    - Occasional error opening a connection I'm using VS.Net 2003 and C# to write an app that connects to an Oracle 9i database. I have a button on a form that takes username/password/service name information, creates a connection string and issues an open command. From time-to-time, I get an error "ora-12154 tns:could not resolve service name". The problem is that it doesn't happen all the time. Any idea's about what may be going on?     - Developing using ce Hi I am new to sql server ce and am trying to get my head round how to develop using sql ce as opposed to sql server 2000. I want to develop for hand held devices using windows mobile. The vs.net 2003 ibuyspy compact framework sample runs fine on the handheld when compiled and run. My problem is how to setup a vb.net project which uses sql server ce as backend and how to move/install to handheld when needed.     - webservice deployment problem I have a webservice built and tested on my dev machine (with .net sudio, xp). Everything seems working fine for me in this environment. Then I tried to deploy it (I tried manual copy and setup project) to another server (win2k server with IIS and .net frmwk 1.1 but w/o .net studio). Of course I did not forget to create the application in IIS Manager. The service is world accessible. I can browse it by url http://myserver/myws/myws.asmx I can see the page listing all its service methods in myws. So far so good. But problems come out. I click on one of methods, put a parameter and click 'invoke'. A request is posted to http://myserver/myws/myws.asmx/mymethod But the reponse is "Page cannot be displayed". I also tried http://myserver/myws/myws.asmx/mymethod?param=1 which gets me same error. I also tried to access the web service from a asp.net client. I got an exception (see P.S.). All the stuff I tried above works on my dev box. I am wondering what is wrong. Please offer your thoughts and expertise.     - Newbie help with Datasets Hello, I am new to this and i am experimenting with Datasets and ADO.NET. I am trying to go smooth so for now so I created all my Adapters and Datasets etc. visually. However when i simply delete one of them from the visual panel, under my form, and then i create another one with a different name, I see that the create-Dataset-wizard list contains as options datasets that were there before but (are supposed to) have been deleted !!!??? Very weird ! Is it a VS 2003 bug? Do I have to go to the VB-generated code and delete them internally? I think this is probably dangerous.... Also, a dataset is a snapshot of a table(s) which does not contain relationship information from the database (?), but the user has to create it explicitly with myDataSet.Relations.Add. If this is true and i want to Bind (and synchronize) a whole bunch of controls, do i HAVE to recreate the relationships explicitly? Then what is the point of accesing a relational database?     - system.exception can't open Oracle 10g connection Hi, I am a total loss. I have VS 2002, Microsoft Oracle data provider and Oracle 10g client installed. I am trying to open a connection but keep getting a system.exception error. System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater. I have Oracle 10g installed! I can't open a connection. It's very frustrating because i have uninstalled, reinstalled the Oracle client and Microsoft Oracle data provider. If anyone has any ideas or help that would be great.     - OleDbConnection does not release Access database I have seen a few threads mentioning this problem, but none of them have offered a solution that works for me. I have an application that creates an OleDbConnection to a Microsoft Access 2003 database. When the application is done with the connection, I call the Close() method on the connection to free up the database resource. After reading other threads, I even added "OLE DB Services=-4;" to my connection string to prevent connection pooling, although I gather that it should have no effect on a local MDB data source. In any case, the application then attempts to move the database file (in preparation for a JDO.CompactDatabase call, which seems to be necessary for some reason), and I get an error because the database file is supposedly still in use. I tried adding calls to OleDbConnection.Dispose() and GC.Collect() in desperation, but nothing seems to work. Here's the offending code: dbConn = new OleDbConnection(); dbConn.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;OLE DB Services=-4;Data Source=" + dbPath; dbConn.Open(); // // Use the connection here... // // Disconnect from the database dbConn.Close(); Debug.Assert(dbConn.State == ConnectionState.Closed); dbConn.Dispose(); dbConn = null; GC.Collect(); // Prepare to repair the database (due to occasional complex join problems) File.Move(dbPath, "c:\\temp_location.mdb"); <---- ***** Error occurs here ***** Oddly enough, the error indicates that the target file for the move cannot be accessed: The process cannot access the file "c:\temp_location.mdb" because it is being used by another process. I can see that an LDB file is created when I call dbConn.Open, but it does not disappear until the application is closed, no matter what I do to that dbConn object. Does anyone have any suggestions?     - Weird problem in dataset - Bug? Hi all, Visual Studio Enterprise 2003 and DotNet Framework 1.1. I have a strongly typed dataset (generated by the Schema Designer). This dataset has a table called Category and one of the columns in this table is called "ParentCategoryId". There are no explicit relationship set between this column and any other column. Here are some non-contiguous lines of code: MainDS.CategoriesRow r = ds.Categories.NewCategoriesRow(); //create a detached row r.ParentCategoryId = -1; // set the ParentCategoryId....this is the problem column r.CreatedBy = -1; // set the CreatedBy.....this column is perfectly OK. ds.Categories.AddCategoriesRow(r); // Add the row to the table. The problem is when the AddCategoriesRow(r) method is executed, the the value in ParentCateogyId immediately changes to 1 instead of -1. This only happens if the value in this column happens to be equal to or less than zero. Any value < 0 is changed to 1. As long as the value is > 0, everything works as expected. The "CreatedBy" column is identical in characteristics to "ParentCategoryId" column. The above problem does not occur in CreatedBy column. Whatever value I assign to CreatedBy stays put. But not in ParentCategoyId column. I have tried every trick in the book to no avail. I even deleted the table from the schema and re-added the same to force a recompile of the XSD file. The only conclusion I can come to is that there must be some bug in the framework or the column name ParentCategoryId is used internally in ADO.NET which is causing some name conflict or something.     - Adding AutoIncrement column to table does not increment After retrieving a table from SQL. I wanted to add a column to the table with a record id. After retrieving the data and then I add the column and set the following properties: dt.Columns.Add("NewColumn", GetType(Int32)) dt.Columns("NewColumn").AutoIncrement = True dt.Columns("NewColumn").AutoIncrementSeed = 0 dt.Columns("NewColumn").AutoIncrementStep = 1 Nothing happens.     - DataRelation CaseSensitive String Field I'm creating a DataRelation between two datatables of a single dataset. One of my relationship columns is a string field and I notice that the DataRelation is case sensitive. Therefore, If my parent table contains a record in with a value of 'name' only records in my child table with the value of 'name' will be included in the DataRelation. If the child table has a record with a value of 'Name' this will not be seen or included in the relationship. Is there any way to turn off case sensitivity in the Data Relation? I've gone through and set the CaseSensitive property of the dataset and all it's individual datatables to false before i apply the data relation and that doesn't seem to work.     - Retrieving Oracle Procedures ResultSet I'm trying to use fill a table using DataAdapter::Fill with a Oracle procedure or function result. When I call a SP (with a simple select query) from SQLServer I don't put return value on the Command's Parameters.     - Querying a DataTable Hi, I have the following method, which sends an array of integers to another method. The array is obtained as follows: 1. Select rows from a datatable where boolColumn has been checked in a datagrid. Dim dRows() As dataRow = myDataTable.Select("boolColumn = True", "", DataViewRowState.ModifiedCurrent) 2. Initialize array and set capacity Dim arrayMyInts(dRows.Length) As Integer 3. Populate array by looping through the array of datarows returned by .Select method. For n As Integer = 0 To dRows.Length - 1 arrayMyInts(n) = dRows(n).myDataTableIntColumn1 Next n The datatable has a key that consists of two integer columns, myDataTableIntColumn1 and myDataTableIntColumn2. Therefore, the potential exists that the array I populate in step 3 (arrayMyInts) is going to have some duplicated values in it, as it could be that two or more datarows that are returned by my Select methods criteria will have identical myDataTableColumn1 values. My question: How do I get at only the UNIQUE myDataTableColumn1 values? Can this be done by refining my Select method? Could I query the array to return only unique values?     - Editing still possible when AllowEdit = False I'm using a bound control, a textbox bound to a column in a dataview. Despite setting the AllowEdit property to False, changes in the text in the textbox are saved to the dataview and underlying dataset. When using the update command of the dataadapter these changes are saved to the database. When editing a value in code AllowEdit has to be set to True. So AllowEdit seems not to work for bound controls, Is this true or am I missing something. I'm using a DataColumn = Expression with the DataTable Select method to return rows matching a = data. Rows are returned on my Windows XP Professional computer at home, = but no rows are found on the client's Windows 2000 computers. I have checked the regional settings' date format on both machines, and = they are identical. The expression used in both locations are = identical, and the data used in both locations are identical.     - Cannot change ReadOnly property for the expression column Hello All. I am using a strongly typed data set in a C# application. Some of the tables contain columns that are computed values by means of the Expression attribute in the data schema. I get the above exception on an update via the data adapter. I have seen some references to this problem as a known bug with work arounds but none seem to work (I have tried erasing the expression, doing update then re-adding expression and also deleting the column doing update and re-adding it to the table after execution with little success).     - Datagrid Child rows I have a dataset that contains 5 tables. One parent and 4 child tables. When I bind a datagrid to the parent table, the "+" expand is visible. I then click the "+" sign and the names of the child tables are there. But, I can only see the first two, and the Horizontal scroll bar does not allow me to scroll and see the rest. The datagrid property "HorizScrollBar" does not appear to be available at design time to modify the minimum and maximum properties. Does anyone know how to get this to work?     - RowState changes to Modified if a DataRow is viewed via a DataGrid Hi, I have a DataTable that is bound via a DataView to a DataGrid. Every time I click on a row on the DataGrid, the underlying DataRow's RowState property gets changed to Modified. Is this the expected behavior? Is there a way around this? I checked these rows field by field and there is no difference. Read further, it gets even more bizarre. Then I do a GetChanges which gives me the same rows marked as modified as expected. I update my database with the resulting DataSet, and everything is good (nothing gets changed since there are really no changes). Then I try to merge this DataSet with the original big one and I get a constraint violation. There are no constraints on my DataSet that do not exist on my database. And the database was happy, so why is the merge failing. Please note that I am using int identity fields for PKs, but I am not even adding a row, nor really modifying anything!     - Inserts and the Identity field I am trying to run an insert statement against a table, and I get an error: "Can not insert explicit value for identity column in table "table name" when Identity_Insert is set to off." Now, in the set up of the table, when I populate it, I set the Column in the columns collection to be an identity field and I set it to true and all that. This message seems to imply that I need to set something on the SQL Server side, through the database, but I'm thinking I shouldn't have to do that. How do I get around this?     - DataTable.Select Bug in .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 Once again I'm submitting a bug introduced with .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 that is breaking our application. We use DataTable.Select method all over our application. One of the places we use it is to filter some Entity information for permanent deletion from the database! We noticed that the code that worked perfectly for months stoped working with SP1 of .Net Framework 1.1 with information loss since there were database deletions! We use loads of filters like this one: "(HistoryStartDate >= #07/01/2004 00:00:00#) AND EntityId=7016 AND FieldId=70 AND Deleted=0" this worked perfectly without .Net Framework SP1 but not with SP1. We have put together a Test Harness (with source code) at: http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0434926301/ The sample default filter is the one specified above wich should return 0 rows when applied to the default sample data (TestData.XML - included with the Test Harness). The problem is that the Date part of the filter doesn't work properly and rows are returned. If you try to apply just the Date part of the filter to the same sample data no rows are returned (the expected result!). I have seen other threads reporting this problem but it seems like the guys at Microsoft aren't very concerned since there are no replies.     - editing in binding manager I need some help. Hopefully will be simple. Usually I have users edit data in a data grid and then I call the update routine if the dataset has changes. I have an instance where data is bound to text boxes on a form. If the user needs to edit the information in one or more of these text boxes, these edits are not being saved back to the database. If threw in an if statement (if ds.haschanges then update...) but when debugging it is seeing that the dataset does not have changes. So I take it that directly typing into a text box that is bound to a field in the dataset does not directly change that data and set that row to modified? What might I be doing wrong here?     - Crystal Report - From stored proc. to unbound fields Hi all, I'm actually filling a report created with CR, using a stored proc. The data is returned in an ouput parameter of ref cursor type, and retrieved from a dataset using ADO. To display the data on the report, i used unbound fields, as i have single values only. Meaning, my dataset has one row but with multiple columns, each of them, bound to my unbound fields. Those unbound fields were added to the Header section of the report, as they need to be displayed only once. The behaviour of the web site is goverened by various database settings, for example font-type, font-size as well as access to functionality (this function switched on/off) etc. For sake of simplicity, let us assume that all this information is held in three tables with almost identical schema. The first table contains all the settings for the Company, the next contains any over-rides required by a specific Department, and the third table contains all the over-rides required by a specific User. 4 use-case scenarios: + User A uses the company default values; the specific values in the Department and User tables are 'NULL'. + User B uses his Department values to over-ride the values in the Company table (his user record has 'NULL' + User C uses her own values to over-ride both the Company and the Department values. + User D uses his own values to over-ride the Company values; Department record contains 'NULL' So, the scenario is that the UI demands to know (say) 10 parameters for a particular user. Some values are therefore likely to come from all three tables. So, what is the fastest/most scalable way to achieve this (using VB.Net, ADO.NET, SQL)? The information will be READ only at this stage. [I am extremely new to .NET (VB6 back-ground) and THINK that I require a DataReader object to be returned to the UI, though am happy to be advised on this.] In VB6, I guess that I would have done this by: + The UI calls the BL asking for a particular User's settings. + The BL calls the DL asking for a hierarachical recordset (data-shaped). This contains the User record, the Department record and the Company record. + The BL then iterates through the User record - for every 'NULL' value it looks in the Department record and (if that's NULL too) in the Company record.     - Dataset not populating Hi, I created a dataset by dragging a (SQL Server) stored procedure from the Servers pane. The dataset consists of three tables that are not linked (at least I do not enforce contraints). But when I try to populate the dataset by SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter.Fill(ds, tableName) I receive the following error: "Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints." Please note that the same code works fine for a different dataset, so there are no syntax errors. I have checked that all the fields that are not marked as minOccurs="0" return not Null values; I even tried to set minOccurs="0" for all fields in the dataset - same result. Please help....
