    - DataReader Vs DataSet At several times in my code I am opening and reading data from data reader. Would using the DataSet instead improve the performance?     - Datagrid I am not sure if this question belongs to this group, but I will really appreciate any responses. I am making a windows application using C#. I have to make a copy-paste program which works on DataGrid. I have connected a datagrid with a database table using dataAdapter and datatable component. By performing cut-paste I was getting errors about system trying to update a Deleted row from datagrid. I made changes in the code. while performing paste or cut from the datagrid, I call UpdateDataTable() and AcceptChanges() to the database.     - BULK INSERT and VB.Net I wrote a program that uses the BULK INSERT statement. All goes well and everything gets imported fine but the return results (rows affected) is double what was actually inserted. My application creates a format file (for bulk insert, by itself without bcp) and creates a data file using an imported file from an ibm mainframe. Before using BULK INSERT it took 22 minutes to complete, now it takes < 2 minutes. So, it's definately worth it. But I do have a couple of questions about it before I check it all in and Label it. 1.) Why are the affected rows returned by SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery double what was actually affected? 2.) Since it is bulk inserted, and there is a problem with, let's say, the 213,000th row, do all the rows get rolled back? 3.) When using BCP, it shows how many rows have been inserted, how do they get the # of rows affected? If I used a dataset, I could use the SqlDataAdapter to fire an event for this, but I'm not. I'm just using a SqlCommand object to do my updates and setting the BULK INSERT data and format vars in the sql statement. Any and all help appreciated, thank you...     - memory leak in SqlDataAdapter.Fill method? I have a program that invokes the following block of code every x seconds. The process private bytes keeps increasing after every call. I've try to dispose the SQlDataAdapter in the finally block, but did not work. If I invoke the garbage collector manually GC.Collect in the finally block, there is no more memory leak. What's wrong with the following block of code? Is there a real leak or am I missing something? I've been working on this for few days, but I cannot figure it out.     - ADO.Net Connection Pooling Problem with Oracle Howdy, I recently implemented an ASP.Net application and am having trouble with running out of database connections. I've read many articles on the web concerning pooling, but have yet to find one that really describes in detail how pooling is supposed to behave. My problem is that over time, the number of database sessions in Oracle seem to increase to the point where we start getting the "Maximum number of sessions exceeded". I've already increased the SESSIONS init parameter in Oracle from 150 to 300, but we're coming pretty close to this limit. I've been monitoring the sessions using the V$SESSION view in Oracle and there are sessions with the same connection string (same USERNAME). For instance, one user may have over 100 database sessions. Here's a sample of what my connection strings look like: "Pooling=true;Data Source=mydb;Password=pass;User ID=fred" I believe the default max pool size is 100, so why do I see over 100 database sessions for a particular user, not to mention there can be 200 or more for the whole db? I use a shared component for all database executions (queries or updates). I've triple checked this component and I'm closing the database connections everywhere they're used. Everywhere I close them, it's done in the Finally portion of a Try-Catch block. I was using DataReaders and it wasn't easy to close the connections using a shared component, so I changed everything to use DataSets. This seemed to improve the situation, but it didn't completely solve it. I've talked with Oracle Support and they say this is not a database issue since the database doesn't close the connections. They leave it up to the application. If connections are orphaned, you have to implement what they call the Dead Connection Detector if you want Oracle to clean them up. I did this, but ran into some very serious problems as a result (CPU utilization was hitting 99% after 3 to 4 hours). I don't think Oracle should have to clean up every database connection that is created from ADO.Net, so I'm now going to the root of the problem - the application. I've also done some testing with non-pooled connections. I was seeing multiple Oracle sessions for the loading of one ASP.Net page. I ran the code through the debugger and verified that the db connections were being closed. I was confused at first, but then realized this was because the garbage collector didn't clean things up yet. I added a call to System.GC.Collect and sure enough, no database sessions were left open (in V$SESSION table) after loading the page. It's not feasible to collect the garbage everytime I close a database connection and establishing new connections everytime an SQL statement runs kills performance. Isn't that what connection pooling is for????? Why isn't this working????? For our environment, we're using version 1.1.4322 of the .Net Framework, Microsoft's OracleClient ADO.Net Provider and version 9.2.0.6 of the Oracle database. We're running this on Windows Server 2003 WITHOUT service pack 1, but all of the latest critical patches. I would really appreciate anybody's help in solving this problem.     - PLEASE HELP - UserControl DataBinding flow thru HI, I have a UserControl with a textbox in it. How can i bind the textbox to a datasource, only binding the UserControl, ie what functionality should i add to the UC to "transfer" databinding to nested textbox? I tried some different things, like exposing textbox.Text property and binding datasource to it, creating virtual UC property DataBindings, which would return DataBindings of textBox, but nothing helps so far..     - Constraints Hi, I would like to ad Constraints to a database column, which only can have unique values. The column can be empty only if the table is empty (no records). Im using the syntaxt: pk = new DataColumn[1]; pk[0] = ds.Tables["table"].Columns["ID"]; ds.Tables["table"].Constraints.Add(new UniqueConstraint("ConstrName", pk[0])); ds.Tables["table"].PrimaryKey = pk; The problem is when the datatable is empty.     - Cannot Open Any More Tables I was working on creating a data library to use throughout my applications, when I came across an odd behavior. I encounter â??Cannot Open Any More Tables.â?? After using the OleDBCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method. I have included code that recreates the exception. I cannot recreate this error with the SQLCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method.     - shared access folder problem Hi guys... I have a web app that works pretty good . It was developed with the access database in the virtual directory....now thats its about done, i would like to reference the database from a shared network directory.     - weird ADO issue Hi all, I apologize for posting in this NG if this post is a better fit for some other group, however I am up against the wall here. My program uses free threaded COM. Once in a while (depending on routines I call) I instantiate ADO, use it and release. Everything works fine on XP Professional, and on Windows 2000 (workstation) however, when I run it on Windows 2000 server, in the beginning everything works fine, and then, out of nowhere, I get intermittent failure (0x80010105 HRESULT) from: ADODB::_ConnectionPtr spConn; hr = spConn.CreateInstance( ADODB::CLSID_Connection ); (I use VC++7) Similar behavior I get when I instantiate VBScriprt's RegExp component in the same program. But here I am catching 0xC0000005 error from m_spRegExp.CreateInstance( __uuidof(VBS_REGEX::RegExp) ); Yes, I know... maybe I don't release objects properly, or some other bug in my software... I've tried almost everything there is to try.... the bottom line It WORKS on XP sp2, but not on 2000 server sp4. Please help, I am up against the wall here. Thanks.     - multiple tables in a flat grid What is the best way to create a datasource for a single flat grid that pulls from multiple updateable datatables? I'd like to pull back multiple tables, create relationships between them, then have a grid bind to a 'view' of these tables so that when I update a field in the grid, it updates the datatable in which that field resides. I tried the obvious: DataSet.Tables("TableName").Rows.Count However that returns the original number of rows, and not the number of rows filtered subsequently in my datagrid.     - Schema Collection -> Strongly Typed Dataset I have a bunch of .xsd files some of which inherit from others, such that there are elements that have attributes in one file and also inherts other attributes from another file. These schemas come from an external source (I have no control over them). We plan to store the .xml documents as they come in (using Oracle XML DB), then read them in, validate and manipulate them in Visual Studio (2005 beta due to a bug in 2003 that the schemas abuse). I want to create a strongly typed dataset, so that when I read the document in I can reference it using the tables and columns in the dataset.     - Dataset Merge Question Does anyone know exactly how the MERGE method on the dataset functions? The reason that I am asking is that it does not appear to be doing what I expect, and what the documentation claims will happen (if I am understanding it correctly). Update the state of records in one dataset based on another. In this situation, the second dataset contains information not only about new records, but also changed records and deleted records, and you want your first dataset to reflect all these changes. Copy not only new records and changes, but specify what to do if the datasets do not have the same schemas. My problem is that it will not update changed records. It will only add new records. I have included my code below. If anyone has a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it.     - Multiple DataTables in Dataset Hi, I am returning multiple datatables from a stored procedure into a dataset. It keeps naming the datatables as "Table","Table1","Table2" etc. Is there a way i can change the sproc so that my datatables get created with a name ?     - MS Best Practice - Load subset of a single Row Can someone please tell me the recommended best practice for loading a subset of the columns from a single row of a database table? Users can make fields come and go from the form, so a stored procedure is not an option as I see it. Using a datareader opens a cursor, which seems an inefficient way to get one row, but I do not see an alternative.     - Transactions in ADO.Net 2 strongly-typed datsets. Here's the scenario: I have a custom object that represents a group in our law firm. For each group, there are many members of that group. Now, the group object exposes a property that is a strongly-typed datatable of the member records. The UI programmer will add/delete records from this datatable as the user adjusts the members of the group. Then, the Update method of the group object will not only update it's normal properties (name, description, etc.) but will call the update method of the adapter for the datatable to write the changes to the members. My question as a ADO.Net 2 newbie is this: How to I wrap the group object changes and the changes written by the update in the datatable in the same transaction? I knew how to do this in ADO.Net 1.x, but the properties exposing the insert, update, delete command objects in the datatable are not there. What am I missing? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.     - data access Hi all, I am trying to gather records from different databases into one dataset. I can do the select statements and get the data into the datatables and then into a dataset. The problem is then being able to get the data I need from the dataset so that I can display it for a report. (I am trying to do a select on the dataset tables) My question is, am I going about this in the right manner or am I going down the wrong path. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe. so I got confused, my question is, does this mean that my instance variable s_workemail is NOT thread safe? i.e if user A and user B access my page and modify the value at the same time, will I get wrong results? or will there be 2 variables, 1 on every thread?     - Using Transactions in C# Hi, i have some wired behaviour using c#, ado and sql server. There are two tables on sql server: Order and Orderdetails. (Order_ID is primary key on Table Order and foreign Key on Orderdetails.) I have two c# Classes calles Order and Orderdetails. They contain two Methods for inserting Orders or Orderdetails on Database. (Parameterized with an sql connection an an transaction.) On the main programm a transaction is started an calling Order.Insert(...) Then, i do serveral Orderdetails.Insert(...) before committing the transaction. This works as supposed, but there is one big issue i cant figure out: I start debugging the app and opend query-analyzer. After calling Order.Insert(...)-but not yet committed the transaction - i am able to do a "select * from order where order_id = 1". BUT: After calling Orderdetail.Insert(...)in the code -but not yet committing the transaction- i cant do a "select * from orderdetail where order_id = 1), because Query Analyzer is waiting until the transaction is commited. Why that? I mean it did work for Order.Insert; why not for Orderdetail.Insert??? When i use the command "select * from orderdetail with (readpast) where order_id = 1" it asap returns data. (There are about 1000 Datarows in the Tables; that with order_id = 1 has been already inserted. The isolationlevel is set to IsolationLevel.ReadUncommitted) Can anyone help?     - DeriveParameters and Jet OLEDB Provider Hi I've just discovered that the Jet OLEDB Provider does not support OleDbCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters, to discover the number and type of parameters expected by a Microsoft Access query. I'm a little surprised, as it was always possible to use the ADO Refresh method with this provider to populate a Paramters collection. Is there a reason for this? Is there a workaround? I know that it's an expensive operation which should be avoided anyway, but it's sometimes useful, and I'd like to use the same code against both Access and SQL Server. That exists at System.Data - which leads me to believe that nothing really stops me from setting that isolation level on Oracle.     - Casting IntPtr/Byte etc... Trying to get HP's Biometric API for the .NetCF to work by storing fingerprint data in a DB and then retrieving it. First problem: casting to the right types to store in the DB. Right now I'm casting each fingerprint property to OleDbType.Variant prior to inserting in the DB and then in a stored procedure casting each property to either Int, Binary or smallint before storing it in a table. I get a problem when retrieving though - exceptions on pretty much each data type. The best practices book I have says this is also the most efficient way to return multiple column values from a single row. The requested fields can be changed by users adding/removing fields from the form, so a stored proc will not work - variable number of return values. I tried: Select name, rank into ( :V1, :V2 ) from mytable where keyvalue = :V3 and get ORA-01036. The bound parameters are named to match the sql statement. Submit deleted master rows I took this process and applied it to a rather large, normalized data structure. However, the modified detail row changes would never make it to the database. I stepped through the code and found that after updating the modified master rows (step 3), the related detail rows' RowState would change from Modified to Unchanged. This, of course, keeps the detail rows from being sent to the database. After swapping steps 3 and 4, the database was successfully updated. My questions...why does that happen in the first place? I have a .NET windows application that I'm working on written in C# that retrieves the fileinfo of the directory and then loads all of the images into an image field in the database.
