    - Selecting, Inserting and Updating Relational Data (SQLServer/ADO.NET) Dear Group, I have a heirarchical set of database tables, say - "order" and "order_type" and want to display a series of orders in a grid control, and in place of the order_type foreign key identifier, I would like a dropdown combo box (lookup from the "order_type" table) to change the type of the order. I also need an update command button, a delete row button and also an insert new row button. I'm sure this is a very common design pattern, although I can't find any good tutorials anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction, as I want to get the design pattern right from the very beginning. Also a couple of specific questions: 1) If I use a typed dataset with a SQL query to return the rows, and databind this to the grid control - how can I override/load the order_type column to load a combobox lookup dropdown? 2) If I use a typed dataset with a SQL query and the relations set, bound to the grid control - how can I change the WHERE clause dynamically at runtime? Since I'm building the dataset at designtime, I can't see how I can restrict the amount of data queried in memory (example: WHERE customer_name = "bob"). I can do all of the above in ADODc, and with careful use of recordsets; but I'm sure ADO.NET would be faster for this job! I'm using ADO.NET 2.0, VB2005 (Professional Edtn) and SQL Server Express.     - SQL Server processes and ADO.NET Hello, I have a web application accessing SQL Server 2K through ADO.NET The application is working fine, but while monitoring the processes in SQL Server Enterprise Manager, I noticed each user connecting to the application creating a NEW process in "awaiting command" state.     - How to initialice a default value for a column in a typed DataSet Hi all... I have a typed dataset that corresponds to a SQL Server database model. I have in a table a datetime column that cannot be null, but it has a default value of getdate(). How can I set the default value for the corresponding DataSet table?     - Trouble with DefaultValue on Typed DataSet Using the Visual Studio designer, I can easily create a typed dataset. It is possible to set default values for table columns by setting the default in the designer. I can do this easily for boolean and integer types, but if I have a string field and I want to set the default to "", I can not find a way to do this. If I go into the auto generated cs file and make the change, it gets wiped out if I ever make any other changes in the designer.     - parameter question Is it possible to use a parameter in conjuntion with an IN statement? For example, if I have the following SQL, select * from table where key in ('1','2','3') How can I make the values in the IN be a param? If I do the following. select * from table where key in (@invals) I can't make a parameter like so, param = new sqlparameter("@invals","'1','2','3'") It simply returns no results.     - Updating - let me count the ways There are several ways of updating a database through ADO.Net 2. In my case, I'm interested in using queries to update my Access data. I'm not sure what all the pros and cons are for each method. Below I've listed what I know, I'd welcome some discussion. And some correction on the 'terms' if required For my examples, I have a table called Weeks. This table has a boolean field, PastWeek. I wish to set this to true for all weeks prior to a supplied week number. Which one do you use? Whats the fastest to run?     - Can't open two DataReaders to the same connection I don't know if I am outdated or is my grouse still valid. I am trying to connect two concurrent DataReader objects to the same connection, but the attempt fails with the error "Another DataReader is already open, it needs to be closed.. bla..bla.." Using good old ADO I could connect as many Recordsets I wanted through one connection, so how come ADO.Net is not allowing me to connect two DataReaders? I think I read somewhere that this can be done through .Net Framework 2.0. Is this true? How stable is .Net 2.0? Are there any big issues that I should know about?     - Specify alternative base class for strongly-typed DataSet Our application, currently in .NET 1.1, uses strongly-typed DataSets as business objects. These have been created using a third-party generator (from AdoGuy.com) which reproduced the standard Microsoft STD code, but added a couple of extra things to make deriving from the generated DataSet/Table/Rows work properly. The generator was open-source, and I modified it to allow me to specify different base classes for the DataSet/Table/Rows, so I could add common functionality there-in. So now we want to move the project into 2.0, and the original motive for the alternative generator no longer exists, because STDs are declared as partial, so business logic can be added in a separate file. But I now have a lot of code in my alternative base classes, which would have to be duplicated in each and every DataSet/Table/Row. We've got half a dozen DataSets, with an average of eight tables in each, and I expect to create another half a dozen over the next year, so that'd be a lot of work. (Of course, when C# 3.0 appears, I could just use an extension method, but I can't really wait another two-to-three years...) What I'd like to do is find a way of changing the base classes in the generated code as easily as possible. Does anyone know of a third-party DataSet generator that will let me do this? Alternatively, how feasible would it be to write a VS2005 plug-in to change the base classes in the generated code, preferably automagically after the MS generator runs when the XSD is saved, but manually if necessary? I've also considered writing a plug-in to generate an additional partial class with the extra code in, but that would inflate the classes quite a lot.     - SqlServer Express, Firebird & stored procedure question I want to toy with an embeded database for shareware application. I would like to know better SqlServer as well. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that as much as I would like to play with SqlServerExpress it seems higly unfit to this kind of application for the following reasons: - +20Mb to the install plus strange question to answer (for the clueless user) - Even though SqlServer express is installed your consumer application could fail if the service is, for some reason, off. - Even though SqlServer express is up and running you might not have connect access right to it, or right to create a new (file based) database (if need to), or maybe the server name is not what you expect and it can't be guess (or could 127.0.0.1 be used?) Because of these problem I was thinking to use Firebird (real, embeded, file based, database engine). Is the Procedural SQl language of Firebird the same as SqlServer express?     - SQL Server Starting Points Greetings - Several of you were helpful in disuading me from using Jet in a prior post. I'm developing an application that needs a "person manager" attached to it, with typical interfaces like "add person" "edit person" "get list of people" plus some custom items. A few questions. I'm experienced in relational database design, access and .net, but not at all in sql server: 1. How steep is the learning curve on SQL Server? 2. Any suggestions for good materials on getting started (most of the documentation looks geared to those who are proficient with prior versions) 3. Any suggestions for how I can find a third party to get me started on this -- most of the solution providers listed online seem to be looking to do large turnkey packages. I'd be looking more for some part time development and mentoring consulting to get this launched and then back in my hands. Any ideas where I can find this (I'm just outside of NYC, fwiw).     - Copy just some rows from a datatable to another datatable. I have a datatable with a field in it that tells me where the data belongs (let's say the values are 'A' and 'B'). I want to split the table into two other tables where in one there are only the 'A' records and the other one has only the 'B' records. What's the easiest way to do it? I have a paramaterized command for a data adapter SELECT MRN, Name, Sex, DOB, SSN FROM dbo.Membership WHERE (MRN = @MRN or @MRN is null) AND (Name like @Name or @Name is null) AND (Sex = @Sex or @Sex is null) etc. The name of that result set is from a stored procedure called: qMembershipSelect for 1.4 million records, this ensures that the data will come up quickly because all I'm doing is filtering between 1-4 parameters. But after the first select is done, I'd like to apply additional filtering to that result set that weeds out other stuff like duplicate records and selects a true Current member: SELECT DISTINCT MRN, MemNAME AS Member, DOB, SEX, SSN, GROUP, SGR, [FROM-DT], [THRU-DT] FROM qMembershipSelect AS Y GROUP BY MRN, MemNAME, DOB, SEX, SSN, GROUP, SGR, [FROM-DT], [THRU-DT] HAVING [THRU-DT] Is Null Or [THRU-DT] In (Select Max(X.[Thru-Dt]) From qMembershipSelect As X Where X.MRN = Y.MRN And X.MRN Not in(Select Z.MRN From qMembershipSelect As Z Where Z.[THRU-DT] Is Null)) ORDER BY MemNAME, [FROM-DT] DESC; Obviously this 2nd layer of filtering wouldn't be so tedious to a smaller dataset as it would to 1.4 million records at the start.     - Dataadapter produces error: Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement The code below loads an Access table with one row. It then adds a row and displays all this in a datagridview. So far so good. My challenge is that I can't reuse the wrapper code for this table generated by Visual Studio, because although wrapper classes represent identical structures, they have different identities.     - Problem connecting to sql server Hi, I am using XP Pro SP2, VS.NET 2003 & IIS 5. I used to develop an ASP.NET application on my PC on my local IIS, connecting to a LAN server which hosts my MSSQL database. I have no problem running the web app locally. After I reformat and reinstall XP, I could not run the app anymore. The app could not find the SQL server. But I can connect to the server via Enterprise Manager installed locally and browse the tables. And I can even ping the server. I have tried using both IP and servername but to no avail. However, my machine can connect when I tried using normal windows application, using the same connection string. I think I am missing something bcos I used to have the same problem last time.     - Problem using diffgram I'm use diffgarm xml (for update) which is sent with a schema with sqlxmlcommand whith sqlxml version 3 sp3. This mechanizem used ALL the parameters in the before xml as the parameters used in the where clause used by update commands to the data base. 1.     - Managing "Row ID" for Table Inserts Using c# and Visual Studio 2003, I've begun to wonder whether I'm adding rows to Oracle tables correctly. The tables often have "row ID" columns and, before adding a row, I pull the "max" ID value from a table, add 1 to it, and then use that number as the new "row ID" (the base table then gets updated, so the dataset and table are not long out of sync). I'm sure this approach is wrong, since, among other issues, the "max" ID returned could be wrong if, for instance, a recently-added row was deleted. I don't know, however, how else to do this. Should I instead use stored procedures? How can I add rows to my dataset tables and know what "row ID" the underlying table will expect during the row insert (especially with other users potentially hitting the database)? It is more like ADO or DAO than anything else that I have seen as far as coding in a VB application goes. It appears to be very fast and efficient too!     - Philosophical question: how often to submit updates to database A concept I've waffled on from time-to-time with ADO.Net: how often to submit updates back to the database. For example, I have some CF apps where it's quite obvious the *when* part of submitting the update -- soon as you come off of the record. For other desktop apps, it's not quite so obvious. For example, I have a CRM app where there are dozens of fields for one customer record, as well as many different datatables for sales, appointments, etc.. So, I wonder: submit the update every time a single change is made or submit it only when a different customer is selected? The downside to the update for every single change is the obvious network/server overhead; the downside for waiting on a customer change is what if the app gets closed/crashes, etc? What is the simplest way to send an email message through the MS SQL Server?

There was a method to send email messages using a standard C# way via SMTP
server, but the required port was blocked on our server for the security
reasons. So there is the only one method that I see to send my messages. The
idea was to send these messages about some critical events, exceptions,
etc., happening with our web application. The mechanism was already written
and working but I need to switch to the MS SQL Server to get it working
again.

Can anybody give any idea, or code, or links? I know that this feature
should be built into the MS SQL Server.
