    - Creating views from linked servers I have created a linked server to an Oracle database (using the Oracle ODBC driver 8.01.07.00) that I wish to query in SQL Server 2000. My SQL server contains other applications that my web application uses. The web application has a data access layer (a series of classes) which call stored procedures, which in turn call views. Using Query Analyzer, I can query data with the following: SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT * FROM OPENQUERY(PAY_PERS_EXTR, 'Select * from TABLE1') Appointment_Distributions INNER JOIN OPENQUERY(pay_pers_extr, 'select * from TABLE2') Person ON Appointment_Distributions.EMPLOYEE_ID = Person.EMPLOYEE_ID ORDER BY Appointment_Distributions.EMP_NAME My problem is that I'm not able to successfully save a view that contains the results that I wish, using the above syntax. The error is: ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' ITransactionJoi JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d01b].     - Oracle date problem We are having problems while retrieving dates from the oracle provider. If we make a query with SQLPLUS we obtain the exact date. Using the oracle client provider included in ado.net we obtain dates with 1 or -1 differences. For example, in the table the date is 11/Jan/2004 , and it returns 10/Jan/2004 The problem is with the time recorded in the field. What can the problem be??? Thanks.     - CurrencyManager_ItemChanged Question. Hi There, I have a windows form that uses binding through a currency manager. A dataset fills tan Adapter and everything thing is good in life. A list box gets populated with a list of names and that works good, whenever I click on a item on the list box the data on the side updates. This is the problem that I'm getting though, When I change some data on the right, let's say the lastname or first name that does not get reflected on the listbox, for that, I have included this code on the currencymanager_itemchanged event.     - DataRelation - update parent and child at same time? Hello ADO.NET gurus :) I am fairly new to database work and am hoping someone can help me with a DataRelation question. Anyway, I am working with an orders database. I have a DataTable of orders, and another DataTable of order details, and need to get new orders into my database. I was able to set up a DataRelation between the two tables, however I have an unfortunate limitation: I need to add the new orders and their details in the same database transaction. (This is due to the limitations of my database, which is proprietary and not relational.) Therefore I can't follow David Sceppa's recommendation of first adding the order and then updating the line items. I think the best solution would be to pull in the details table when I update the master (or vice versa), but I'm not sure if this is possible. Is it? The other alternative I see is to maintain a cache, have the details table update to this cache, and then pull in the cache when you update the master table.     - ADO.NET C#: varchar() fields are padded with spaces on some records Hi, I'm reading a table with varchar() strings. For some reason this fields is sometimes padded up to the max length with spaces. To be sure that the length is correct in the MSSQL 2000 database I added a len(MyField) in the query. SELECT MyField, LEN(MyField) FieldLen FROM MyTable If I watch the contents of SqlDataReader on a 'good' record I see: _comBuf[0] "Estna" _comBuf[1] "5" In case the field is padded I see: _comBuf[0] "Kos " _comBuf[1] "3" So the length that SQL returns is 3, but in ADO the length is 20 (which is in fact the maximum length).     - ConnectionState issue I'm seeing something weird and I must just be overlooking something. I have a connection and I open it(connection is named 'cn'). I close it in my execution block but I have it wrapped in a Try/Catch/Finally and in finally I check if the connectionState <> ConnectionState.Closed - if it's not then I call .Close. However, even though it successfully closes and the debugger tells me it's closed in the If Statement, it still runs to Close. This isn't a big deal in that it doesn't cause any problems but I've verified that the connection is closed and I'm wondering what's up with that? Finally Debug.Assert(cn.State = ConnectionState.Closed) 'The assertion doesn't fail indicating that it's in fact close If cn.State <> ConnectionState.Closed Then cn.Close() If I put my cursor here (On cn.State) it indicates closed as well, but it always calls Close anyway. Antes de actualizar la BD accedo a las filas añadidas y modifico un campo a partir de unos cálculos y después hago el AccepChanges del dataset temporal, tras el cual hago los INSERT con un ExecuteNonQuery de esas filas. Is there anyone who knows how I can use a datatable, dataview (and datagrid) and have the sorting that I specify, DataView.Sort="col dir", to only be evaluated when set (once) and not have the view resorted constantly. Currently I'm drowned with Moved events. If I try to do this smart stuff dv.Sort = "colA ASC"; dv.Sort = ""; the view immediately goes back to some default sort.     - Using DataView or Select expression on a DataTable to filter distinct records From the brief research that I have done, nothing is mentioned about being able to filter out distinct records from a DataTable using DataView or or using the select method like: someDataTable.Select() = someExpression. Because I need my DataTable to contain all the records, but I only want to show distinct records, I have a for loop and some register variables that test whether current record is distinct or not. As I mentioned earlier, ASP.NET is a framework allowing you to use various programming languages. In addition, it is touted as having a great object-oriented model. All this is true, but it becomes a detriment as far as speed is concerned. For all that advantage, there is a lot more code to run through to execute the same ASP page than you have to execute in the PHP engine for an equivalent PHP page. PHP is the quick-and-dirty type of solution, the one to get the job done. And though a lot of robustness has been added to it since its 2.0 and 3.0 days, it still retains that core optimized high-speed approach. Speed is not the only consideration. Memory usage is also important. SECURITY COMPARISON ASP.NET officially requires that you use IIS. Unfortunately, IIS has a long history of vulnerabilities, which makes many administrators reluctant to deploy it to handle their web site. Whether these weaknesses are because of Microsoft's ineptness or because IIS is a real red flag to hackers is irrelevant: Those systems have a history of being hacked and compromised. PHP runs on Apache, too, which is fast and open source and has a good security track record. Also, as I mentioned, Apache runs on many platforms. So is PHP really faster than ASP.NET or is that for certain unoptimized pages? And are they comparing this against the DataGrid instead of the repeater control or even the fastest way using asp.net's inline code render block, <% %> comments?     - Force Requery I have a dropdownmenu which is databound to a table via a dataadapter and dataset. A control on another part of the form updates the same table in the database.     - DataGrid - Catching backspace key click before its processed. Hi, I am trying to catch the user clicking the backspace key, Keys.Back. I need to do this as I cant allow the datagrid to add a new blank row when the user clicks the backspace key whilst they are in the last row in the grid, if the row is also empty. Anyway I've derived my own custom control from the DataGrid and want to pre process the backspace key.     - Filtering GetChildRows I have an xml file which has defintions for "event" elements. Each event (currently) has 2 standard fields "id" and "name", and a number of custom fields, the number and descriptions of which may be different for each event. Taking the first DataRow in that table (event one) I Call GetChildRows. However The resulting table not only has the "custom1" and "custom2" columns (with the correct values) but custom3, custom4, custom5 (with null values). My question is, is there any way of filtering this so the only columns returned are the ones specific for that event, eg custom1 and custom2.     - Oracle Probs with ADO.NET Hi, I'm using Oracle Client 8.1.7 with VB.NET DotNet 2003. I'm trying to connect to an Oracle DB using Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle. I'm being able to create the Data Connection but when i try to create the OracleConnection and the OracleDataAdapter, i'm getting the folowing message: Unable to find an entry point named OCIEnvCreate in DLL oci.dll I checked the permission on the Oracle Home folder (c:\orant) but it is set to full control for everyone.     - Performance question - Output parameters vs single row? I'm aiming this question at Bill Vaughn but anyone is welcome to jump in. I have seen several articles claiming that it is faster to return a set of output parameter values rather than a single row. You make a reference to this for ADO on Page 269 of ADO.NET and ADO Best Practices. I don't see any numbers to back this up and attempted to run a simple test of my own. My test just ran a loop to populate the fields on a form based on a single record from the Northwind Orders table. I ran the loop 100,000 times using two different stored procedures. The first one used output parameters, the second returned a single row into a datareader and I looped through it to get the column values. I ran the test a half dozen times for each, just to see if I was experiencing any variation between tests. The single row test completed in approx 22 seconds and the output parameters test in approx 27 seconds each time. This was not what I was expecting so I'm looking for any comments on these two approaches.     - CommandTimeOut Problem Hello, I have a table with about 1 million rows. I need to scroll them and use sqldatareader for that. The TimeOut property of command object i use to create the reader is set to 0. I use MSDE 2000 on my local computer. The problem is that although my timeout is set to 0 which assumes that it is infinite it still gives me TimeOut exception after retrieving approximately 20000 rows (different each time). The interesting thing is that reader.Read() works fine and returns true, but reader.getvalue(<anyindex>) crashes. This is obviously a bug because if i set my command's timeout to 65000 it works fine. I have a form showing records from parent table - "Provider" (databound controls) I have a checkedlistbox bound to a child table - "Site", via a junction table -"PersonSite". Items in the checkedlistbox are checked if records exist for current parent record in the junction table. I am having problems removing rows from the junction table if the user deletes the parent record. Could someone tell me how to do this?     - Expression Aggregate Question I am using a Winform. If I understand things right I can create a new field in one table of a dataset and get the aggreate value of a field in another table of the dataset that is related. To test this I have a form with the orders and order_details tables of the NorthWind Database of SQL Server 2000. In the .xsd file called DataSet1.xsd I added a new row to the Orders table. The E field = element, the field to the right of it equals TotQuant and the field to the right of that equals Int. This table is related to the Order_Details table with a relation name DrMain. In the expression of the new element I wrote the following Sum(child(drMain).UnitPrice). When I run the form I see the new field in the orders table called TotQuant but it equals Null.     - Ado.Net and COM+ Hello I'm pretty new to ADO.Net and I'm still a little confused about some things, I hope I can make myself clear. I'm writing a data-centric web application using ASP.Net, based on a SQL Server 2000 database. I have a table called Person that I'll take as an example of how I access data. I build a dataadapter that access a stored procedure and returns the data into a dataset. i take the datatable and pass it to a custom business object that i use as a PersonCollection. If I want a certain person i query the table and return a datarow that I wrap inside a custon Person object, with properties that wrap the datarow fields. What i want wo know is: how do I update 2 or three of my wrapped tables inside the same transaction using COM+? I'm a litte confused about this. I can update the fields inside the datarows and the write back the changes using a dataadapter using its Updatestatement. But as far as I know a COM+ transaction abort will not affect the datarows rowstate attributes.     - DataTable is Filled From DataSet each time a change is made Because I'm a beginner to ASP.NET, I may be not familiar with the way each ASP.NET page is processed. In the books that I have read (scanned), the purpose of DataSet is to keep your data in memory until you decide to commit the changes. Ok, so I create and fill my DataSet in the Page_Init section (I have tried in the Page_Load section as well), and then later use one of the tables from the DataSet in the DataGrid. But when I try to edit a row in the DataGrid (by pressing the Edit link in the EditCommandColumn) a request is made back to the server, thus reloading my page and reinitializing everything and making a request to the database and FILLING my DataSet AGAIN. I mean how is that different than just updating the database each time and skipping few steps? Am I doing something wrong? From my understaning it should reside in memory and not be reinitialized each time I make a request to the page. What would I have to do in order to keep it in memory and not reload it each time I make a request to the page? Would I have to keep my DataSet object in the Session variable or something?     - Expression Clairification I posted two questions yesterday with regard to expressions titled "Expressions and their limitations" and "Regenerate the dataset and expressions" I must appologize. It has been some time since I visited the subject of Expressions and it appears I have my facts wrong. Let me start again. I don't understand what's going on. Perhaps my notes are incorrect or perhaps there has been a change from VS 2002 to VS 2003. I am trying to add a field called "Name" to a table in .xsd dataset. This field should contain an expression. The expression should concotenate the first name field and the last name field of this table into one field called Name. My notes indicate that I should be able to add a row to the table. When I do, this row contains three fields or columns in it. The first field is to have a value in it of element, the second to have a value of name and the third to have a value of string. Then my notes say something I can't explain. Maybe someone else reading this can. They say, "In the properties field of the new element there will be a property called expression". It is here, my notes say, that I am to write the expression.     - Simple 3 tier stuff Sorry about this but I'm new to ADO.NET (finally coming from simple ADO, bless it) and I'm trying to create a simple three tier program. Ie, User interface Layer / Business object layer / Database layer I've got a simple program that is activilly populating and writing my satasets. They are currently only mapping the database tables.So 1 dataset, 5 datatables and several relationships. In this program I can't seem to hide the database information very well from the user interface. What I'm looking for is an example that hides all the connection and data objects in the middle tier, so that the user interface simply has to deal with collections and such like.     - Regenerate the dataset and expressions I am struggling with the basics in Ado.net using VB.net for non web applications. I have been using expressions in the design mode of strongly typed datasets (.xsd files). However, I have discovered that if you regenerate the dataset, the expression goes away. This is not what I want. I am wondering how others deal with this issue. I can think of a couple of ways of dealing with it. Don't know which is best. One, don't regenerate the dataset. If you add a field in the underlying SQL Server table, for example, and you want your dataset to reflect it, add it explicitely in design mode of the .xsd file. Two, If you are going to use expressions do them in code as opposed to in the .xsd file. If this is bes, it becomes a matter of where to add them; that is, in what event?     - Expressions and their limitations I am using VB.net in a non Web applications I have been reading up on expressions and they seem quite helpful. However, in one book I've read it talks about what appears to be a severe limitation. The book may have been written before VS 2003 so maybe the issue has been fixed. I don't know. What I am told is that "Using expressions in combination with DatRelations gives you the ability to create a user-friendly form for viewing data. However, you may find that in some situations the data is not editable". In some circumstances it appears that if you create a column with an expression you will not be able to edit that column, which is understandable; but you may not be able to edit any of the other columns in the table either. If this is the case, it would appear that expresessions are severly limited in that they can only be used (Practically) in forms where there is a view only capacity.     - Activate edit mode on CurrencyManager? Hi there, I have a WinForm with two textboxes binded to a CurrencyManager. What I want to do is this: to get the CurrencyManager's edit mode activated when the content of any of the binded textboxes is changed. Then, I would like to capture this change of state (in some event perhaps?) so I can enable the 'Save' and 'Cancel' buttons. Is this possible?     - Super-fast keyfile New to ADO.NET so seeking comments on strategy. I need to scan data, and build a "keyfile" on data I am extracting during the scan. Actual fields varies by job, and I dynamically create this from a description, and there may be 5-30 fields of integers and strings typically. Small jobs may be a few hundred records, but I could have up to 250,000. The machine this runs on is an extremely fast, dual processor, with green gobs of physical memory. I need to sort the data in alternate orders, make passes over it, updating and filling in more fields as I go. My thought was to use an Dataset. I understand I can make tables programmatically, and populate programmatically, record at a time, field at a time. Then I can use a Dataview to make passes in alternate orderings, and make changes and fill in empty fields. After each pass I want to persist the major table to Jet, primarily for problem analysis. As each pass is done, replace the table content on disk with what I have in my in-memory dataset. I have already implemented this talking directly to JET, but have been dissappointed in the performance, even after some amount of tweaking. It would seem the new approach should be a real screamer.
