    - dataadapter and component I'm creating a component that contains a function. This function is to return a data set of state values (AL,IL,TN,CA,...). I'm new to dataadapters this is my first, but something just doesn't seem right. the function return a dataset, but do it need to define a dataset in the body of the function as well as in the calling routine? 2. can i bind this dataset to two different drop down lists? here is my function.     - No cursor when compared with ADO After a dataset has been populated, it no longer reflects changes in database. It is the shortcoming I found in ADO.NET. In ADO, we have dynamic recordset, keyset recordset which can reflect the changes to database done by other users immediately. Why can't I find these useful stuff in ADO.NET?     - Memory leak in OleDbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()? Maybe there's something I'm doing wrong here. I'm open to any suggestions. I'll see if I can explain this clearly... I have a C# application that runs 24x7 collecting data from some source and storing the data in a Microsoft Access database. The problem is, every time it stores the data using a call to OleDbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(), the applications memory usage grows. After a few days, the application has consumed most of the systems' virtual memory and grows more and more sluggish and unresponsive. The only solution right now is to restart the application every couple of days. Since the app uses one database and stores the same database fields with only the data changing, I set up everything at the start of the program. After that, as data comes in, only the stored data parameter values change. The first thing I do is open the MS Access database using an OleDbConnection with a Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 provider. I then create a OleDbCommand with a command string that basically consists of "INSERT INTO table (field1, field2...) VALUES (?,?...)". Next I use OleDbCommand.Parameters.Add to add OleDbParameter data parameters that correspond to each field to the OleDbCommand, with the proper datatype for each field. Lastly I set the OleDbConnection in the OleDbCommand. As the data is collected I go through each OleDbParameter and set its Value to either the data collected or DBNull.Value if the data is missing. Then I call OleDbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery to actually store the data. That occurs successfully, but the virtual memory alllocation goes up and up each time the data is stored. I monitor the memory usage with Sysinternals ProcExp, and if I comment out the call to actually store the data, the memory usage remains constant.     - XML Schema (XSD) and ADO.net DataSet - limitations mapping between them The following valid XSD schema can NOT be successfully read by the ReadXMLSchema method of the DataSet object - it errors out with a "NonEmptyString not defined" error.     - Extracting enum from table Hi, I'm reading the result of a query using MySqlDataReader. I'd like to extract information about the row datatypes that are returned. For example, myDataReader.GetFieldType(1).TosTring() will easily return values such as "System.UInt32" or "System.Byte". My problem is that i'd like to retrieve information about enum types. My datatype in the MySQL db is defined as: ENUM('red','blue','orange') but the above code will return "System.String". I'm interested in retrieving something that will give me all valid input types for an enum field in the database. I've also tried looking at the System.Data.DataTable object but didn't find any clues on how to solve this.     - Broken Web Links Within Microsoft Access I have built a database in Microsoft Access 2003 that has a number of links that go out to the web. Does anyone know of a way I could set up my database to check which links are active and which ones are inactive? Because the links are added and removed, I would need to run this once a day, so any automation would be nice.     - Strange slow down with imbricated DataReader (Oracle, c#) This is my first c# windows app. I create a data reader on an Oracle table. Returns 552 rows. I iterate thru them, goes like light speed. Next, for each row returned, I need to fetch from another table to get some other information. When I do that, my program takes 20s instead of 1s. I even downgraded my inner SQL to become "select 1 from dual", same performance hit! Is there a problem with Oracle under c# using two DataReader at the same time? Make sure in the stored procedure you declare the variable like this for variables that might not have any data: Make it equal nothing or null @mainnotes TEXT = '', or @mainnotes TEXT = null This fixed my problem, and I'm sure there are more solutions but, I hope this helps.     - Architecture: One Producer, Many Consumers Hi all, This sounded like a really easy R&D challenge but .NET is leaving me with too many options and I don't have six months to experiment and find the best one. Hence I would like to lean on this board's expertise. Environment is C#/.NET/SQLServer2k/VisStudio .NET. I have several remote applications that are delivering data to a central server. This server process is archiving the data in an SQL 2000 db. Now I also have one to about a dozen fixed clients on a WAN, which need to be notified when a change takes place to the central database so they can update their UI to reflect the changes. What is everyone's suggestion for doing this? Any resources out there you can point me at? I've run the gamut from remoting, to serialising the DataSets (which scares me due to the amount of data that may start going over the channel), to considering whether the remote clients should be writing directly to the db (although bandwidth limitations tend to prohibit TCP-like connections), to wondering why there doesn't seem to be any way for a client to simply connect to an SQL database and be told when changes occur... and so on. Is there something I've missed? This seems like a straightforward client-server requirement. Any help gratefully appreciated, and thanks in advance.     - Trouble with creating DataRelations - Need Help I am building an App that takes an Excel file and populates 3 DataTable's in a Dataset. I then was to create a relationship between these 3 DataTables. After dong so I want to run some code to process / modify the data in the tables and then return the result back into an Excel file.     - closing connection not by design Hi, i wanted to get this groups opinions on a design issue ive run into: a programmer has coded a common data access class which is supposed to be inherited by all data access layers at my firm. This class instantiates a connection in the constructor, relies heavily on OleDb objects by necessity, and does stuff like returns DataReaders and creates DataSets and Command objects. Before using this class i looked thru the methods and noticed that there is no exception handling, so whenever error occurs, open connections and OleDb DataReaders and command objects never get closed/disposed. Being a helpful fool, i suggested to this programmer that it would be good idea to ensure that these methods clean up unmanaged resources that they create per best practice. The response i got is that "you dont understand the design", this decision was intentional... all code that calls this classes methods must write their own code to cleanup these resources in event of an error. He did not want to "restrict users of the class from flexibility in how they handle errors". Given that: 1. No other programmers who use this class were aware of this necessity 2. the programmer who wrote this class himself never checks for errors from code that calls these methods 3. its not possible for others to cleanup resources created within those methods 4. you can still pass exceptions to the caller and still dispose resources you create. 5. there are numerous problems with applications in production which use this data access class. my impression is that instead of accepting that a (fairly common) mistake/oversight was made and quickly taking basic steps to correct it, this programmer has decided to defend the indefensible.     - How does ADO.NET handle transactions when the connection is broken Hi, We are thinking of using ADO.NET to implement transactions on our SqlConnections, but would like to know how ADO.NET and SqlServer handle the situation when the connection gets broken. We have a client application in one location and a SqlServer DB in another location. We have tested the commit and rollback actions on a good connection and everything works great! When the connection gets dropped after the BeginTransaction method gets called however SqlServer seems to take a while before realising the connection has been dropped and rolling back the transaction (5 minutes). This means that the records updated inside the transaction before the connection was dropped remain locked for 5 minutes before being rolled back. Is there any way we can configure or control the timeout period?     - Having problem with SQLConnection.ChangeDatabase() method. I have multiple databases in which I want to traverse. Each database is secured using Applicaiton Roles. I use the SQLConnection object to connect to the first database. I run the sp_setapprole procedure and I can access the tables with no problem. However, when I try to call the ChangeDatabase method on my connection object, I get an exception thrown stating that my application role user is not a valid user in the database. If I connect to the same database using Open, it works fine. I don't quite understand what is going on here.     - Can't find stored procedure On Sql Server 2000, my program can't seem to find the Stored Procedure: AddNewResumeTemplate. Most of the columns are varchar's of varing lengths and one of the columns is defined as a char(2). Using the datareader I can get the values of the varchar columns, but the char column returns empty.     - Replacing MSDE Hello, I have made a Windows Application in C#, with a database running under MSDE. The application is quite simple, and there is only 3 tables, and only one has maybe 200-250 records maximum (the 2 others have only 10-20 records).     - Messages in ADO.NET I would like to be able to execute a long-running stored procedure from a Windows Forms application. The procedure loops through about 7,000 items, calling various other procedures along the way, and progress is displayed in SQL Query Analyzer using the Print command. I install Crystal Reports 8, and some permissions for the=
registry subkeys and their lower-level subkeys are modified=2E I=
used a Crystal restoration utility, and everything come back=
fine again, all except for the OLEDB connections using=
Microsoft=2EJet=2EOLEDB=2E4=2E0
provider, I can't connect to excel files anymore, I guess is=
something about the registry subkeys=2E Thanks=2E
