 - Example Search Form Required Hi, I have a table named "Person" in a MSDE (2000) database, and am building a search form comprising of search fields on the top section (forename, surname, telephonenumber, etc) which all correspond to columns to search in the database. I'm relatively new to ADO.net and haven't the foggiest about where to start, and need a good example to take apart and learn relatively quickly. Does anyone have code or know of a good place to look? I've checked out MSDN and the free vb code sites, but no-one has a flexible search form that I could reuse. Any ideas?  - Revisiting the issue of "Filling the dataset with a table with same name as in another class" My original post asked the question: what happens when you declare a datatable with the same name in Class1 as you used in Class2? As Miha pointed out, "DataSet won't be gc-ed until you drop all references to it .. while you have at least one living reference DataSet instance will be there." And Kevin Yu answered that, "If you still hold some reference to the object, you have to fill the DataTable with other names, because the original table is still in it." Excellent advice and duly noted. Here's the issue however. I fill the DS with a dtSupply table in lets say Class1. I clear this table out of the DataSet in Class2 before filling the DataSet with a table with the the same dtSupply name as I used in Class1. The schema for these two tables differs ... but the schema for the Class1 table stays in the DataSet ALSO! So while I can populate a table in Class2 with different data for the same table, the table SCHEMA itself remains in the DataSet despite being cleared from the DataSet. From a practical standpoint, this is a non-issue with what I am currently working on, as it is easy enough to simply use a different name for the tables.  - Opening a backend database from two different applications I have a front end database application in MS Access 2000, which for purposes of discussion has an administrative part and a user part. I recently decided to experiment with trying to move the user part of the front-end, which services about 70 people to a .net application. I've implemented both a form and web version. My intent for the time being is to leave the administrative part which is more involved in MS Access which is used by only a couple of people. The problem I'm running into is that multiple instances of each application (.net or MS Access) can access the backend database using individual connections as long as only that application is used, however if either application tries to open the backend database while the other application has an open connection it will complain about the backend being locked (or file already in use). Does anybody understand why the files would only be locked files when accessed by different applications? Have I encountered a limitation with MS Access or is there a setting or work around that would allow me to use both front-end applications simultaneously?  - Solid ODBC Connection thru XML Web Service I'm testing a SOLID connection using the ODBC .Net Provider, from a Windows Application i put two buttons, Local and Web Service.  - DataSet DataTable Question I have a winform with a text field in it. I would like to be able to save the value in the text field to a XML file so that the next time I open the Winform I can get the value from the XML file and populate my field. I am guessing as to exactly what to do but what I have done is as follows: I created a dataset in my project by right clicking on the project and selecting add, new dataset. I called it SaveParams01.XSD. There I added an element, called it CompanyName and called it a string. I put a button on my form where my intention is to get the value in a textbox on the form called TextBox1 and then write that value out to and XML file Called SaveParam.XML. I know how to get the value from the text box and how to write the dataset to an xml file. The code for doing so I list below. But I do not know how to do the rest. Do I need to create a table and somehow associate it with the dataset? Either to the dataset or to the datatable associated with the dataset I need to add a row I suppose and assign the value from TextBox1.text to it, but even after looking at the books I do not know how to write the code to actually do this.  - Help with Index is out of the bounds of the array issue. Hi There, I have been batleing with this now that I'm at the end of my rop here. What I'm doing here is this; 1 - retrieving some data from the database with a data reader (with a search criteria) 2 - Filling a listbox with the data retrieved with the data reader 3 - draging items out of the listbox and dropping them into a text box (simple names) The error I'm getting is on the mouse down event.  - Naming the Tables in the DataSet returned by stored procedure Greetings I have a SQL Server stored procedure that performs several queries and therefore creates several "result sets". Wiring it up via ADO.NET I get a DataSet with a number of items in the Tables collection. This is exactly what I want, but I'd like to assign names to these "result sets" in the stored procedure so that I don't have to access these Tables by index number in the code.  - ADO.Net locking rows on read I have a VB .Net COM+ component running a stored procedure on a SQL Server 2000 DB. If the stored procedure is executed within Query Analyser it takes in the order of three seconds to complete, however when accessed from my component it hits a 5 minute timeout when retrieving the rows (in the order of 30,000 rows). Further investigation points the finger at ADO .NET locking/unlocking each row of data its returning (which Query Analyser isnâ??t doing).  - I need advice on disconnected clients Hi all I want to develop a client which only connects to a server in order to synchronize data. The idea is that the user will see a smaller view of the whole database (only items relevant to themself) and may then add new items, update, delete, etc. Eventually connecting to a middle tier which checks their changes and sync's with the main database. I don't want the user to be online and have to "check out" items first, they should just be able to edit them immediately and then go through some kind of reconciliation process. Is ADO .NET the technology to use? Can I enforce some minor business constraints on the client using ADO .NET? Does ADO .NET have a "prohibit" for a delete rule, I see cascade etc but no prohibit? Does anyone know of any good resources I can look at? Articles, components, etc?  - Full DataTime field not returned in DataSet Hi, I am filling a DataSet with a SQL command the selects certain columns from a table. One of the columns is a DataTime in SQL with a precision of 8. In the SQL Server database, the complete datatime structure is filled including hours, minutes and seconds. The problem is when I fill the dataset, the DateTime column's value is short datetime (i.e. no hours, mins, secs - only month, day , year) .  - Parameter Error I am writing a VB program, and on one particular form, I want to update a database based on a calculation, and the user inputting a number in a combo box on a form. In my table, the field names are name, 1-17, and total. I want to write a statement something like: drw2("1") = xx but I want the 1 to be cboChoice.Text, but I do not know how to format the command. Please help.  - "Internal Error, not fully constructed" error Hello, I am having a problem connecting to SQL server from Visual Studio.NET. When making a data connection, in the "Data Link Properties" window I add the name of the server, my username and password and I select my database from the drop-down list. I click on "Test Connection" and it says "Test Connection succeeded". Good! I click "OK" and get the SQL Server Login window. I enter my username and password. Then when I click OK I get a message box saying: "Internal error, not fully constructed". I am running Visual Studio.Net Professional on Windows XP Home Edition. Any clues very much appreciated.  - identities and dataset... Hi all... got a quick question. I read in XML to a application dataset variable. since i dont have access to SQL server i decided to avoid Access and go strait to XML. Problem i'm having is that when adding a new row i get a constraint issue.  - Do TableStyles and DataView conflict?? Using design i created several tablestyles for a datagrid whose source was originally set to DataSet. Later i decided to put in a dataView instead as the source, but now the designer does not allow for selecting among different tableMappings as long as the DataView is the Source (the original ones are still there).  - SQL Desktop Engine and ADO.NET question Hello, I recently installed MSDE and the .NET QuickStart tutorials. I'm trying to write an app that uses the Northwinds database installed on my local host. As I understand it, I should be able to drag the database from the Server Explorer to my form. Is this incorrect? I've also tried dragging the SqldataAdapter object from the tool box to my form and opening a connection that way, but the wizard is never able to find the database. I'm using the SQL OLEDB provider. There is a foreign key from detail to header so that for each header there can be many details. I have created a corresponding (strongly typed) dataset, with the two tables and the relationship. (To be perfectly clear: one dataset containing two tables) Now, due to programmatic and performance reasons, I would like to populate BOTH the tables in the dataset with a SINGLE sql select statement (containing a join and further conditions). That is, I would like to populate both tables using a single select statement similar to this: SELECT Header.*, Detail.* FROM Header INNER JOIN Detail ON Header.ID = Detail.ID WHERE (Detail.Foo > 52) Is this possible using ADO.NET (or DAL for that matter)?  - Find out which row/constraint triggers the constraint exception When a dataset is modified and a constraint is violated, then there seems to be no way to find out which row/constraint violated the constraint. I get a System.Data.ConstraintException. However, there is no Row or Constraint property that informs which row violated which constraint. This is especially hard, when you need to debug complex queries that are used in a DataAdapter. Is there a workaround to find out, which row/constraint triggers the constraint exception?  - connection pooling on NT 4.0 Hi, we have a VB.NET application that connects to an Oracle 9i database with no problems using windows XP. On an NT 4.0 (sp6a) box however we get an error in the application "ResourcePool not supported on this platform". We have worked around this problem by using pooling=false in our connection string. 1) Is there any way we can "enable" pooling to work on NT4? (i.e. any addon software we are missing for NT4). 2) Are there any other known problems deploying to NT4 that we should be aware of?  - Returning SqlCommand Rows Affected and/or Result Set I am creating a custom SQL Server Query Analyzer application. I have a dilemma whereby I need to execute SQL batch files in dotnet (C#). I have no problem splitting the batch file out into a collection of commands based on the "GO" keyword. The problem is that some commands return rows (e.g. "SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER") while other commands modify data (e.g. "EXEC SP_PURGEOLDCUSTOMERS"). In the first case, I like to capture the result set rows for display. In the second case, I like to list the rows affected count. The first case can be accomplished via SqlDataAdapter.Fill(dataset). The second via ExecuteNonQuery. The issue is that there is no way (that I know of) to execute a sql command that both returns the number of rows affected and/or the result set rows. It's one or the other. In my app, I attempted to parse the command text to determine whether it required the first or second approach, but with commands like "SP_FLAGOVERDUEINVOICES" there's no way of knowing whether it will return rows or a rows affected count. I would like to execute the command text in a way that works regardless of whether the command returns rows or a rows affected count or both. Any ideas? Mario T.  - Data Tables ColumnNames not seen I've created a AlertDataClass below within the class I have tables and column that I've create. In the AlertDataAccess class I'm trying to insert data into my tables. AlertDataAccess is a Module that is trying to insert data into the tables. Within the AlertDataClass is subroutine that init and creates ColumnNames. In invoke the AddDataColumnNames() sub to create the column headers. Why can't I see the column names in my module that I'm trying to insert data into? It appears that CriteriaAlert subroutine can not see the table column that have been created.  - Cannot connect to sql server over the network. This is really weird. Basically I have the website(asp.net 1.1, written in vb) and sql server 2000 running on my machine. I have to copy the database over to another server for testing. So i change the connection string to point to that database, and it doesn't work. I've tried it on 3 different machines now. Changing the connection string correctly each time. And nothing. But it always works when connecting to the database thats local, not remote. Can anyone help?  - Getting rid of stored procedures I am looking at my project right now and I'm completely flabbergasted at the number of stored procedures. Now I'm fine with some of the more complex ones (with multiple joins and/or logic) but most of these are simple CRUD (create, read, update, delete) from a single table that should be generated automatically. I want to move away from stored procedures for these cases because it's a maintanence nightmare, has little if any performance gain, and is a waste of time. There is a great discussion on this in this weblog entry: http://weblogs.asp.net/fbouma/archive/2003/11/18/38178.aspx For these, I already have a strongly typed dataset so this should be really easy - I pass in my table to function foo and it should get filled (or updated, inserted, deleted). I could create a wrapper around the SqlCommandBuilder to generate the select statement along with the other three. This is done here: http://www.codeproject.com/cs/database/CustomCommandBuilder.asp Or I could use the generated embedded sql by configuring DataAdapters (by dragging in a table from server explorer) but this can get nasty and it generates a lot of ugly (but hidden) code. Now there are an abundance of existing solutions that will create the entire data access layer code for you. CustomCommandBuilder seems pretty on target with what I want. Is there a reason it received mixed reviews or why most solutions out there generate a complete data access layer for you? The way I understand the data access layer/block is that they leave all the database functionallity out of the database. Generice objects are setup for connections to the database(Update, Read, Write, delete). With that being the case I would have a generice access block for tables, views, stored procedures, roles, rules and users.
