    - Which alternative acheives best performance? VB.NET/SQL Server Using datareader to create objects and populate collections (no datasets involved) Part of my object model looks like this (with corresponding tables in the database with PrimaryKey/ForeignKey relationships) Organisation contains Projects contains Contacts contains Allowances contains Adjustments contains Adjustment Costs Which of the following will provide better performance in terms of downloading data? Read all Projects belonging to the Organisation, then loop through each Project and read all Contracts belonging to the Project,then loop through each Contract and read all allowances belonging to the Contract etc. OR Amend my stored procedures to include multiple joins (up to 6 levels deep) so that I read all Projects belong to the Organisation, then read all Contracts belonging to the Organisation, then read all Allowance belonging to the Organisation etc. The first method means I can create the correct heirarchy as data is read but involves many more calls to server and corresponding open/closing of the reader. The second method involves less (but more complex) calls.     - sql server vs msde, how to tell How do I tell if someone is running sql server or msde? the reason I need to know this has to do with the connection strings. When I try to connect to sql server I connect with the name of the server easily with Data Source=mysqlserver. If I want to connect to an msde instance I have to do Data Source=(local)\NETSDK. The problem obvoiusly is that neither works with the other connection string.     - Navigating DataGrids: How to access information in Child Tables I am using a Windows Forms DataGrid to display a DataSet with two tables using a parent / child relationship. I set this up with the following code: parentColumn = ds.Tables["Parent"].Columns["ID"]; childColumn = ds.Tables["Child"].Columns["ID"]; dr = new DataRelation("RelParentChild",parentColumn, childColumn); ds.Relations.Add(dr); grid.SetDataBinding( ds, "Parent" ); * I need to access information from the Child Table when the user double-clicks it. gridWIP.CurrentRowIndex stores the value of the Parent Table and does not change while the Child Table is being displayed. Furthermore, this.BindingContext[ dsWIP, "Child" ] appears to be useless: None of the events fire and the Current & Position values never change. I can probably access the information I need using the MouseDown event & the HitTest, but I need to be able to determine which Table the DataGrid is showing at the time, and I'm not sure how to do that either. Is there anyway to programtically generate a schema from a string of valid xml, then apply said schema to the XmlDataDocument's dataset?     - ADODB Hi, In VB6 when using DAO e.t.c, it was often required to call the function DBEngine.Idle, otherwise MS Access took ages to release record locks and basically made concurrent use impossible. Will I suffer the same problems with ADODB in VB.NET? if so is there a correct method to also implement this function. or does good old ADODB do all this for me? Thought I'd enquire as I've found no reference to this and didn't want to be caught out in the later stages of my project.. Another issue I have is that when I save a new record to a database and immediatley populate a listbox, I don't get the new record, it's as if there is a 1 second delay before the data is visible, so I miss it but get the new record if I attempt to populate the listbox again; is this some form of cache issue that I can flush programically. Is there any other advice for potential problems I might get? Below is an example of the coding standard I'm using, so it is made clear how I'm accessing data, as there appears to many ways to achieve the same result.     - updating from one data source to another A common scenario I run into is to grab data from one data source and place it in a dataset, modify the data, and then insert the data into another datasource. The problem is that when I use the SqlDataAdapter's update command it doesn't work because the Row versions are all set to Unchanged or Modified and not New so the insert commands never get run. I can't find away to do this/ I have trawled the net and have found a few people trying to do the same thing but no solution. The only solution given was to pass the array as a delimited string, but this is no good for my purposes as the array could get quite large.     - Navision C5 and ASP.NET (ODBC) Hi I'm developing a hotel booking system, an ASP.NET frontend to C5 3.0. I'm having difficulties connecting to C5 through ODBC. I'm using .NET Framework v1.1 and therefore the System.Data.Odbc Namespace. I'm using the C5ODBC driver for C5 3.0 and have tested it succesfull for for instance Microsoft Excel. When the I call the Open() method on the OdbcConnection the application "stalls" , that is the browser keeps on loading and loading. The data source is a System DSN using the C5ODBC driver. Data sourse settings: Datafile: c:\program files\microsoft navision\c5\c5data.dat Additional Parameters: c:\program files\microsoft navision\c5\ .. and the rest is by default Could have something to with the authorization-schema in .NET (forms, windows, etc.)? Or could it be something to do with my config files?: web.config, machine.config. I have not changede any of them. Is it even know to be possible to connect to C5 from ASP.NET? If the above approach is incorrect or there exists a better way please advice.     - Differnt behavior of ADO.Net Relation.Nested under 1.1 I have an example from MSDN that seems to have worked under 1.0. It does not under 1.1.     - naming a typed dataset table during fill I have a typed dataset with three tables. The names are "SaleCustTable", "SaleInvTable", and "CompanyDetail". when the dataset is filled ie: da.fill(ds) should the table be named with the above names or, should you use . and then the table name or just name them something else? When I used the da.fill(ds.SaleInvTable), I had an error "Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or a foriegn key constraints" Trying da.fill(ds,"SaleInvTable") returned the same error. Trying da.fill(ds,"inv") returned no error and it did have data. I would assume, because off the errors, the first two methods are not the way to go???     - ADO Library Corruption Is there any way to find out whether the ADO.Net library installed on the Deployment PC is working fine. I am developing a workflow application using Exchange server. I have defined some custom properties to folder in exchange WSS. I am able to access them using exchange explorer. But when i try to access the same value using ADO.net functions (e.g. WorkflowSession.Fields) it returns no value. The same functions are working fine on the developemnt PC.     - Strange timeout problem... I'm working on an ASP.NET website and a strange problem occurs. I execute a stored procedure that gets data out of 2 SQL Server databases. When the stored procedure is executed via the webpage, it times out (time after time). However, once I execute the stored procedure manually in Query analyzer, I get the correct results. After the manual execute, the page performs normally as well. I have another (similar) website in which I follow the exact same logic, and over there I don't have that problem.     - locking headers in the Datagrid Is it possible to have the scroll bar appear beneath the headers, so they stay in view while scrolling down a large list of data in the datagrid control? you could have two grids and split and over lap them via a frame, but for huge tables that would not be a feasible option... i'd also like the chance to have this turned while using the paging and if the second page has a field that's longer that any in the first page, the header's fall out of width with each other when using frames. thanks.     - SQL Connections .Net SqlClient Data Provider When using the trace log set to audit login information when debugging connections I observed that my connection through asp.net event class audit logout doesnt happen as soon as I call .close or even .dispose. It happens after several minutes I am supposing when the connection times out. Why? Why is the connection not being closed. I'm just now testing it with the Northwind database. One of the tables is named "Order Details". I have to remove the space or replace it with an underscore for the class names.     - Saving Byte arrays via OleDb Hi, I am doing some crytpo stuff, and I want to store my key, IV and encrypted values (These are all generated as byte arrays) in a database table via a stored procedure and the OleDB namespace classes. I have tried sending them as binary and varbinary but I always get the same error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I have confirmed the connection is working, so I don't really know where to go from here. If somebody has a suggestion of how I could get this to work I would really appreciate the help.     - Foreign Key violation when Updating ?? Hi. I have a weird problem when I update my database. I am using SQL Server 2000. In my VB.NET application I used Web Services for insert, update, delete. I have a relation between 2 tables in my database. I use dataset to transport data to and from the server. I use native sqlclient provider. I have .NET Framework 1.1 I use reflexion to create objects: SqlDataAdapter, SqlCommand. All this using interfaces like IDBDataAdapter, IDBConnection etc .... Let me explain the case a bit clearer. ** First test on Update in my VB.NET application I retrieve a record from the database and I edit a foreign key field with a value does not exist in the related table. Normally it should throw an Exception, but as incredible as it is, it updates the database thus violating the database constraint. I checked in my database and yes there it is. Ok I go in Enterprise Manager and put back a correct value. Still from Enterprise manager I tried again to put a wrong value in that field and Enterprise Manager rejects the change. That was expected. ** Second test on the same database using a VB 6.0 application From VB. 6.0 the same test fails and I get message Violation of Foreign key .... Ok that normal. ** Third test on INSERT in VB.NET application If I try to insert a record with a wrong value in the foreign key field, I do get an Exception this time. It seems it's just when I do an UPDATE that it bypasses the database constraint. Whats the problem ? Is there a problem with the DataAdapter or the SQLCommand ?? I am getting crazy with this. The error i receive is: Cannot change readonly property for the expression column The only way to avoid this, is to delete the SELECT statement added by the DataAdapter wizard to the UpdateCommand SQL string. I have two DataTables with the same key, in the same DataSet, and connected by this key. I would like to display in a DataGrid columns from the two DataTables side by side (like a SQL join). eg, columns from both DataTables in one same row in one DataGrid. Are there any samples for a true C/S app (preferably VB, but C# is welcomed)
with a middle tier using datasets/datatables similar to the the Fitch/Maher
sample w/VB6? The only thing i can find on windowsforms.com & MSDN is
TaskVision, which is overly complicated for my needs(dont need to expose
data via web services).

I have adopted the "MS Building Blocks" data access class, but it's only
been used in ASP.Net samples, and would like to continue using it in the
BLL. Is this possible?
