    - Sending data to access query from Visual .net form Hi There, I have made a query called "Schedule",in access using few tables. Has fields like Order #, Required Date, Quantity ordered etc.. Depending upon the Required date field I provide on the input of the query. The query filters and displays results based on that. I want to use a form using Visual .net. The form would have a calender on it, when the users clicks on a particular date. I want that date to be sent as an input to the Required date field for my "Schedule" and display the result on the form. I have been trying to use Ado.net, but not sure how to send this date information to the query in access.     - Using IDataAdapter to fill a strongly-typed dataset We're using abstract interfaces for the data access in our classes. We're using strongly-typed datasets when using data adapters. We can use a SqlDataAdapter to fill a strongly-typed dataset using the Fill method, but we can't get the same result if we've cast the object to an IDataAdapter's fill method.     - Cannot open a password protected access database I am unable to open a password protected Access Database programtically. I have office 2003 installed on my machine. I am using the OleDb namespace in C#. I can open the database in access. I can open the database programatically if I remove the password.     - DataGrid paint exception when size too small I have a .NET windows forms application with one form displaying data. I have a tree view on the left side and the datagrid on the right side. Tree view allows the user to select verious items and based on that selection the datagrid is bound to the appropriate datasource and table from the database. This works well. The problem comes when I resize my form and the grid portion is not visible or just barely visible. Now when I perform the same operations by selecting various items in the tree I get an exception System.ArgumentException with Message : '0' is not a valid value for 'value'. 'value' should be between 'minimum' and 'maximum'. Source : System.Windows.Forms. This happens when I call SetDataBinding method. When I again resize the form so that the grid is more visible this problem goes away. I have also seen a bizzare display with red cross over the entire grid area when I resize the grid again.     - Parameter ?_1 has no default value I'm using the HierCube .net OLAP component from rainbowsoft (http://www.rbwsoft.com/) in a vb winform application (vs2003). The data source is an MS Access 2000 table; the data adapter is of the oledb type; and the sql string has two parameters ala =? At runtime the app provides values for the params like so: oledaPivotData.SelectCommand.Parameters("Conversion").Value = cboConversion.SelectedValue oledaPivotData.SelectCommand.Parameters("Year").Value = cboYear.SelectedValue The cube works fine. However the cube control won't let me access the Dimension Mapping facility, it complains that "Parameter ?_1 has no default value". I'm not sure how to solve this. I've written to the control developers, but they can be slow to respond...and this issue seems to be more generic than specific to this control.     - Question about DataSet.WriteXML method. I have a DataSet in which one row contains a column with a string that has CR or LF characters in it. I am converting this DataSet to XML by calling DataSet.WriteXml(). I would have expected CR and/or LF characters to be translated to numeric character entry values. Instead, they are written out as absolute.     - MSSQL - ON DELETE SET NULL Hello NG, Does SQL Server support "ON DELETE SET NULL"? I have a couple of CREATE TABLE / ALTER TABLE commands that are all in one string, separated by ";\r\n", and send them to SQL Server (without transaction context). The SQL itself is created dynamically, but here is a sample (for simplicity, I scrapped irrelevant stuff). I always get an SqlException with as many SqlErrors in it as there are ON DELETE SET NULL occurances. The same thing works with Access, though (with Jet-SQL syntax of course). Or (being a consumer product) is Jet just "fault tolerant" and ignores that?     - Master-Detail records I wrote an application in .NET 2003, everything worked fine for several weeks. This application has several text boxes and a detail grid. I put navigation buttons on the form to move to the next record, which will also change the data in the grid. I didn't make any changes to the application, but all of a sudden, the detail grid quit updating with changes to the position of the master. If I just did it wrong in the first place and it should have never worked, then that's the way it is, but I would like to know what I did wrong, and maybe some ideas of why it would all of a sudden decide to stop working.     - Data Adapter Problem? The following is an issue using ado.net in an asp.net page using SQL Server.... I have a Statement that when executed from my asp.net dataadapter takes about 24,000 reads according to SQL Profiler. I think the read count is accurate as it grids a long time. The same statement when executed from Query analyzer takes only 116 reads and it executes quickly. Why the Difference? Same table, same server.     - bound comboboxes I have three comboboxes on the form. When the record is displayed, all the three combo boxes are blank. If I select a value in the first combo box, and click save, the first value in the other combo box is displayed automatically.     - Wierd Occurrance I have an intermittant problem that occurs a couple of times a week in a handful of places in the code (the same places at different times). The error is 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. After much research (it's not my code), I've found that it is occuring when a datareader is being used after being returned from a another method that queries an Oracle database. The first thing the calling code does is check to see if the returned datareader is closed. When this statement executes the datareader object does not exist. It looks as if a database connection and subsequent query are being done successfully (nothing in error logs), but when the datareader is returned the reference to the datareader is lost. I can tell you that most of the things this application does involve at least a few calls to GetDataReader(), and sometimes there are quite a few calls to perform a certain function.     - Performance Problems with filtering in Dataview Hi all! I would really appreciate getting some help on the following problem: I use a cached dataview as a source for my datagrid. The user selects items from controls and based on the selections a filter is applied on the dataview and the datagrid re-databinded. Now the problem: when I test the application on the server it works extremely fast, the filtering processes within 2 to 3 seconds on a datatable with 4000 rows! When I try to access the same site on the server from a client-Computer in the business network the filtering takes about 40 to 60 seconds!!! Does anyone have a clue how to explain these extreme performance differences?     - SPs, sqlCommand and Terminal Services Hi all, I just ran into something very, very strange.. I have this application which fires of a series of SQL Scripts using the sqlCommand Object. One of the statements executes the procedure "sp_addMergePublication" on the server. If I do this on a local machine, everything works fine. But if I run my application on a server using Terminal Services then the application will Halt on that statement saying that "A severe error has occured." and that any changes should be discharged. Note. This happens ONLY when I run the application remote and it is not an error bound to a specific machine. I can recreate the problem on any given server.     - Losing records in a transaction I'm currently using .NET 1.0 and MS .NET provider for Oracle to connect to my Oracle9i R2(9.2.0.5) database. Off late I have been getting database locks and subsequent slowness in the application. My DBA tracks down the holding statements and kills the session. Now, if the script used in InsertTb1() happens to be the statement of the assocated session that was killed, I expect Oracle to throw an exception, which inturn should be caught in the catch block and the whole transaction shoud be rolled back. But, it looks like I do not get an exception, due to which the code proceeds to fire the subsequent statements (InsertTb2(), UpdateTb3()) and I end up with incomplete records in the database. I have had an instance before, where Oracle database was throwing a 'No Data found' exception, but the exception never bubbled to my code i.e. The .NET provider ignored the excepton. But in some situations such as database backup process, I got timeout error and my program will retry to inject until success.     - DataSet and GC.SuppressFinalize We are having issues with DataSet and related objects. They are staying in the memory for too long. When we started investigating the problem, windows debugger (windbg) showed that they are in the finalization queue. This surprised us as we were not aware that they have finalizers defined. The .net framework code (mentioned in this email) is reverse engineered by Anarkino tool. Even though DataSet does not define a finalizer, it derives from MarshalByValueComponent (MBVC) which does implement finalizer. In addition, the DataSet does not define a Finalize method but the base class does. However the base class has only proteted Finalize method. This means only derived classes can call this method. The constructor of DataSet makes GC.SuppressFinalize(this) call. Thinking that we have to call Dispose method, we checked for Dispose method implementation on DataSet. Well, it is not there. But MBVC has it. To my surprise, it is making GC.SuppressFinalize(this) again in the MBVC's Dispose method. This means these objects will never be finalized (is this right?) That is 2 times we saw the GC.SuppressFinalize between DataSet and MBVC implementations. Can any one explain why the supress call is required when we are not using any typed datasets? Is there an elegant way to make them disappear faster (other than using ReRegisterForFinalize method)? This problem applies all classes the derive from MBVC. Thanks. Raghu/..     - Efficient Database Paging Tests I have been trying to determine the fastest way to implement database paging for an Access database with an ASP.NET front-end. I have a difficult database because the user can change the sorting and the fields are not unique, which excludes the "Select TOP" approach. Also the database has about 60,000 records and is growing. The user has to always have current data which excludes caching. I've tried the following approaches: 1. Using an OleDBDataAdapter to fill a datatable and then displaying the paged records from the table. 2. Using an OleDBDataAdapter to partially fill a dataset with the paged records and then running a second command to retrieve to the total records. 3. Looping through an OleDBDataReader until I get to the paged records and a second command to retrieve to the total records. 4. Looping through an OleDBDataReader to get the paged records and then completing the loop to count the total records. All 4 methods return the current total records which I need to set up my paging menu. Approach #1 if by far the slowest (up to 4 times slower) in every scenario. Approach #2 is the fastest most of the time. The Microsoft documentation warns that this approach is inefficient, but I have not found this to be the case. The only case where this approach faults is when the query's WHERE clause is very complicated. However, when there is no WHERE statement or ORDER BY and the page is near the start of the records then this approach is about 4 times faster than the next fastest. Approach #3 is slightly slower than #2 and also faults when the WHERE statement is complex. Approach #4 is also only slightly slower than #2, and it is not slowed down by a complex WHERE statement.
