    - Problem with ODP.NET on Windows 2000 Hi, I wrote a simple application that opens and closes connections to an Oracle DB using the standard ODP.NET API. The ODP version is 2.102.2.20 and the DB version is 9.2.0.7 This application works fine on Windows XP, but when running on Windows 2000 (SP4) it takes about and hour and finally the application hangs on 100% CPU. I monitored the application using perfmon, specifically the CLR Exceptions statistic. It appears that each time I open a connection (this happens with and without connection pooling) a CLR Exception occurs and is caught internally, so I can't analyze it.     - BindingSource, DataSet and multiple tables not syncing I have defined a dataset using the DataSource Configuration Wizard. I dropped 3 tables onto the design surface. It looks like this: Tbl1 Tbl2 Tbl3 PK FK========> PK FK=========>PK Table 1 is a Client, tbl2 is a Person and 3 is an Address. There is only one Person for a Client and only one Address for a Person. When I look at the relations the designer created, it says that for the Client-Person relation, the Person is the parent and the child is the Client. The relation editor will not allow me to change this. I created a bindingsource for the client. I set its datasource property to the dataset and table Client to the DataMember property. I created another bindingsource, PersonBindingSource, and set is datasource to the dataset and the Person table to the DataMember property. Finally I created an Address bindingsource and set its datasource to the dataset and its Address table to the DataMember property. I used a bindingnavigator. When I move from row to row with the navigator, only those controls bound to the client binding source reflect the navigation. The controls bound to either the Person or Address do not.     - AutoIncrement Columns Hi, I'm wondering if it's possible to regenerate the increment id's in an AutoIncrement Column? My situation is this...I have a client application that is recieving a several DataTables from a service. The DataTables contain an auto increment column which is guaranteed to be unique within that table but I need to merge the tables together to create a new table and still have a unique column. Orignally I was taking the first table as a base and then adding new rows to this for the other tables using LoadDataRow since the structure will always be the same. Since the format of each table is the same I'm using LoadDataRow(myRowToAdd). I have tried creating a new AutoIncrementColumn and LoadingDataRow but this doesn't work, I end up with NULLS in the new Column and of course non unique values in the existing. So I guess my question is what is the best way to create this new autoincrement column? I'm hoping I don't have to loop through the datatables that come in because I will be recieving updates to all this data and think this could be quite slow. Any help appreciated.     - Triggering and saving notifications I've decided to add some notification functionality to an existing app that will be used across a small network, but I'm not sure how best to poll for the event or to handle its acknowledgment. For example, I have a "Completed" task that is saved to a tracking history table. I know what employee I want to notify when that "Completed" entry occurs, but how/when to "poll" the database for that entry? The easiest method seems to be to make a check of the entries in the "Event" column at the time the user logs on. It would be great to be able to make a check when a job gets "completed" in the middle of the workday, but I can probably live with the login "polling" (anyone have a better idea on the dynamic check? Perhaps transaction sproc that fires a return value based on ...). But what troubles me most is considering how to later indicate to a user that the event has been retrieved, user notified, and acknowledged. This *seems* to say to add another column to the tracking table to handle acknowledgement of the notification, i.e., a bit "acknowledged" column used in conjunction with the event column to stop the notification from firing.     - Problems with no rows returning from Query and C# I have code as follows if((DataTable)read_union_database("retrieveSSN")).row[0][0] == DBNull.Value { orow[0] = "" } else{ orow[0] = ((Data Table)read_union_database("retrieveSSN")).rows[0][0].ToString(); } I keep getting the error "There is no row at position 0" and when I place debug statements in the code it never goes to the If side of the statement. The read_union_database is just a SQL query that returns back the SSN of a member that matches a certain parameter. So in this case obviously I don't have a match and therefore I don't have a row being returned. What is the proper way in C# to check to see if that returned?     - sqldataadapter, datacolumn rowstate Hello All, I use a dataadapter to fill a datatable from a sql server table. The datatable contains one column ROW_ID which is set as the PrimaryKey. The sql server table contains a single row and no new rows are added between refreshes. I refresh the datatable every 3 minutes using the dataadapter.fill method. The primary key prevents the same record being added but I'm confused as to why the fill method triggers the DataRowChangeEventArgs event with an action of type change and the datarow rowstate is set to modified. ?     - Recordset to DataTable Hi All, I am having the strangest and most frustrating time trying to load a recordset into a data table more than once. For some reason, when I execute the following code, the first messagebox displays a record count of 2 and a second call to it displays a count of 0. Why the inconsistent result. The recordset seems to be open and I even perform a MoveFirst, etc. Nothing works. Should it not consistently return a record count of 2 since I am executing the same code twice. The code is extremly simple, but for some reason, it seems as if the recordset object itself becomes invalid after the .Fill operation is complete. The only way I can find this is to perform my BuildDataSource (real world scenario involves connecting to a database, etc.) function which simply creates and returns an ADODB recordset. Any idea or help. Note: I reference the ADODB 2.7 InterOp library installed with VS 2005. Are there any specifications as to what the cursorlocation, cursor type, or connection open parameters. But how would you get video out of a room, unless you had actual physical access in order to plant a device for pickup? We're not talking about looking in from afar, but an actual device within the room. You could either drill through the wall and shove a pickup through; or you could supply a trojan device with a hidden pickup inside; but most likely, you would have to physically break into your target room to plant a camera. That's not an infeasible option; all it means is having your target(s) watched to make sure they're not in the vicinity, then you negotiate any locks on the property and find a suitable receptacle for your device. The next question is how they defeat the usual methods of counter- surveillance. We had private detectives carry out a "sweep" of every room and the telephone line. They found nothing. That indicates at least four possibilities that I can think of; (this is all guesswork BTW, and probably fanciful guesswork at that!) 1) no bugs (pull the other one) 2) radio-transmitting devices which can be controlled from an external source, ie you can instruct them to switch off when you detect a counter-surveillance sweep taking place 3) hard-wired devices; probe microphones or whatever they're called, things you poke through the wall 4) passive surveillance devices; so you bounce laser or radio waves off a suitable reflecting surface (again, sounds far-fetched but such things may apparently exist). 5) there is a fifth possibility, that the PI's didn't detect an actual transmitting device; there are technologies specifically designed to avoid detection, eg frequency hopping and suchlike. But how much sophistication could you build in to a device which would have to be small enough to be physically concealable? I guess the real question is to find out who is ultimately behind these "goings on".     - Security ideas for n-tier? We are working on a project where we are converting our client server application to a n-tier model to make it more scalable. The question I have here for the group is to see if I can get some ideas on how the security should be implemented for this kind of architecture. I am new to this n-tier world so I am looking for some guidance. Just to give you an idea, basically the plan is to split the existing thick client into three layers, a thin client (C# using .net), a middle tier consisting of business logic(C#. net) and SQL Server as the database. In addition to this we will have some web services which in turn will talk to the application server and then to the database. The web services will be written so that in the near future a web portal will be created which will use the web services to write and read data from the database. So basically we are anticipating data from the thin client which will primarily be the Customer Support representatives and data from end users from the web. My question is under this scenario what is the normal and standard practice for authentication? What methodology should be used for authenticating users to the thin client? Should each user be authenticated using the windows authentication or should that be custom security. How should the users coming from the web be authenticated. Once the user is logged on through thin client do we need any security when we do remoting to the business layer. How should the security at the database be implemented, we would like to audit all the changes on a user name basis. I have been reading quite a bit on security but I am still confused what approach would be the best under the above scenario. Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated. If there is any white paper or website, or book that might help please feel free to suggest we are in a time crunch to get this project completed.     - DefaultView.RowFilter Hello all, I'm having a performance problem using the DataTable.DefaultView.RowFilter. When setting the filter to MyField = "Something" this takes about 12 seconds (this isn't the issue). Next if I change the filter to MyField In ('SomethingElse') it takes about 1 second (still not the issue), Next I set the filter to "". This takes about 5 seconds (still not the issue). Finally if I set the filter back to MyField = "Something" or MyField In ('SomethingElse') it takes like 30-45 seconds. This is the issue. My DataTable is bound to a single control but I remove the binding prior to changing the RowFilter and it doesn't make a difference. In a test app the 1st filter takes 12 seconds, the 2nd filter takes 468 ms, no filter takes 6 seconds and back to the 1st takes 453 ms. I cannot find a way to debug what it's doing in my actual app. I tried stepping into RowFilter = "....." but nothing happens (thought maybe there was an event I subscribed to and forgot) and as far as I can tell there are no other controls bound to this DataTable.     - Clear unchanged rows in a data table I have a unique situation and wondering if there's a different way of doing it. I have a strongly typed dataset for a disconnected environment. This dataset runs on a service so I want to clear the rows every now and then to keep memory usage to a minimum. But if dataset can't contact for the database for some reason, I want to be able to hold the records (because the service will still continue to collect data) and upload them later.     - SqlDataSource with multiple data tables I'm attempting to work with SqlDataSource to pull values from a database and populate a form, which by itself is no problem. However, I'm trying to visualize how to also iterate through values on a joined table. My situation is that there is a form representing a Rule filled out mostly from values contained in one table, but that form also contains a ListBox that allows multiple selection which represents the locations this rule applies to. The rule can be applied to any, all or zero locations. I'd like to set this up such that when a Rule is retrieved, the Locations are retrieved in the same query (I know I can accomplish this with 2 separate SqlDataSources), and all values are populated at once. The problem I have is that a JOIN seems to just repeat the form data across all rows, when I really only need the Location ID. If I execute two SELECT statements within a single SqlDataSource without any relationships defined with the query, can I access both the returned tables and create those relationships in the code? I don't need the SqlDataSource's INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE commands for this function, as the work required for those is a bit more than can be handled automatically. But I would like to get this part working with minimal trips to the database, since it just seems unnecessary to execute these two queries independently. What is the best option for doing this? Revert back to DataSet's ability to store and retrieve multiple tables and the ability to create DataRelations? Thanks very much for your time.     - VB Executable Finding Access Database When Shipped I've seen several posts in the archives regarding making your VB .NET application have a relative path connection string to an Access DB, but do not see a definite resolution to the matter. Here's what I'm trying to resolve: My VB 2003 .NET application connects and works just fine with an Access database located at c:\data.mdb. Now, I use a wizard for making an installer for my application and it places the data.mdb file in the installation directory without any problems. However, I'm always going to have a runtime error unless the data.mdb file is at c:\. I have to believe this issue has come up before and a pro can easily shed some light on how I can perhaps use a relative path in my connection string rather than an absolute. Now, I'm starting a clean Web site project but am having trouble right off again. I'm trying to create a new database using MS SQL Server 2005. I entered localhost as the Server name, selected Use Windows Authentication, and entered a new name for my database. When I click OK, I get the following error: Microsoft Visual Studio An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) As far as I know, localhost does not indicate a remote connection. I eventually connected to a database previously with SQL Express Edition, so I'm guessing this might have to do with my SQL configuration. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 on a new C#/ASP.NET project. I'm running Windows XP Professional w/SP2. Sorry, but virtually every suggestion I get will probably need to include instructions on how to do--I'm quite new to this. I would like to share this information with the MS dev community. We had this issue of SQL Server performing very poorly while running our application. My colleague found out that connection leak was happening whenever the .NET code executed transactions. So I created a small console program that does a transaction like the following. So as we have a data layer that doesn't expose the underlying connection, we had to define a variable as SqlConnection and hold onto the reference to the connection from the transaction and the close it after commit. I hope I explained this issue well, but this never happened in .NET Framework 1.1. We converted our code from 1.1 to 2.0, and didn't change a thing, but this issue came out.     - Adding new object to Typed Data Set and return the primary key Hi, I have started using Typed Data Sets with VS2005 and so far so good, however I am having a problem with adding a row to a data table and returning the new Primary Key value. My data set has been auto generated from a DB table and has an auto generated Primary Key for the ID field. I create the row using ProjectsDataTable.NewProjectsRow() However the code that returns this Project Row does not persist the data table as it is a method on my singleton object. Once the new row has been populated with data I call an update method on the singleton which then creates a new table adapter. My problem is how to add this orphaned row to the database and return the Primary Key that the database creates for it. I have tried many of the different methods that are created by default in the TypedDataSet however so far the only one that works is the TableAdapter.Insert() method and this does not return the primary key. Method 1: DataAdapter.Update(myProjectRow) // fails I guess because the row has no connected DataTable Method 2: newDataTable = DataAdapter.GetData(); // returns eg a data table containing 4 rows. newDataTable.ImportRow(myRow); // data table still contains 4 rows no error generated. DataAdapter.Update(newDataTable); // does nothing as there is nothing to update Please does anyone have any insight into this or do i have to go back to the good old way of manually executing the SQL or dumping my data singleton and manually creating and persisting the data table for the form that creates the new project ? I have a DataSet with two tables in it, with a relation between them.
I fill the tables with records programmatically with these commands:
System.Data.DataRow newRow = myTable.NewRow();
//give values to each column in the row
myTable.Rows.Add(newRow);
I want to create a DataGridView that is bounded to this dataset and
show in each row columns from both tables.
But when I set the DataSource of the DataViewGrid to the DataSet, I
can only pick one table from the DataSet as the DataMember. And then I
can only choose columns from that specific table.
I tried setting the relation as the DataMember - but it seems the
relations only has columns from one of that tables and I couldn't find
how to change that.

Is there a way to "join" the columns of the two tables into one
DataGridView?
