TCP/IP and it's in Mixed Mode. Local PC: Win2K Pro Dev Server: Win2K Server From my local PC I can connect to this database with no problem through EM and QA, but when I try to use the same SQL login to connect through an ASPX page it fails. I get "SQL Server Does Not Exist or Access Denied". However, if I turn on impersonation I can connect to this database through my ASPX page. From my development server impersonation doesn't work. I get "Login failed for user 'username'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection." Anyone have a clue as to why I can connect to the SQL DB through EM and QA with no problem, but through my ASPX page it fails. Also, why would turning impersonation on make things work. One moe thing, the original page was written in classic ASP. This page works fine on my PC , but if I move it to another PC or server it fails. I dunno if that helps. Thanks in advance.     - Working with a remote server Hi there, I wonder if someone would be kind enough to describe to me the basic procedure for working with ADO.NET, Visual Studio.NET 2003 and an Access 2000 database to and from my ISP's server? I'd really appreciate some help, as I've been trying to work through this for days now, and I can't seem to find a help file that talks me through my specific situation...(I'm using Win 2000, BTW) I've created a simple web project at http://localhost/WebApplication1. I've dragged the appropriate 'Data' icons onto a webform to create an OleDbDataAdapter and an OleDbConnection to a database that's in this directory. I've generated a new dataset, filled it and bound it to the load event for the form. When I preview the aspx form in a browser I see the dataset and all is fine. So far so good. My problem comes with moving the project to my ISP's server. I'm reasonably confident that all is set up properly with .NET1.1 at their end. How do I transfer my project to the server? I've tried simply FTPing the project to the ISP's folder, but references to my local machine's C:/Inetpub/wwwroot folder are not updated. I've also tried using Visual Studio's Project-Copy Project, but with similar results. I think I need to somehow map my C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/WebApplication folder to my server's http://myCompany.com/WebApplication folder, so that the links are updated. However, I can't Map Network Drive because the ISP's server drive isn't part of my physical LAN - the Map Network drive won't accept a http:// prefix?. The ISP folks said I needed a DNS(?) for my database, but I don't know how to use it. It's of the form: \\NAS1\Home\A\AHI647\data\myDatabase.mdb. I presume that my web project is in a folder on the ISP's server called \\NAS1\Home\A\AHI647\www\WebApplication2\ One thing I've tried is to create the project on the remote server itself, connecting via the Frontpage server extensions. While I can connect and see the files online (or at least in the VSWebCache subdirectory on my local machine), the connection the database, while appearing to be on the ISP's directory is actually linking to a temp file on my local drive. My gut tells me this isn't the way to approach things...? As you can see, I'm getting in a bit of a pickle here. Please help!! Many thanks for any response.     - Integrate with database on webserver I've got a database on a remote webserver hosted by my ISP that collects data from a website. I only have FTP access to the webserver. What is the best way to get the data from this DB into an existing database inside my internal LAN? I suppose I could FTP a copy of the webserver DB, but I am wondering if there is a better way.     - DataView.Sort loses ASC/DESC value I use a DataView object as the datasource for an ASP.NET DataGrid. I am seting the DataView.Sort member with a column name and a direction, eg: dvEmp.Sort = "emp_name DESC"; This works fine, but when I post back to the page and look at the dvEmp.Sort value, it only contains "emp_name", and appears to have discarded the " DESC" specifier.     - DataSet and updating Ok. I have a table with a primary key being an integer. When using VS.NET 2002, it could not create an update command for my table. Being SQL savvy, I created my own update statement below Me.SqlCommand4.CommandText = "UPDATE dbo.links_page SET (title=@title, imageurl=@imageurl) WHERE (link_page_id = @link_page_id); SELECT title, link_page_id, imageurl FROM dbo.links_page It is bound to the SqlDataAdapter I created. When I add a new record, it is getting the proper auto-increment values, and when I execute .Update(myDataSet), the record is added to the database table But after that record is added, it gives me a constraint error. Apparently, it is having a problem with records that are already in the table. It looks like it is attempting to insert copies of them into the table (which violates my primary key.     - size problem with ole object data type (blob) and ado.net Hi there, I've a strange problem with ado.net and an Access db. I need to create a little C# app that take the content of "ole object" field and then save it into a file. The problem is that when I do the following Byte[] byteBLOBData = new Byte[0]; byteBLOBData = (Byte[])(ds.Tables["tblRefAlbum"].Rows[0]["photo"]); I get the exact double of the original size! and if I save this array byte to a file I'll get my file with every two byte set to 00. The result is, of course, not an image. I've tryed to manipulate my array of byte to strip every two bytes but the result is an visible image but not the correct image (it's a scrambled image that appears).     - using DataSet to transport data as XML Hi, I have two exacts databases, but phisically distant and without direct connection. I want data be transported from one place to another. The process that i'm doing to achieve that is loading a DataSet from source database, writting schema to an XSD file, writting data to an XML file sending them by any mean (email as first attempt) and in the other point, receiving the XMLs, loading DataSet and update to a destination database. I have done almost everything , but i have troubles with the last part of the process. How i can say that the changes in the DataSet must be updated in the destination database?     - SQLException timeout I am using the .NET SQLData Provider for accessing data from an SQL Server 2000 SP3 Server I have an SQLDataAdapter that it is being provided an appropriate constructed SQLCommand object. The Command's object Timeout Property has been set to 0 i.e. "do not timeout". However, when I am using the SQLDataAdpter Fill method with a DataSet as parameter A and a TableName (string) as parameter B in some cases I get an SQLException with the error code -2 (i.e. timeout). This is not a reproducible behaviour. It usually happens in our customers sites. Just to help you, it cannot be a problem of locks and SQL Server's overload because we run the process that fills in the dataset when nobody else is connected to the SQL server thus it cannot be neither a concurrency problem (locks) nor sql server's overload because there only one user in the server logged in Could you please help me on this. In order to overcome the problem I put a loop of 30 retries to fill the dataset prior to letting the exception be thrown to the caller stack and even with this patch I still have cases that the fill fails to execute with a time-out error What can I do to solve the problem? Is there another property that I can set in the SQL ADO.NET Objects (I had also set the connection timeout to 0) HINTS 1. When the SQLException with the -2 error is thrown the Fill command did not wait a little bit (not even 60 secs). It looks like the error has been immediately sent from the server. 2. The query that I am using in the SQLCommand object is a liitle bit complex (it has aggregate functions, scalar columns and complex WHERE condition that uses xxx IN (SELECT YYY ...). Might be the case that the time out comes from the SQL Preprocessor 3. I put an index in a sensitive column and the exception vanished !! 4. However, this cannot be the solution.     - Nulls from msaccess to Vb.Net I've written the following and found that the ISNULL function is not working properly. I want to be able to query the Firstname record from an access database and have it return a string of my preference when the Firstname field is null. I found that this is isn't happening. Under transact-sql ISNULL is to have a replacement parameter and find that I receive a wrong parameters error message with my code. I've tried using the nz command for msAccess and I receive a function not found error. Is there a way to return a string for a null value from vb.net querying an access database?.     - can't find a downed server even when it comes back up. Pooling problem? I have a program that looks for remote SQL Servers and pulls information off of them every x minutes. It's possible that the DSL connection to one of the servers can be down for an extended period of time. If that happens, I have good exception handling and logging so that it doesn't try to pull data off of that server. I'm experiencing a problem when a server is down for some period of time, but then comes back up. The problem is that the application immediately fails after trying to open the connection, like it doesn't even try to open it. If I stop and restart my program (it's a .NET program running as a Windows service), then it detects that the server is back up and starts working. One other note - if I change a config file so that the server name is the IP address of the server, OR from IP address back to server name, then the program detects that the server is back up and starts pulling data again. (meaning - I change connection string to something else and the program detects the server is back up). Could this be some sort of connection pooling issue?     - Problems instantiating a DataSet from XML schema In a standard Windows project, I created a couple of xml schema and used the generate data set tool under the schema menu. I could then view the schema as data sets and they look right - so far so good. However, when I try to instantiate them by dragging a data set onto a form, as described in the help files, I have problems. The IDE correctly lists the xml schema under typed datasets, but when I hit OK I get told that VS can't instantiate the data sets. Underneath it says to build the solution, fix any errors and try again. I build - get no errors or warnings - but when I go through the process again I get the same error message. What am I missing?     - DataSet.Merge - Expressions not recalculated - Known Bug? When merging a DataSet, if the the DataSet being merged into contains an expression column and the DataSet merging does not, then the expression column is not evaluated for new rows (they are DBNull). Of course, I strip the expression column before updating because of the other bug that causes DataAdapter Update to blow up if an Expression column is present, so this causes the aforementioned bug to occur.     - Distributed transaction completed errors I am encountering SQLClient errors in a COM+ object (spawned from Biztalk) that extracts data from an xml document and updates a SQL table (version 2000 8.00.760 SP3) Under a fairly low load of documents, there seems to be no problems, but with several messages to process, these errors start to stack up. I use floats in SQL server as they are its standard datatype for dealing with non-integral numbers I thus thought it would be logical to use the SqlDbType.Float for accessing parameters of this type in ADO.NET, from C# However, when I declare an SqlParameter with SqlDbType.Float as its datatype, its Value property after the command has executed can't be cast to a float, only a double.     - C# oracle connectivity Consider a situation that i need to connect to a remote oracle database using a ASP.NET interface. I dont have the access to change the TNSname.ora file. In that case, how can i connect to oracle using the following information: 1. Network Address 2. Port 3. SID 4. User Id 5 Password Java does allow this. But the .NET connection string using both ORAClient or Microsoft's Oracle native driver, doesnt allow me to do that.     - How to determine that rows on server changed and dataset needs to be updated ? Hi, I'm starting using ADO.NET and trying to understand if there is any analog of Server side cursor in ADO.NET. Using ADO i could just open recordset with serverside cursor and adOpenDynamic options. Then if another user has changed values on the server while recordet is opened, i got updated records automatically. In ADO.NET i couldn't find the way to implement this future.     - Updating datagrid display using custom collection I'm having problems refreshing a DataGrid that a custom business object collection (PeopleCollection) is binded to. The PeopleCollection class maintains a collection of PersonInfo items. The PeopleCollection class inherits from CollectionBase and implements IBindingList. The PersonInfo class implements IEditableObject and IDataErrorInfo. What I have so far, is when a user double clicks a row on the DataGrid a 'Person Details' form is displayed showing the details of the person selected. The details of the person may be changed via textboxes on the form. This works well. Problem is if the user changes, say, the name of the person on the form and clicks the OK button the Person Details form is closed, but the new name is not displayed in the DataGrid (it still displays the old data). I know the new name is propagated to the PersonInfo object cause if I click on the row that was changed by the form the DataGrid decides to refresh itself, therefore displaying the new name. So, how do I update the DataGrid when the PersonInfo object is updated? I know the PersonInfo object should be notifying the PeopleCollection object, which should then raise the ListChanged event. The DataGrid updates nice and well on addition and removal of people from the the collection. Problem is only with modification of person objects.     - very rookie VBScript ADO RDS Binding question Looking at what is posted here, I'm afraid this will be a real dumb thing to ask (I'm just getting into web programming after having worked in mainframe programming for a long time). I'm learning about ADO RDS Binding. My (simple) web page finally has been made to successfully retrieve a little data from my sample database (which has a "songs" table and a "users" table - joinable on a field called "username"). I'm now trying to persist the extracted recordset (eventually in XML and in a "stream") and to make a user fiendish (oops - I meant "friendly") "table" with sortable column headers and all that... To help me learn about the topic, I found a very interesting MSDN article that had a great looking VBScript at the bottom. The idea of the script is to present form input fields via the page and you can override defaulted connection info and have the script draw you a simple "table" from one of your database tables... Well - I can't get the VBScript to work... I get the form inputs to show up just fine but when I click the "run" button, nothing seems to really happen (and I sure don't get my MS Access info displayed in a "table" on the screen like is supposed to happen). So, my question is "can someone coach me as to how to get the script really to work?" I can share where to find version of the script if that would help.     - Web Services and SQL Server Stored Procedures I've written a very basic web service that is used by my PocketPC to add two numbers together. It works fine. So next I'm writing a WebService which accesses my SQL Server and returns rows appertaining to a specific OrderId. I have written a stored procedure called spGetConfirmedOrder to which I pass the OrderId and it works okay until I need to reference it in my code then it doesn't recognise it.     - batch query ?! I just watch an overview of ADO.NET 2 on MSDN TV. In that demo the SqlDataAdapter featured a batch mode where you cold submit update of many line with one query. (instead of the line by line update as now) I thought it was a great feature. Now in my own PocketPC database application (www.ihookdb.com :) I have my own "data access layer" and I thought it would be nice to use batch update too. (and because it's my code I could do it today :) And there a few question came to my mind (on about how to do that) 1. I was thinking, oh well man, it's simple, just queue the query with ';' in the middle. but there is a problem if I write UPDATE MyTable (field1, field2) VALUES (@field1_1, @field2_1) WHERE ID=@field3_1; UPDATE MyTable (field1, field2) VALUES (@field1_2, @field2_2) WHERE ID=@field3_2;..... N times (where N is my batch size) (notice I write @field_1 for 1st query, @field1_2 for the second, etc ...) but what if I use a batch size of 100 and they submit only 3 line changes ? should I create the query depending on the number of changes ? how to do that cleanly ? 2. but there is worst ! lest say I do an INSERT with an ID Identity column, I should have a SELECT @@IDENTITY after my insert. but what happened if I do many insert at a time ?!.... I have come to the realisation that a lot of my problems could be
easily solved by storing data in "multidimensional" tables in
databases. Instead of the traditional 2-D "Table", using a 3-D "Cube"
would greatly simplify a lot of the pivoting/cross tabular/slicing and
dicing querying my applications are required to perform.

Doing some *preliminary* research, it seems the solution is "OLAP".

- I have MSDE, (MS OLAP is not included), does anyone know of any FREE
databases with some OLAP capabilites? (MSDE, SQLite, Firebird, etc.)

- I have searched sourceforge.net and found "Mondrian". I am going to
try this opensource software and see what I can do with it. Anyone
have any thoughts/experience using Mondrian ??

- Mondrian is Java... are there any .NET efforts currently underway
complete with ADO.NET Providers?

- any recommended links for newbies to OLAP?

Hi Cip,

I would go searching for words as Blob and Bytearray, I have seen only that
Olap did give trouble with databases in this newsgroup.

I thought it was more office '97 however I am not sure of that.
