    - Filling a DataSet from a sql query against a XML schema Hi I'd like to know if it's possible, with an OleDbProvider, to fill a dataset from a sql squery against a XML schema. For exemple, i have this OleDbCommand : SELECT computer.name, processor.frequency, soundCard.model FROM computer INNER JOIN processor ON computer.processor_id = processor.id LEFT OUTER JOIN soundCard ON computer.soundCard_id = SoundCard.id After I use an OleDbDataAdapter to fill a dataset whose name is "computers". And I want to have to get the Xml data of this dataset. The result i want (by getting Xml) is <computers> <computer> <name>My Computer</name> <processor> <frequency>3Hz</frequency> </processor> <soundCard> <model>16 Bits sound card</model> </soundCard> </computer> </computers> But I have : <computers> <computer> <name>My Computer</name> <frequency>3Hz</frequency> <model>16 Bits sound card</model> </computer> </computers> I tried to load a schema into the dataset with ReadXml method but it seems that it doesn't work after the oleDbDataAdapter Fill method. I tried Microsoft SQLXML but it's still incomplete and very slow. So If someone knows if the thing i want to do is possible, please answer.     - Two DataGrids on One Form? Could be simple solution, but I can't findcontrol !!! I have the something like the following data structure: Users users_ID, orgs_ID, users_email, users_password, etc. Orgs orgs_ID, orgs_name, orgs_description, etc. I have a single form with two datagrids. I have loaded one dataset with two tables. There is only a single record at any time in each of the tables in the bound dataset. I bind the first datagrid to one datatable, and the second datagrid to another datatable. Both datagrids seem to populate just fine in edit mode, but... My UPDATE routine is fired on the update command of the first user_profile datagrid. SO THE PROBLEM IS: I can't findcontrol for the org_id in the second datagrid. The key issue here is the need to easily enable additional records to be added to the second datagrid, to enable the registration of different orgs. Anyone know about using multiple datagrids (not necessarily nested) on the same page? Just to prove I have NO idea what I'm doing, here's some of my code my code (simplified)...     - Trouble clearing SqlParameters from my Command object (note - sorry for the crosspost - I sent to .vb thinking i was sending to .adonet). I implemented a very small, basic data access layer for my web application. It works just fine, except for this one bug. One of my methods returns an abstracted dataset. To accomodate X number of input parameters, I created a function signature that accepts a ParamArray of SqlParameters as well as the name of the stored proc. In the body of the function I loop through the param array and append each object to the Parameters collection of my Command object. The problem comes up when I try to append a SqlParameter object that I have already used in a previous call, that is also an argument for the next stored procedure. For example, I have: dim objParam1 as New SqlParameter("@userid", intUserid) dim objDS as DataSet objDS = objDAL.GetDataSet("storedprocname", objParam1) ' do some stuff with the dataset, now try a new query, different proc, same parameter objDS.clear() objDS = objDAL.GetDataSet("anotherprocname", objParam1) The error returned is something like "There is already a parameter named objParam1 in the SqlParametersCollcetion. Prior to adding each parameter, I check its count and, if greater than 0, remove each item before appending the new params.     - Shouldn't An Exception Be Thrown - Establishing a Primary Key Hello, I was setting the primary key on a table which was a collection of 3 columns. I mispelled the name of the second column when I built the array of collumns when I created the array of collumns for the primary key. When I used the "dt.primarykey(myArrayOfKeys)" no exception was thrown, and rather then the primary key being a set of 3 columns, it was only a single column. When you make this type of mistake when setting foreign keys, that process throws and exception.     - CommandTimeout property Clarification I have a stored proc that runs and calls others and sometimes the process runs for 3 to 5 minutes depending on traffic. If it is the second case will sql actually stop in the middle of processing? Currently I am getting Application Unavailable in the browser after the Machine.config setting responseDeadlockInterval has been exceeded. I will set this higher. But I am wondering if sql is still processing and the web server times out, will sql continue processing until it is done? I have tested and it seems like it does. It seems like it will also stick with the command until it is done no mater how long it takes. I have not set the CommandTimeout. I am trying to figure out how to make sure sql doesn't stop. Thanks!     - Connection Pools I have an app that I have recently been testing to try an determine the cause of this Timeout Expired issue. I am using the performance monitor to check the # of connection pools as well as the # number of pooled connections. When I start the app and the user logs in a pool & connection is created and all is well. However when I shut down the app the pool does not go away. Then if I start the app again another pool and connection are created and soon, and so on?? Does anyone have any idea how I should deal with this? Should the pool created by the app be detroyed when the app is no longer in memory. By the way I am using CLR .Net Data for the specific app, not _global.     - DataTable schema changes I need to handle dynamic changes to a table's schema, even when there is already data present. It appears that the only thing supported by DataTable is to remove a column so I am pulling all the data out into a 2D array, performing my manipulations on the raw data, and then clearing out the table's Rows and Columns collections and attempting to recreate them. Basically, Rows.Clear(); Columns.Clear(); RebuildColumns(/*...*/); RebuildRows(/*...*/); Where I rebuild the columns from a separate list of schema parameters that I have available and then rebuild the rows from the 2D array of raw data that I originally pulled from the table. For a simple test I am trying to remove the third column from a four column table (something that I suppose I could have done simply via Columns.RemoveAt, but am trying this way as a test). The problem is that when I'm adding the rows back, I'm getting an exception thrown on adding the second row: System.IndexOutOfRangeException "Cannot find Column 3" System.Data.DataTable.InsertRow Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Does anybody know why when connecting to an Oracle database from a ASP.NET web app running under Windows XP, the connection is very slow. It takes about 2 minutes to open the database connection. The same code running on a NT2000 machine executes in under 4 seconds. To test this, is very simple On an XP machine, create a new ASP.NET app and create a new OleDbConnection object. Assign a valid connection string and execute the Open statement. That is it.     - The same table (types) cannot be the child table in two nested relations. I have a Schema describing an XML feed i'm receiving. The problem is, when i load it i get the above error. In this schema i have several fields describing an article. Two of these fields(tables) are called videos and sounds. They both contain a complex type (table) called Types which contain from 0-unbound number of "type" elements. So the case is. Both the sounds and the videos nodes have types/type nodes, which won't map to my DataSet. I don't think i can get the xml provider to change the format, but is there any way i can add something to the schema to allow the "same table" twice?     - Updating a DataTable as opposed to a DataSet Hi, I have loaded up some data into a DataTable as opposed to a Dataset. The DataAdapter allows this. I don't need all the associated stuff with the DataSet and this is why I have chosen the DataTable. However I'd like to update the changes to the DataTable to the database it was loaded from. The DataAdapter can update a dataset but not a datatable. How can I do this then without having to resort to a manual procedure. Does the version of the .NET framework I'm running make a difference. Now, the data loads into the datagrid and the text box just fine. When I move around in the datagrid, it changes the value in the text box. Now, how do I change the current record using code? I've tried using the: me.bindingcontext(dsCustomer, "dtCustomer").position Modifing this values does not modify the control on the screen and changing the record position on the screen does not change the bindingcontext.position value.     - DataView Filter Not working I am using the following code to filter a DataView and then put the dataview back into a DataSet. I've verified that strFilter contains 683 values. The dataview initially has 1306 records before the filter. However, the resulting dataset that comes out has all 1306 rows. How is this possible since I'm filtering on 683 unique values?     - DataAdapter update method fails Hi. I got a problem with the OleDbDataAdapter object in .Net. The case is: I fill a dataset with data from an XML-file. This works fine. I then want to store the data into a database. This also seems to work fine. The problem ouccurs when I try to update the data in the table.     - renaming an element in a schema/dataset I read some xml data through a stream, and pass it to a dataset for it to read. First i initialize the dataset with an xml schema. The schema matches the data i get from the stream, but i want to change the name of some of the columns. Normally i would add some mappings to the dataadapter, but since i'm not using a dataadapter (there is no database involved - i get the xml data from a webservice) i don't know how. Is there any way you can define your schema, so it reads the correct data, but renames the column kinda like this: <xs:element name="date" type="xs:string" renamed-to="start-date" /> As far as i can see, there is no such attribute on the xs:element - or any other way to do it? All i want to do, is rename the column name and still (preferably) keep the relations to other tables/columns, without having to loop through the dataset creating a new one with different column names.     - Deserialize problem with OracleException On August 19, 2003, a reader discovered that he couldn't deserialize an OracleException. He began a thread with Scot Rose of Microsoft where he described the nature of the problem. The reader wrote, "We have narrowed it down to the constructor OracleException (System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationInfo si,System.Runtime.Serialization.StreamingContext sc), which looks for members "message" and "source", but the GetObjectData (...) method in the base (System.Exception) uses the strings "Member" and "Source". Scot Rose asked for a small project and the reader provided one. There is no record of a response from MS. So here's another project, a console app, that demonstrates the problem. I am running framework 1.0 with a "hotfix" version of System.Data.OracleClient.dll, version 1.0.1088.0 that fixes some of the MANY bugs in this provider.     - Simple Timeout question Hello, just been trying to find the answer to what I think should be a rather simple question but can't seem to find a definite yes or no. Anyway question is, are asp dot net pages (aspx) subject to the same script timeout that normal asp pages are? IE after the default 90 seconds would the aspx through a timeout or will they carry on until an error or the page has finished running. I tried the following lowering the script timeout to 30 seconds and then adding the following line Thread.Sleep(120000) (which should tell the thread to sleep for 2 minutes) but it carried on till the sleep command finished and displayed the page as normal. If it is the case that the timeout does not apply to aspx pages, is there some property in the web.config that can set a time or is best practices to have something within the classes that knows when and how to stop a particular process if it appears to be taking to long. are there any msdn articles that discuss these things (I haven't had much luck so far but it is monday morning). Or is asp.net sufficiently different to not require the web server to timout if an action takes too long(in asp it was there to safeguard future requests from having to wait to long). Hello,

my company offers a set of ado.net components for its own database
format and we want to respond to the general "Generate Dataset",
"Preview Data" and "Configure Data Adapter" commands in the menus.

In Visual Studio 2002 we had found a dirty trick to enable those
commands but this doesn't work with VS 2003 anymore.

The question now is whether there is now an official way to support
those commands for custom data providers. Or has somebody found another
way to activate them?

Any help apreciated
