    - Help with DataTable update (BeginLoadData method) I have an ASP.NET/VB app that updates values in a DataTable over the course of about 3 different pages. On the way out of the first of these pages, I explicitly build the DataTable from values in a DataGrid, and set the PrimaryKey of the DataTable to be the first cell in the grid (which is a UserID value). I then store the DataTable in a session object, from which it is retrieved for subsequent pages. All this seems to be working fine. On the second page, I retrieve the DataTable from the session object, apply a filter to it, and display the filtered data in a DataGrid. In this grid, the user can change the data, specifically assigning an employee to a different supervisor. The Grid is populated with the current employee/supervisor assignment in the database, and then any necessary changes are made by the user. This, too, seems to be working fine. The problem I'm having is that on the update command of the Grid, which is where I'm updating the DataTable (the thought being that I would just do an "in-place" update of the DataTable and then rebind the grid). I am able to trap the new assignment values (which are set in a listbox within the grid) and can trap the employee ID value from the grid (which is my primary key), but whenever I call the LoadDataRow method, rather than updating the row based on the primary key, a new row insert is *attempted*. I say attempted because I get an error on the EndLoadData method, which I believe is due to not passing in values for all the columns. I was hoping to be able to just pass in the key value and the values of the columns that had changed, but apparently that is not sufficient. Which is the first question - when attempting a LoadDataRow call, do I need to pass in valid values for *all* of the columns in the datatable (except, of course, those for which there are default values, of which I have none in this instance). You'll see in my example code that I'm just passing in the first, eighth and ninth columns, which I suspect is the problem. However, the *real* question is why isn't the LoadDataRow method finding the pre-existence of the key value in the table? I've checked and the value returned by my code is exactly the same as the one in the table, length is the same, etc. I set the primary key when I first build the table on the previous page, but I thought perhaps that attribute somehow gets lots when I set the DataTable to a session object so, as you will see in the example, I explicitly set the primary key again on this page, which seems to work, but the code still inserts a new row (or attempts to).     - OleDB troubles reading Excel spreadsheet I'm trying to use an OleDbConnection to read some data from an Excel Spreadsheet. I create my connection string, and open the connection, but when i query the sheet/table i get the error that OleDb could not find the sheet. I've now tried to get a list of the sheets (to see if i was using the wrong sheet name or something) but my list of sheets comes back with 0 entries. Any Help! this spreadsheet DOES have 2 sheets inside it... What am i not doing? Are there any good examples/resources out there for reading Excel in this way?     - FIND like old ADO method Is there any kind of FIND in ADO.NET that works the same way as the old ADO Recordset FIND? The old ADO Find would accept a criteria string, and then find the first record that matches the criteria. For instance, rs.Find("text_value like '* | *') would position me on the first record that contained a bar (' | '). It didn't filter anything, but just positioned the database at that record (or, in ADO.NET, would give me the row index of the first record matching this criteria). I see SELECT on a datatable and ROWFILTER on a dataview, but these all filter... I simply want to find the first record matching this criteria. I can probably get around it by simply reading all the records and programatically searching for the first one that matchs, but was hoping for a built-in solution. Thanks in advance.     - sproc with output param and a trigger We have been using the same sproc for an insert for quite some time. The sproc create a new key for the record to insert, uses the key for the insert and then has an output param for the key. The key field in the DataTable is 'names_id'. The is the sourcecolumn for the sql output param. Yesterday, one of our developers added an insert trigger to the table the sproc inserts into. Now, we are getting an exception that state 'name_id' cannot be Null. Very strange as his usually suggests to me I am passing in a parameter that is NULL. Well, names_id is not a param to the sproc. It's the source column for the sql output param. I am new to triggers so I have no idea what introducing the trigger has done. Anyone know what the source column for an output param would all of a sudden be NULL? Strange thing to is I no longer see the sproc running in SQL Profiler.     - SP works when debugged/execute via query analyser but not when called from ADO.NET Hi, Okay heres a bit of background. Running WinXP Pro SP1, IIS5.1, SQL Server 2000 SP3, VS.NET 2003, Framework 1.1. This is porting job from VB6 webclass app to VB.NET httphandler DLL. I have a database wrapper class which has methods like RunSP etc... so all my DB calls use the same code so the problem is not that I am coding the command object differently or anything like that. Any way I call an SP that both creates and deletes data. The SP in fact calls other SPs and the SP uses BEGIN TRANS etc... However for some reason after it has been run the data is not correct, its almost as if one of the inner called SPs has failed or been passed the wrong ID or something. However if I pause the code on the line that calls my .RunSP method, and then go to query analyser and either debug and step through the SP or just execute it straight and then manually by hand set variables in my code to those values that would normally be set by the output parameters of the SP then it all works fine!!! I tried taking out all the BEGIN TRANS from the SPs and inner SPs involved but still the same problem. I am a bit new to the whole .NET thing, and while I like using it a lot, things that should be simple are really P*£"ing me off. Any help about what to look for or check would be much appreciated.     - HTTP 404 Error for ASP.NET pages The web server is running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, and it returns HTTP 404 error when running ASP.NET pages, but ASP pages are working fine. I also installed Visual Studio .NET, and the framework version should be 1.1.     - Web Services with large datasets I'm designing an app that will need to run in environment where different data is on different DB servers and OS'es (SQL Server, Oracle, Windows, AS400 etc). My app will need to pull together data from a few separate databases and then run some reports on the data. My original thinking was that XML and webservices would be the route to go. I could have someone provide a webservice that would give me some XML that I could turn into a dataset to be analyzed to create the reports. This is great in theory, but when I look at the sizes of the XML files, I'm not so sure. Webservices seem to be better suited to passing around small datasets or scalar values. How to people generally deal with this? Is the XML file size less of an issue than it seems to me? Or, do I need to look at figuring out a way to get a more direct connection to datasources in cases like this (i.e. reporting)? I know on the DB end I can quickly switch providers, but the SQL for one DB backend never seems to translate to a different DB backend, so you're stuck modifying much of the SQL too.     - Navigating a dataset 'randomly' Hello, I retrieve all the Ids from a DB table. The 'current' Id is used to retrieve all the columns associated with that Id. I need to Move Next and Move Previous. The DBEnumerator is a Forward-only tool. A "For Each Row" solution would enclose nearly the entire application in the loop and still would not work. Since a "Find" is supported, maintaining a Global index to step through the rows collection would not be effective. There are upwards of 14,000 rows in the table, so I am not eager to use an array. I must use a Web Service and ADO.NET disconnected datasets. How does one navigate forward and backward relative to the current row without knowing the index (or can we learn the index? Greetings all - I'm fairly new to working with UNION queries within ASP/VB .NET and I'm struggling with trying to find suggestions on how to implement a solution to this issue. I'm developing 4 queries .........1 from 1 data source, 1 from a separate data source, 1 to UNION the first two together and the last to query against the 3rd query to populate into a Crystal Report (which I haven't figured out how I'm going to accomplish yet). Since I'm running these queries in the code-behind as run time queries, is it even possible to run a UNION statement in this setup without having issues with the FROM clauses in the UNION since I'm wanting to pull from the data tables in the first 2 datasets that I have created already? I've got an application which executes an stored procedure using an OdbcCommand object, but it has to executes several stored procedures at the same time, so i decided use multithreading, so that the application creates a thread for each stored procedure and start it in this way class ClassWithMethod { public void MyMethod() { //here stored procedure executes } } class Test { static public Main (string[] args) { ClassWithMethod obj = new ClassWithMethod(); Thread myThread = new Thread (new ThreadStart (obj.MyMethod)); myThread.Start(); } } But in the application a new thread is created each time an event happens, and each time a thread is created the application is creating a new OdbcConnection (ODBC 'cause it uses a Sybase 10 database) and it is closing the connection in the finally block of the method MyMethod (describe before) but, to close the connection the application is verifying that the connection it is gonna close be an open connection, if it is not an open connection it throws an exception, and my problem is that this exception i mentioned is throwing in some cases, i.e. just in some cases, i.e. in some thread which the connection is trying to be closed, the application detects that this connection of this thread is closed. So, anyone can undarstand why is happennig this??? or is there a better or more efficcient way to manage connections in multithreading???? Any help i will thank!!! Regards!!!!     - Problem with RichTextBox and Access Db I have an application that gets data from a Access database and displays it on a form. I have a slightly odd and annoying problem that stems from the fact that the program I'm replacing with my program was writing in VBA in Access. The problem is that the RichTextBox control in Access uses '/n/b' as an end of line character while the RichTextBox in C#.NET uses just '/n'. The reason why this is a problem is because it tricks my app into thinking that a field has been changed because between moving the data from the database to my RichTextBox control and then back to the database again all the end of line characters get changed. Now dealing with this would be very simple, but I have code that checks each control and tries to determine if really has changed before updating the dataset and I want a solution that is very general and doesn't require me to cludge up my program with a lot of checks for this one case.     - Handling SqlException during DataAdapter.Update I am using ADO.NET datasets to transfer information between my client and business logic. When I fill the dataset and some dataset contraint is triggered, then the FillError event is triggered, that can be handled. My database contains some constraints that can be triggered when propagating the dataset changes back to the database. I use the SqlDataAdapter.Update to send this information to the database. Unfortunately, there is no UpdateError event that can be handled. I would have liked an event for these errors that specify the datatable, row and SqlException (a bit like the FillErrorEventArgs). I have created a workaround, but this looks horrible. I call the dataadapter's Update method and catch the SqlException. Then I will iterate through the dataset and find the first non-Unchanged row. That should have been the row that has failed. Things become even more complex when relational datasets are being updated, because they are updated in a different order. When a UpdateError event would have existed, then this would have been much more easy. Now I investigate the SqlException by checking the message number and parsing the message string.     - DataAdapter number of columns limitation? Hi I'm trying to write strongly typed dataset. Ma DB has Tables with more then 100 columns each. Creating DataAdapter, DataSet and DataAdapter Commands by wizard fails. Doing it manually is not pleaserfull. I've discovered that when number of columns in table exceedes 100 Then DataAdapter fails on creating Insert, Update, Delete, Commands. Why is it happening?
