    - Master-Detail records I wrote an application in .NET 2003, everything worked fine for several weeks. This application has several text boxes and a detail grid. I put navigation buttons on the form to move to the next record, which will also change the data in the grid. I didn't make any changes to the application, but all of a sudden, the detail grid quit updating with changes to the position of the master. If I just did it wrong in the first place and it should have never worked, then that's the way it is, but I would like to know what I did wrong, and maybe some ideas of why it would all of a sudden decide to stop working.     - Combining multiple datatables on a unique ID Hi, Using VB .NET I want to combine app 100 different ADO.NET datatables, each with app 50,000 records which have been populated from SQL. They share a common ID, and I would like to group by this ID and sum up the other 4 columns to give me one master table. I understand how to populate the datatables but don't know what the best/fastest way to query across different datatables is.     - Data Adapter Problem? The following is an issue using ado.net in an asp.net page using SQL Server.... I have a Statement that when executed from my asp.net dataadapter takes about 24,000 reads according to SQL Profiler. I think the read count is accurate as it grids a long time. The same statement when executed from Query analyzer takes only 116 reads and it executes quickly. Why the Difference? Same table, same server.     - bound comboboxes I have three comboboxes on the form. When the record is displayed, all the three combo boxes are blank. If I select a value in the first combo box, and click save, the first value in the other combo box is displayed automatically. I am trying in VB 2003 to call an Oracle 9i stored procedure with parameters but I cannot seem to get past the compiler.     - Wierd Occurrance I have an intermittant problem that occurs a couple of times a week in a handful of places in the code (the same places at different times). The error is 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. After much research (it's not my code), I've found that it is occuring when a datareader is being used after being returned from a another method that queries an Oracle database. The first thing the calling code does is check to see if the returned datareader is closed. When this statement executes the datareader object does not exist. Here is an example of the calling code: oDatabase = New ICPT.clsDatabase(oSession.ApplicationConnectionString, oSession.DatabaseType) strSQL = "SELECT * FROM TransactionCodes" rdrTranCode = oDatabase.GetDataReader(strSQL) 'verify the datareader is open and contains a record If rdrTranCode.IsClosed = False Then '' bomb on this line 'do something End If I've checked the application log files and there is no indication that the GetDataReader() method is trapping and logging an error. Any of you guys see a problem with this code? It looks as if a database connection and subsequent query are being done successfully (nothing in error logs), but when the datareader is returned the reference to the datareader is lost. I can tell you that most of the things this application does involve at least a few calls to GetDataReader(), and sometimes there are quite a few calls to perform a certain function.     - Performance Problems with filtering in Dataview Hi all! I would really appreciate getting some help on the following problem: I use a cached dataview as a source for my datagrid. The user selects items from controls and based on the selections a filter is applied on the dataview and the datagrid re-databinded. Now the problem: when I test the application on the server it works extremely fast, the filtering processes within 2 to 3 seconds on a datatable with 4000 rows! When I try to access the same site on the server from a client-Computer in the business network the filtering takes about 40 to 60 seconds!!! Does anyone have a clue how to explain these extreme performance differences?     - SPs, sqlCommand and Terminal Services Hi all, I just ran into something very, very strange.. I have this application which fires of a series of SQL Scripts using the sqlCommand Object. One of the statements executes the procedure "sp_addMergePublication" on the server. If I do this on a local machine, everything works fine. But if I run my application on a server using Terminal Services then the application will Halt on that statement saying that "A severe error has occured." and that any changes should be discharged. Note. This happens ONLY when I run the application remote and it is not an error bound to a specific machine. I can recreate the problem on any given server.     - Losing records in a transaction I'm currently using .NET 1.0 and MS .NET provider for Oracle to connect to my Oracle9i R2(9.2.0.5) database. Off late I have been getting database locks and subsequent slowness in the application. My DBA tracks down the holding statements and kills the session. Now, if the script used in InsertTb1() happens to be the statement of the assocated session that was killed, I expect Oracle to throw an exception, which inturn should be caught in the catch block and the whole transaction shoud be rolled back. But, it looks like I do not get an exception, due to which the code proceeds to fire the subsequent statements (InsertTb2(), UpdateTb3()) and I end up with incomplete records in the database. I have had an instance before, where Oracle database was throwing a 'No Data found' exception, but the exception never bubbled to my code i.e. The .NET provider ignored the excepton. But in some situations such as database backup process, I got timeout error and my program will retry to inject until success.     - DataSet and GC.SuppressFinalize We are having issues with DataSet and related objects. They are staying in the memory for too long. When we started investigating the problem, windows debugger (windbg) showed that they are in the finalization queue. This surprised us as we were not aware that they have finalizers defined. The .net framework code (mentioned in this email) is reverse engineered by Anarkino tool. Even though DataSet does not define a finalizer, it derives from MarshalByValueComponent (MBVC) which does implement finalizer. In addition, the DataSet does not define a Finalize method but the base class does. However the base class has only proteted Finalize method. This means only derived classes can call this method. The constructor of DataSet makes GC.SuppressFinalize(this) call. Thinking that we have to call Dispose method, we checked for Dispose method implementation on DataSet. Well, it is not there. But MBVC has it. To my surprise, it is making GC.SuppressFinalize(this) again in the MBVC's Dispose method. This means these objects will never be finalized (is this right?) That is 2 times we saw the GC.SuppressFinalize between DataSet and MBVC implementations. Can any one explain why the supress call is required when we are not using any typed datasets? Is there an elegant way to make them disappear faster (other than using ReRegisterForFinalize method)? This problem applies all classes the derive from MBVC. Thanks. Raghu/..     - Efficient Database Paging Tests I have been trying to determine the fastest way to implement database paging for an Access database with an ASP.NET front-end. I have a difficult database because the user can change the sorting and the fields are not unique, which excludes the "Select TOP" approach. Also the database has about 60,000 records and is growing. The user has to always have current data which excludes caching. I've tried the following approaches: 1. Using an OleDBDataAdapter to fill a datatable and then displaying the paged records from the table. 2. Using an OleDBDataAdapter to partially fill a dataset with the paged records and then running a second command to retrieve to the total records. 3. Looping through an OleDBDataReader until I get to the paged records and a second command to retrieve to the total records. 4. Looping through an OleDBDataReader to get the paged records and then completing the loop to count the total records. All 4 methods return the current total records which I need to set up my paging menu. Approach #1 if by far the slowest (up to 4 times slower) in every scenario. Approach #2 is the fastest most of the time. The Microsoft documentation warns that this approach is inefficient, but I have not found this to be the case. The only case where this approach faults is when the query's WHERE clause is very complicated. However, when there is no WHERE statement or ORDER BY and the page is near the start of the records then this approach is about 4 times faster than the next fastest. Approach #3 is slightly slower than #2 and also faults when the WHERE statement is complex. Approach #4 is also only slightly slower than #2, and it is not slowed down by a complex WHERE statement.     - Selecting a Row in a DataTable Hi I'm very new to this so forgive me if I've made very amateur mistakes. I am writing a web page for work so that items in a database can be queried and then amended if required. I've written a function which returns a DataSet. I call this function from a sub procedure and assign the returned DataSet to a new dataset object (dsTable) with page level scope (dim at top of page). I then bind this data to a DataGrid control. All of this works fine. I then want to enter the row number of an item in the DataGrid and assign a new value to a column of the selected row. I'm doing this very simply by adding a text box for the user to enter the row number then to click a button to apply the changes. The button event calls the Preview sub and passes the row number. I always understood that, with SQL Server, a transaction could only cover one database, regardless of whether the transaction was done in a stored procedure or ADO ('classic ADO' or ADO.Net). But when I started reading in detail it got vague. For example, people were talking about data _sources_ instead of databases. So I did some testing and I can do a transaction in either SQL or ADO that successfully commits or rolls back updates to two databases.     - Timeout on Connection Pool I'm getting the following error message in an ASP.NET application: Time Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. I've read several KB articles on this and examined the server through the performance monitor while this error was occurring. SqlClient: _global_ Current # connection pools: 6 SqlClient: _global_ Current # pooled & nonpooled connections: 14 SqlClient: _global_ Current # pooled connections: 14 We do have six different apps running each with its own connection string. The connection strings contain only the server, database uid and pwd keywords. So I think I understand the Current # connection pools. What I do not understand is how I'm running out of connections when there is only 14 being used/pooled when the default is 100? What am I missing here? Also, as a side note, does anyone know what the "SqlClient: Total # failed commands" represents? This number was in the thousands on the performance monitor but I cannot see anything in our log file.     - Problem installing MSDE 2000 Hi, I've tried to install MSDE 2000 but without success. At first i got an error message about missing SAPWD. After i got some guidance (thanks to Peter) I defined a new administrator account under the name "NetSDK" , and add it a password (my previous account did not contain a password). Then i run from the command line the following command : SETUP.EXE INSTANCENAME="NetSDK" SAPWD="myPassword" . At first it seemed like I'm on the right way since I passed the first step which at the beginning required the SAPWD, but then a small window of "configures Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine ... " opened and a time remaining clock start count toward 0. When it gets to 4 seconds remaining it stucks, reinstall everything and aborted the installation. I have no id what's the reason for that but i tried several times and i got the same unwanted result each time. If anyone knows the reason or has any idea for solving this matter I will be grateful. The database is on a windows 2003 machine and the ado.net code (web services) are on another winsdows 2003 machine in the same domain.     - OleDbType for SQL Server Text? I have a column in a SQL Server 2000 table that is of type Text. That is so I can put an unlimited-size string inside that column. I am using the OleDb connector to put data in there, my pseudo code looks ike this: "@myparamname" , OleDbType.LongVarChar , 819200 , ParameterDirection.Input But text seems to be truncated after about 1000 characters.     - concurrencymanager refresh slow on first record I have the following situation. I have a datagrid bound to an arraylist. Initially, the arraylist is empty. When the user adds an item, the item is added to the arraylist and then the datagrid is updated by getting the currencymanager and calling its refresh method. For reasons I won't go into here, at this point in time the datagrid is simply for display purposes. The problem is, there is a second or two delay from when the refresh method is called and it returns but only on the first record. After the first record is put into the arraylist, any subsequent additions to the arraylist and calls to the currencymanager refresh method are almost instantaneous.     - Speed problems when accessing large MS Access database I?m doing some work on a project which involves accessing a large= Access database (about 850Mb) The problem is when I?m doing an update/insert into the database= the oleDbCommand=2EexecuteNonQuery() method seems to return before= Access has committed the change ? This means that a display I= have on screen which reads back what has just been ?inserted?= doesn?t work correctly=2E At first the problem was only intermittent but as the database= has grown it seems to happen all the time=2E It does work okay if= I step through the program in Visual Studio (thus introducing an= artificial delay)=2E Does anyone know a way around this?     - Oracle Connectivity/Windows Service We have a windows service written in VB.NET. This service is used to trigger applications. The functionality of the service can be briefly explained as 1. The Service accesses the Oracle database. 2. Checks the status of certain table entries. 3. Depending on the table entries processes are triggered. 4. The Service is a perpeterating one with a periodicity of 2 minutes. Issue: 1. The service is installed and is started. It is functioning as expected. Now the Database is brought down (say for backup) and is brought up again. When the Database is brought down the service is not able to access the database which is expected. Now when the database is brought up the service still persists with the error. ERROR from the service: -------------------------------- ERROR MESSAGE : ORA-01034: ORACLE not available ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory -------------------------------- A manual restart of the service is required to make the service functional again. Software Details ------- Oracle Version : Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition, Release 9.2.0.4.0 .NET Framework: Microsoft .NET 2003, v1.1.4322 ------ The service works well on Windows 2003 server but this issue comes in Windows 2000 server SP4. PROCEDURE dal_get_clob_data ( i_dal_string IN VARCHAR2, io_dal_clob IN OUT CLOB );

An exception threw when I tried to use IN OUT CLOB inspite of the usual work around I did.
When it is IN CLOB or OUT CLOB it worked fine but not in case of INOUT CLOB.
Is there anyway to do with this? I am using MDAC 2.7
