    - DataTable Edit Rows I've searched and tried a few of the things I seen but nothing really helped me. I am in visual studio 2003 and using visual c++. I created a table by typing in the data inside the IDE. Inside the load event for the form I added rows to the table ataRow *myRow; myRow = dataTable1->NewRow(); myRow->Item[COL_COMPONENTS] = S"X-Axis"; myRow->Item[COL_UNITS] = S"Inches"; dataTable1->Rows->Add(myRow); myRow = dataTable1->NewRow(); myRow->Item[COL_COMPONENTS] = S"Y-Axis"; myRow->Item[COL_UNITS] = S"Inches"; dataTable1->Rows->Add(myRow); Now I want to edit a row. Change a column that was previously set to a null value. What I have so far is myRow = dataTable1->Rows->Item[rowNum]; myRow->BeginEdit(); myRow->Item[COL_CURRPOS] = tmp; myRow->EndEdit(); dataTable1->AcceptChanges(); Where rowNum = a known index number of the row I want to change, and COL_CURPOS is the column I want to make changes to. tmp is the variable holding the value I want to post to that column of said row. I have tried without the begin/end edit and without the acceptchanges... nothing seems to result in the column on my table being changed?     - Writing a Memo field to an Access DB with OleDB Hello, I have big problem on updating an Access Memo field with OleDb. While the InsertCommand works, then UpdateCommand raises an exception: Syntaxerror in UPDATE-Statement. I tryed various work arounds (the last 3 days) with and without the CommandBuilder with allways the same result.     - Why Must I Have "SET DATEFORMAT dmy" in Stored Proc? I'm calling a stored proc from C# and the call includes a datetime. The exe can run on machine A or B but the database is on machine C. When I run on machine A I need SET DATEFORMAT dmy in the proc or I get an 'out-of-range datetime value' message. I need to comment this statement out when the call is made from machine B. It seems as though I have a UK locale on machine A and a US locale on machine B and the swapping of days and months causes the error. Is this locale setting per machine possible?     - dataset safety? Hi, I am currently looking at re-writing a payroll/timesheet application that is currently in Access. The users need to enter timesheet hours for numerous employees. Up till now I have been experimenting and using strongly typed datasets as generated by VS. However as these provide a disconnected model, how can I prevent the loss of user data if the user PC crashes or dies for whatever reason. I imagine it would be inefficient to be performing writes to the database using datasets after every record is inserted. I like the binding and coding efficiency of using strongly typed datasets, however it would seem like there can be big overheads and risk in not updating to the database regularly.     - OCI.DLL: The specified module could not be found + OCIEnvCreate fa In VS2005 (Version 8.0.50727.42), I'm trying to create a "Data Connection" in the "Server Explorer" window ... I right click on "Data Connections" ... and choose "Add Connection" ... In that window, I change the "Data Source" to "Oracle Database" ... Then for "Server Name" I enter "newbisd.world", which corresponds to an entry in my TNSnames.ora file ... and I type in my Username and Password ... Then, when I hit either "OK" or "Test Connection", I get an error box titled "OCI.DLL" that says "The specified module could not be found" ... and after I click "OK" to that, another one comes up saying "OCIEnvCreate failed with return code -1 but error message text was not available." Where do I start?     - Oracle 10g Float and Double Database Datatypes are not supported Greetings, I have data values that are inherently of type Double. Current we are using Oracle Column Datatype NUMBER. When I create a TableAdapter in VS2005, the database table column information is read from Oracle and a new Table is created. However, the detected datatypes are always Decimal. Even if I change the datatype in the Database to a lower precision that would not exceed the precision of a Double, it is always detected as a Decimal. This forces me to cast everywhere, making the strongly-typed dataset, not as useful. Option 1: Now you might wonder, why not just change the datatype after the table is created. This does in fact work, but if you alter the Select statement later, the table is regenerated and since the datatypes no longer match what was found in the database, new columns are added with a "1" appended to the column name, which wrecks everything. So, I have to delete all the columns first, then make my SQL change, then go back and change all the datatypes back to what I need them to be. This sucks. Option 2: Use the new Oracle 10g BINARY_DOUBLE column datatype. This would be the preferred solution, but Microsoft apparently does not support it. Even though this may be perfectly matched with the precision of a System.Double. Option 3: Microsoft should detect the Precision and Scale of the NUMBER datatype in Oracle and use the appropriate .NET datatype instead of always using Decimal. I believe this is done is other MS products via ODBC, but not here... Question: Is there ANY numeric datatype I can use in Oracle that will be detected by the the MS Oracle Data Provider as a System.Double in the Strongly-Typed representation? I fear this answer is no. If it is, Microsoft should provide a hotfix to allow Option 2 or Option 3 to work. Without one of these solutions, maintenance will be a big pain. Other developers on my team, should be able to go into the Query Builder, check off a new column for the Select statement, and this should just add the new column, but this doesn't work. It makes a mess, and can go almost unnoticed until you build and a list of cast exceptions appears...     - Retrieving database schema Hi Everyone: Iâ??m new to the VB.NET development platform, and Iâ??m trying to understand how to retrieve database schema information from either of these databases: Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, or Oracle. I recently bought a reference book titled â??Beginning VB.NET Databasesâ?? by Thearon Willis from WROX press. From this book I have found a way to dynamically connect to any database and check to see if the connection was successful. What I would like to do is once the connection to the database is established, show a list of the tables contained in the selected database. If the user needs to add data to a specific table he would select the table he needs to add the data too and the application would create a datasheet with the columns (Fields) of the database shown in the order they where created in the table. I would also like to label the primary key of the table and any foreign keys that table references. Iâ??m having difficulty in finding examples of these types of operations.     - Count rows in dataset WHERE ... Hi, I am attempting to do a number of count functions on a single table of data for presentation in an ASP webpage. The functions are number today, number this week, number this month etc. As the Database table is large it does not make sense to query it directly a number of times. My idea is to create a dataset containing the table "ApplicationForms". I then want to query this and perform the various count functions. If I were querying the database the query would be: SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT fkiBatchNumber) AS 'YearCount' FROM tblApplicationForms WHERE (dtDateScanned < dtYear) dtToday is a datetime predefined in C# code. I have no idea how to query the dataset in an equivilent manner. Is this the most suitable method of acheiving my requirement? If so, any help in doing so is much appreciated. Thanks.     - Oracle TransactionScope Rollback issue I am having problems re-openning closed Oracle connections (System.Data.OracleClient.OracleConnection) when using TransactionScope and using the Rollback feature (i.e. not calling Complete on TransactionScope). I create a simple for loop with a TransactionScope statement inside. All that happens inside the TransactionScope section is an open and close of an OracleConnection object, and no call to Complete on the TransactionScope object (Rollback). The second iteration or the loop will hang when calling Open on the OracleConnection object. If you include the Complete call on the TransactionScope, it will work fine. If you exclude TransactionScope, it will work fine. If you step through the code, it will work fine. If you put a System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(50) statement at the beginning of the loop, it will work fine. I thought it might be a disposing/garbage collection issue, so I tried putting GC.Collect at the start of the loop, but that didn't work. If I use Oracle's provider, it will work fine (Oracle.DataAccess.Client). If you leave the connection open when iterating through the loop, it appears to work fine. I have the 9.2.00.54 Oracle client installed. I have some sample code listed below. We would really like to use the System.Data.OracleClient as opposed to the Oracle.DataAccess.Client. So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.     - dataset - Insert-query with stored procedure using wizard Hi all, I don't know where to publish this question but hope this newsgroup is okey. I'm working in Visual Studio 2005 and are now creating a dataset file where I will do all the transactions with the database. I have a consumer table where I want to insert, update and delete consumers. In the database I use uniqueidentifier on the primary key and said that it is a rowGuid - (newid()). When I try to generate a stored procedure to insert new consumers I have to insert without adding the primary key because it is automatically generated on a new insertion. However when using the wizard to generate the stored procedure the wizard fails when I remove the primary key. After the insert query the wizard created a select query with a where - clause like the primary key variable. (uidConsumerID = @uidConsumerID). Here I changed to SCOPE_IDENTITY( ) instead to get the databaserow from the current scope. But this fails. So what's wrong? What is the best way to make an insertion to a row using RowGuid on the primary key? Until further I will try to create the sp manually in the database and force dotnet to use my own stored procedure. In advance thanks a lot for your help!     - Newbie needs help Hi everyone, I'd like to access a database using C#. I've installed the Visual Studio 2003 and mysql essential and mysql administrator. On Visual Studio I go on server view and right click on SQL Servers, then I click on Register SQL Server Instance. It will prompt me to enter the instance name and login information but I'm getting this error - [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I'm sure that my username and password are correct. The only thing I'm not sure of is the instance name? Is the instance name the same as service name - such as MySQL in Services? Any help?     - OleDb vs. Sql Interoperability I'm building a lot of ASPX pages and business objects that consume and interact with database data. Some of this is done with data-binding, some is done with programmatic calls to Stored Procedures, Views, etc. I've created a DB class that I use to simplify and make consistent my inteaction with the database, and for all of the aspects of connecting to the database, building the call (query, Stored Procedure, Stored Procedure with Parameters, etc.) that works just fine. But here's my problem: Data that is returned comes back in objects like XXDataReader (OleDbDataReader or SqlDataReader). If I use one of these in my .aspx Pages, it means I've committed to using either OleDb for my database access of SqlClient for my database access. What if I don't want to have to decide? What if I want to set things up so that, if I want to switch from a SqlServer to some other database backend, I can just change my DB class, but not have to touch all of my pages and other objects? What's the most elegant and prefered way to do this? I know that I *could* just use OleDb for everything (including SqlServer), but that seems like such a shame in that I understand that the SqlClient access for SqlServer is supposed to be *way* more efficient.     - Strange error message I am inserting a new record into a table which has 4 columns, the first being an identity column. I am adding three strings to the other 3 columns using an ExecuteNonQuery. I have set the values of the parameters for the InsertCommand. The error I am getting is that the Input is not in the correct format for SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehaviour cmdBehaviour, RunBehaviour runBehavious, Boolean returnStream) My SelectCommand insert the three values and returns all 4, including the Identity column. My command is: this.sqlInsertCommand1.CommandText = "INSERT INTO Customers(CustName, CustAddress, CustPhone) VALUES (@CustName, @CustAddress, @CustPhone); SELECT CustID, CustName, CustAddress, CustPhone FROM Customers WHERE (CustID = @@IDENTITY)"; The only parameter I had to create was the @CustID parameter and it is the same type and size as the CustID column in the table I created.     - SqlCommandBuilder - not setting my identity column I ran into a problem when I tried to use SqlCommandBuilder to generate my insert statement. The problem was the identity column wasn't being set when I called Update. It was set correctly in the database, it just wasn't updating my inserted DataRow. This caused issues when I went to add rows in other tables that keyed off the one I just inserted because I didn't have the primary key. Long story short... I searched high and low and was finally able to piece it together between what I found in these newsgroups and the MSDN documentation. I thought I'd share how simple it ended up being because I saw some crazy work-arounds in all my searching. There were two key things that I kept missing somehow. 1. calling RefeshSchema to clear the command builders handy work and then resetting the insert command with my mods to the originally generated one. 2. setting UpdatedRowSource to FirstReturnedRecord. It ended up being so simple... sheesh! The hours I spent searching. I hope someone else gets some value out of this. For some of the new functionality I have decided to create a C# DLL, being a very neat and handy language. Except: The connection string that I have is of course "hard coded default", so that I could get the data in in the first place. The real life connection string that I want is something that I have read from another database in the main application (C++), which I now would like the C# DLL to use as well. This connection string also contains username and password set from a user login (using SQLServer authorisation). The C++ application, originally being unmanaged does not read an app.config file. The connection string is therefore not accessible through System.Configuration.Configuration.     - Challenging ADO.NET situation (long) I've implemented a solution that I don't really think is very efficient, but I can't really think of a better way to do it. If anyone has any suggestions or citicisms, i'd be grateful to hear them. .NET 2.0/SQL 2000 (not 2005). I have two identical databases that need to be syncronized, seperated by the internet. I've implemented a web service on one server that will return a dataset containing all the currently "active" records. I then need to import (or update) those records into the local database. The records are structured in a simple master/detail format with multiple detail tables, depending on a "type" column in the master (ie some records will use one table for a detail, other records will use another). The complication is that a) I cannot change the schema. It's defined by an off the shelf application. b) Records can be added to either database independantly, but data is always transfered from remote to local, not the other way around. and c) because of b, i caanot depend on the primary key of the master being the same on both sides (an auto-increment identity value). All data besides the primary key should be copied (or updated) from the retrieved dataset to the local database. What i've done is identified some unique rows that I can use to create a secondary (though not "official") key. The database does not constrain these values to be unique, but the application is designed in such a way that it will not allow them to violate the uniqueness. The general flow is like this. I iterate over the master table, then lookup a row in the local database based on the unquie data. I then issue an insert if no records are returned, or an update if one is, tediously copying each field from the datarow to the SqlCommand.Parameters. I then check my local database for any "active" records that do not exist in the dataset returned by the remote host, because a record may have been "closed" between updates. If I find any records not in my remote dataset, I then have to issue a web service call to the remote host to return the single record for the closed record. I then update that record with the returned data ("closing" it). Then I walk through each of the detail tables, doing a lookup in a dictionary of remote:local record mappings that created while walking the master table and insert or update any records there. These records do not have to be updated if the master record has been "closed". This is generally a lot of work, and doesn't seem very efficient. If both databases were local (or even connectable directly via SQL) then I could use a DTS package to do a lot of this much easier (and do a lot more in SQL), but because I have to retrieve the data via a web service, it makes everything more difficult. The key points that I see as inefficient (and am looking for some thoughs on how to simplify) are: 1) Getting the data from my remote dataset to the new database. Manually (and tediously) copying the columns from a datarow to cmd parameters. I tried using two datasets and copying the datarow ItemArray values, but had all sorts of troubles with the dataadapter updates and insertions) 2) having to requery the remote database multiple times for each closed row. It would be more efficient if I could send a list of keys to the remote server and have it return all those rows. Any suggestions there? Any easy way to use something like an array of integers in a SQL parameter to return a list of items in a WHERE clause? Hi all,

within an SQL Server Analysis Services project we are using an assembly to
retrieve dimension permissions based on data stored in a adminstration
database.

Currently we store the connection string used to access in the
administration database within the assembly:
Dim locCon As New SqlConnection
...
locCon.ConnectionString = "data source=eira; database=ServiceAdmin;
Integrated Security=SSPI;"
...

Obviously this is not a nice solution. As I understand it is not possible to
access a application.config file from a DLL, because the DLL will use the
config file belonging to the corresponding application.
I wonder if it is not possible to access one of the data sources deployed
with the cube from the assembly.

somthing like:
locCon.ConnectionString = "data source=cubedatasource"
with cubedatasource beeing the name of the data source used in the cube
Well, it doesn't seem to work that way. Any help is appreciated

If you have hard-coded the ConnectionString property, your logic can set it
to whatever you need at runtime. However, I might approach this problem by
creating a TCP/IP alias to redirect your connection to the appropriate
server instance. This can be done with SQL Server Configuration Manager.
