    - Getting null value for the connection string rom web.config I'm trying to get connection string,stored in encrypted form, from web.config. I've wriiten key and value pair under Configuration->Appsettings tag of one assembly and have used it as string connString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings. AppSettings["ConnectionStringPlatform"] in a function of other assembly.I've also assigned a strong name and placed the assembly in global cache. I'm getting null value in connString.     - Dataset code...is this correct? ok, I am trying to make one call to the db and create a datalist and then populate a datalist and a datagrid with different filtered versions of the dataset. I presume this is a better way of doing it than making two seperate calls to the db where I could just use 2 stored procs to filter the data.     - Concurency Hello What is the equivalent of locking records for update to ensure that only one cliente really does it using disconnected recordsets?!?     - Concurrency problem I am controlling concurrency in my database records via a datetime column, with a stored procedure such as: UPDATE .......WHERE myid=@myid AND lastmodified=@lastmodified SELECT @lastmodified=lastmodified ........WHERE myid=@myid In this way, after any update, I get the new lastmodified column returned so that if the user saves the data again everything still works. This works as expected. However, if the update fails, I get the expected DBConcurrencyException, but the data in the Row property does not contain the new datetime value, but the original datetime. I can get at the new datetime by trapping the RowUpdated event and examining Command.Parameters, but as I am using a generic routine for all my updates I cannot use this method as different tables may have different datetime column names and I cannot pass the column name to the event.     - Oracle & MS Access Hello, I'm brand new to programming in VB.NET and for my first project I need to do the following: Connect to an Oracle database (till now no problem with ODBC) get a table and put it in a MS Access (2000) database. Till now I succeed in getting the table and putting it in a datagrid to show the result, I also can create an .mdb file but I don't succeed to put my table (dataset, or data table) into the Access application. That's one problem, the second is that normally this table is an historical table with several records for one person but with only a FROM field an not a TILL field, so it would be preferable that I immediately can add a field to it (TILL) that represents the day -1 from the next record as long as it is the same person (with first a sort on field personnr and from), the last record of that person must got the actual date as the TILL date (I managed this pure in Excel, but not in Access nor in VB.NET, but like I said I'm very very new in VB).     - find the position of an item in the middle of datarows In vb6, I use adodc and bind the fields to textbox.text. If I need to find the specific item, I just use adodc.recordset.find, then the cursor will move to the first occurence and textbox.text will show the the item you need. But in ado.net, there is no cursor in dataset. You have to use the position in bindcontext. If you just need to go through items one by one, that is ok, you just add one or subtract one from the position. But if you need to find an item in the middle, how can you know the position you need to move to?     - Selecting values from a datatable that don't exist in another table Hey y'all, I'm working on a program at the moment where items in the stocklist can be either top-level products or accessories. When listing top level products, i need to show every stock item that doesn't show up in the ProductAccessories table. A sample select statement in sql server is as follows: SELECT * FROM Stocklist WHERE NOT EXISTS( SELECT * FROM ProductAccessories WHERE ProductAccessories.AccessoryId = Stocklist.StockNo); A sample of the productaccessories table would be: ProductId AccessoryId ABC123 ABC124 I've all the tables in a dataset in memory though, and want to work with that. Can this be done using the rowfilter property or any other way? I've thought about building a rowfilter string by looping through the accessories table and appending a series of not equals such and such an id, but there could be thousands of products / hundreds of accessories.     - Saving data in DataSet from one source in another Hi, I have a dataset containing 2 tables from XML file. I have used XmlTextReader and DataSet.ReadXml to do it. These data are shown on user form using DataGrid. Now I would like to inset these data (after approving by the user) into 2 tables in SQL2000. Tables of course have required columns but with different names. Anybody knows how to do it? I thought about binding existing DataSet with new DataAdapter or making a new copy of DataSet.     - update record in access table Hi, I recently started learning VB.NET and I ran into a first problem I cannot get solved. When loading an access table into a datagrid, loading and updating is OK. (no problems so far) When I load the same date into textboxes, introduce some navigation buttons to the form to read different records, I can only "load" data from my accessDB but cannot update changes back to the DB. I assume my problem is generated because my update doesn't "know" witch row to update. Kan anyone provide me some example data on how to update records based on the explained situation? (in case my explenation is not cleat enough, please let me know.     - OOP data storage vs. SQL calls I have a general question for which I would like to get some general input from the online community. I'm building an asp.net web application that will make extensive use of a SQL Server 2K database. One of the relationships in this database is many Tasks to a 1 Project. I can see two basic ways to manage this in my web application: The first is by creating a Project class and a Task class, and talking directly to the database with either -- meaning that on each page where I need data about either a Project or a Task, I make the stored procedure calls and add, modify, or delete the data appropriately. The other is to use the IEnumerable interface so that I can do clever things like Project.Tasks.Add() and Project.Tasks.Modify(), etc. But, in this model, it seems to make more sense to get all the necessary data upon instantiation of the Project class, and then carry it around in a Session object, and make database calls as I need to in order to keep the class and the database in sync. OK, so here's the question -- which is more efficient, and is there a point of diminishing returns for the preferred answer. In short, does it make more sense to have more database calls (potentially every page), or to have one big one, and carry the enumerated object around in Session, making calls only as necessary. Please note that I realize that number of concurrent users, number of layers in the architecture, etc. are all factors in making the decision . . . I'm looking for an "all other things being equal, x is more efficient, and here's why . . . " Anyone got an opinion on this? Any input is appreciated. All the Data retriving that the application does is made=20 using the webservice... when a web form is loaded the web=20 page calls several functions of the web service to get the options to populate drop down boxes etc... so far i've been using datasets returned from the web=20 service to the page. example: in a form on dropdown box could have a list of=20 clients. In the web page, on form load, i invoke a=20 webmethod of my web service that returns a dataset to the=20 page with a table consisting of those records fetched. I've take an look at my code (posted below) and it looks fine, but this is my first attemp at ADO.NET with Stored Procedures on SQL Server. I currently don't have any maxpool setting configured, so it's using what ever the default is (100 I believe). I've tried to use SQL Profiler to find out how many active connections there are as well as PerfMon and SQL Ent. Mgr., but I can't seem to find anything that shows any bad connections. Any guidance would be appreciated.     - DataSet Undo System I'm trying to make an undo system for my application using adonet. The idea is simple: before performing the undoable operation make the copy of dataset. If the user wants to undo the changes, then restore the data from the old dataset. I have the following issues: 1. Many objects througth the form have references to a dataset and/or it's tables. So it is not enough just to replace the _dataSet variable but I would need to rebind all controls. I don't like it. 2. Because of what I said in the first bullet I am trying to replace the data inside the existing dataset like this: if (_copyOfDataSet != null) { _dataSet.Clear(); _dataSet.Merge(_copyOfDataSet, false); } but I'm far from sure that it warks as expected. So far, my simple experiments have shown that it works but I'm looking for your ideas and suggestions. Actually there are n copies of dataset after the user performs n undoable operations so I'm not looking for Accept/Reject Changes solution which would support only one "undo" operation.     - outer and internal loop inside a dataset How can I loop on a sorted datatable in order to sum an internal group? Here's what I mean: Dim tempacct As String For Each irow In dspslips.Tables(0).Rows tempacct = irow("bipad") & irow("issuecode") Do While irow("bipad") & irow("issuecode") = tempacct Loop Next The problem is the internal do while loop is endless because I don't see a way to increment irow inside a while loop. If I change it to a for each loop with, say, a .select("bipad = etc) it doesn't change anything because it doesn't move the outer loop except by one (next), whereas I want to make it move to the endo of the bipad/issuecode combination.     - Presenting Error Messages Does anyone have a suggestion on how to present error messages in a "user-friendly" way. I know how to "handle" exceptions but what I want to do (at a minimum) is present useful feedback to the user rather than a cryptic, technical looking error message. For instance, if I update a table (using SQLDataAdapter.UPDATE()) and it returns a "Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint..." message I want to tell the user: "User name entered already selected. Please select another" and not: "Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'IX_Customer_Duplicate_User_Name'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'Customer'.Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider" I can not find a way to find out what constraint was violated or what columns caused the error. I guess I could parse the error message and then "hard-code" a switch statement but that is not very "scalable" or "object oriented". Any suggestions?     - OraOLEDB.Oracle: Corrupt varchar2 column data in result rows Hi, We are using the Oracle OLEDB provider(9.2.0.2) and OLEDB data access components in .NET using C#. When we fetch more rows than the FetchSize connection string parameter (default 100), any varchar2 columns have corrupt data. Upon closer inspection the corrupt strings have the correct characters, it is that they are packed into 1 byte instead of being unicode (2 byte) characters. The first fetchsize number of rows are fine. Does anyone have a solution to this? We have the most recent Oracle Client and OLE DB provider. Just increasing the Fetchsize is not an option.
