    - Real time site monitoring ASP script Hi, A client of us asked to write a script to View live visitors as they browse her website and to get the information such as, what page they are viewing, what browser type they are using, IP address/host name, visitor time on site and screen resolution.     - Restricting Application to Public (Making an "intranet") Hi! I'm very new to ASP.NET and really need some good advice from experts here. I'm creating a web application for my company now. This application has 2 parts. 1 part for the customers to access. The 2nd part is for our staff to access only. My director hopes to make the 2nd part to be something like an intranet, such that only our company's computers (maybe only 1 or 2 in the company) can login to this part of the application. 1. My company's intending to put the application on shared server with a web host. Windows Authentication is NOT allowed. 2. My company doesn't have a static IP address. 3. My manager suggested using Network Card number (which I don't really quite understand. Is there a way to get the Network Card number that's on a client PC?). How?? Some ISP told us that they can provide a firewall management feature such that it will restrict access to the website from anyone that is not coming from my company's network. This requires Static IP. Another told me that IIS Manager has the security feature that restrict access based on IP address. This requires Static IP again. Is it possible to implement the 2nd part (the part that is to be accessed by my company's PC) as a windows application instead? Then we only put the windows application on one computer. So, 1st part (for the public) will be a web application, 2nd part (for my company) is a windows application, both accessing the same database server from an ISP. Will the ISP allow the windows application to access its database server? I've no experience in making a windows application at all, is it the same as making a web application? Please advise.     - Suggestion Assistance I have my webserver and a database. Things started to slowdown a ton with access, permissions denied (it is on a Windows XP machine, 10 session limit, etc). I moved my database off the webserver to a faster and more secure location. I can't access the database through the webserver anymore. I am using Windows Authentication.     - ASP/CDO Mail and Exchange 2000 on AD Domain I have no idea how to get started, really, but I am looking for a way to have an email sent via an ASP page via our Exchange 2000 server. I have a fairly simple asp page that displays data from a SQL 2000 database in the form of web links. A part of this page allows people to post links to the database for display. When someone posts a link, I would like an email sent to me with the data (link) that they posted through the ASP page. This page is on our internal web server only and only our domain users can access this web server. We have a single exchange 2000 mail server. I did look at ASPFAQ 2026 on using CDO for sending e-mail but this doesn't help me much because it doesn't say anything about connecting to the exchange server or anything about proper authentication with the exchange server.     - Response.BinaryWrite for one JPEG is Very Slow I am using Response.BinaryWrite to display JPEG's to the browser. The problem is that in IE, one particular JPEG is loading very slow. Normal JPEG's take a few seconds, but this one sometimes takes up to 30 seconds. THe weird thing is that if I refresh really quick, the JPEG appears for quick second, and then the new Response.BinaryWrite kicks in. So, it looks like the browser has the image, but for some reason it is not finishing loading it into the browser.     - ASP -> Excel Hello all.. I'm working on some reports, and have added the ability to "download" the reports to excel. Not a big deal, fairly straight forward. However, PHB wants to be able to create some pivot tables from said reports (again.. no biggie) and when he goes to save the file, Excel wants to save the file as a web page instead of and Excel spreadsheet. Now.. I know the simple thing here is to just pick Excel from the drop down box in the save as dialog.. but.. PHB would "prefer" to not have to do that. Has anyone been able to jump this hurdle before? My good friend google hasn't turned anything up.     - 2 WebServices with the same name on 1 Server? Hi, I have developed a WebService (with .net) and have to install it on a Windows2003-Server for TEST and PRODUCTION (my Customer has only 1 Windows-Server). It it possible, to use the same name (of the asmx-file) for TEST and PRODUCTION (same files in 2 different folders; I have installed the PRODUCTION-WebService and want to copy it to another folder) or do i have to deploy the WebService for TEST with a different name (and a second installation)?     - IIS6/worker processes/performance counters Hi... We're looking at moving an ASP app from IIS 5 to IIS 6. In general things seem to be working okay, but there are some oddities around the edges. One of those unanticipated changes has to do with the new process model and the option to have more than one worker process per web instance. We found that each worker process has its own Application() state and anything your app puts there/uses gets a new copy for every worker process. So depending on how much initialization your app does in Appication() that expense could get paid over and over as IIS 6 cycles worker processes based on idleness, load, memory use, etc. The facet I still have a question about is performance counters. When you have multiple worker processes for a web instance, are the usual performance counters like Active Server Pages/Requests Total, Requests Queued, etc aggregated across worker processes? How are they impacted by worker process cycling? How about custom performance counters? I assume we'd probably have to take extra effort to aggregate custom pcounters across worker processes - is that right?     - Site navigation question Completely new to technologies like CSS, but trying to learn fast.... I've seen a few sites with "very sophisticated" navigation tools that provide menus that both drop down and expand horizontally...very similar to the menu tools we're used to in Windows applications. Anyhow, in an attempt to mimic this, I've looked at a web few sites and studied the source files. It appears that there are two schools of thought here. The first uses unordered lists and the second uses tables to hold the information. Both then use a combination of CSS and JavaScript to control the behaviour. Which really is the method of choice?     - Developing a "google-like" search engine for intranet Hello guys, I've been building a search facility for an intranet site I'm part of developing and we've been building a search engine using Index Server. It mostly works, however there have been a few niggling problems and fixing it seems to be a case of patching errors as we find them so I'm thinking that it might be worth starting the logic from scratch and rebuilding this again. Basically we have a simple search, which is simply a text box with a submit button. I would like some boolean search functionality, ie. search term - would search for all items, search OR term - would search for documents containing either words, search AND NOT term - and so on. We also have an advanced search, with a number of fields - 'all words', 'any words', 'exact phrase' and 'not containing'. Does anyone have any information on building this kind of search, either sample code or simply just a text on how someone might have done this kind of thing.     - Send mail and auto submit a form? Hi All, I am working on a script and I have a form to a page to be submitted (POST-ed) to an external site. I need that when the user submits the form, first step is to send an email using an asp script and only after that to post the information to the web site.     - fso fails when connecting to mapped drives from asp on IIS 6.0 I've seen posts similar to this, but have not found the magic bullet to solve my problem.. I have an asp page (see source code below) running on IIS 6.0 on Win2003 Server that tries to get file and folder information on a Novell Server. I am able to successfully connect to the share on the Novell box if I use the UNC path. But, unfortunately, I need to have the mapped path for my application. I created a simple vbs script and saved it to the server desktop and run it to verify connectivity to the Novell box. I am logged in to the server with the same user as set up in my website as the anonymous user. The vbs file runs perfectly. But as soon as I move the code into an asp file, I get the following error "Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a004c' Path not found". If I go into my asp file and change the path to the novell box to a UNC format, then it works. Below is the asp file: <% dim fso, fil, fldr, sbfldr set fso = server.CREATEOBJECT("Scripting.FileSystemObject") set fldr = fso.getfolder("g:\doc_test") for each sbfldr in fldr.subfolders response.write sbfldr.name & "<br>" next %> At this point, I don't feel like it's an authentication issue because I can get it to work with UNC.     - IIS Stops working after 2-3 days I am working on a project using classic ASP. Every time I install Windows and IIS, it works for 2-3 days and then starts having problems. Specifically, things that have to do with the FileSystemObject stop working. I have tried Win2k, WinXP, the IISs that go with them, different partitions (fresh install), turning Windows Update Off as well as doing full updates, and cannot find a solution that works for more than 2 or 3 days.     - ASP Database Problem I have a windows200 server running iis5. I have a number of websites on the server, most of them using asp and either MSAccess or Sql Server databases. Every now and then all the pages that access a database slow way down or time out. I have spent a lot of time trying to track this down and have not found anything that would work. Here is my story. I know it's not a "pure" asp problem because test asp pages that don't access a database will load just fine. Around the time of the problem I often time see the following error, but not always. Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is: {00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable. (I have done this. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290398) Other websites on other servers that access the same SQL Server work just fine. VB programs running on other computers that are running against a database on the server with the websites that are having problems sometimes error out. at about the same time. The processor on the server always drops to almost zero during the time the pages are not working right. Sometimes the problems clears all on it's own. Sometimes I have to run iisreset to stop and start the server. Sometimes it won't restart and I have to reboot. My gut tells me that it's not related to iis or asp but I don't know that. I have always had some network problems with this server where from time to time a workstation may take a few seconds to browse the files. Confused? I am!!! Please help!!!!!     - Post file from server to another server - Urgent help required I accept a few user inputs and a file from the user, post it to my ASP page. I'm able to receive the data as well as the file properly in Receiver.asp. In my receiver.asp, I need to process the user inputs and subsequently POST this data and the file again to a different server. I would like to use ServerXMLHttp. Now, how do I simulate Form creation in receiver.asp. I use the following code to post to the second server MyXmlHttp.open "post", myTargetURL,false MyXmlHttp.setRequestHeader "Content-Type", "multipart/form-data" Now here's where I get stuck. 1) How do I construct the form data? How can I put together the data i received (which is text) as well as the received file (which is Binary) in the same Send statement for the Post? -- I assume that if HTML forms do it in some format, I should be able to simulate the same through ASP, but how??? 2) The received file will not be stored anywhere in my server. It has to be forwarded in memory. Should it look somewhat like the following?     - Want recursive SQL query function to generate breadcrumb navigation I'd want to make a custom class that will generate breadcrumb navigation for my site via a recursive query, e.g. Home > Page1 > Subpage 1. I've structured my database with hierarchical parent/child relationships. Can someone help me set up the code structure? I'm using ASP VBScript, and I have a table structure similar to the following: NavItems ---------- NavitemID (PK) Nav_ParentID Nav_Name The top level record in the entire table is "1", but it would be nice if I could parameterize the function so that I could specify the ID of the current page and the ID of the topmost ID I want to trace to, e.g. GetTrailOfBreadcrumbs(CurrentNavitemID, TopmostNavitemID) The least expensive approach from the standpoint of the database would be something that used something besides ADO recordsets to grab the data. I get an object required error but I know the object exists and is correct becuase I can write the query string value and properties of the object with a server script.     - Cannot grab some of the values from a form Hi, I got a simple form where one needs to input data. The data is being processed in an asp page. However, I cannot figure out why couple of values I am typing in the form is not being retrived in the asp processing page. Instead it shows as a null value. Any help is appreciated.     - Excel properties Curt and McKirahan have been very helpful the past week as I have been introduced to something new to me: generating a spreadsheet from ASP. Now that I have the spreadsheet, I am in need of knowledge about how to control the properties. By properties, I mean font, hyperlink, and color information. But, if you went with a Windows Explorer type of view, you could try to duplicate the behaviors. The ability to select a file and press F2 to rename it. You could use context menus for file operations. Confirmations for deleting. It'd be a LOT of work, and involve much, much more client-side code than ASP I'm sure. I've seen things before you'd have a list like so: ../ file1 delete rename file2 delete rename file3 delete rename The delete links would just do a if(confirm('delete?')) {... and then delete the file. The rename links would take you to a different page with just a textbox in which you type the new file name. If file date/time is within last 10 minutes then response.redirect to file else do something else end if The text file is not located on the webserver. I created a virtual directory on the webserver which allows me to response.redirect to the file. However when I use the FileSystemObject to check the date/time, I cannot find the file. It seems like it only works against files on the webserver. UNC paths do not seem to work. I was hoping the virtual directory would allow me to specify something like c:\inetpub\wwwroot\<VIRTUAL DIR NAME>\<FILE NAME>, however that's not working either. I'm a little perplexed. <%@Codepage="65001" %> changes how IIS/ASP will handle interpreting query string variables - i.e. it will read the querystring as being utf-8 encoded. However, I'm finding that it *doesn't* change how Response.Cookies or Request.Cookies get read/written. I've been testing with a little jscript asp page with the lines if (String (Request.QueryString ("abc")) != "undefined") Response.Cookies("abc") = Request.QueryString ("abc"); Response.Write (Request.QueryString ("abc")); to take a value from the query string and pass it back out as a cookie. The test value I was using was r%c3%a9sume (resume with an accented e). When the code page is set to utf-8, it will properly interpret the urlencoded query as a utf-8 string. It will output the right bytes with Response.Write. But watching the headers produced by the request, it comes out encoded in latin-1. Set-Cookie: abc=r%E9sume; path=/ I checked the cookie rfc on w3c.org, and oddly it doesn't say much about how to encode/interpret cookie NAME=VALUEs. The only comment on character set in the spec is that a cookie *comment* has to be utf-8 encoded. I couldn't find anything on the MSDN documentation that addressed cookie character sets either. Anyway, the solution for these users is to rename the word document before they save it. Does anyone know what would cause this for the occasional user? A browser security setting maybe?     - localhost... hi all I just bought a new computer with win XP PRO. I'm trying to set it up so that I can use it as a local host and with IIS etc. I don't really know where to start. How do I start running IIS? At this point, pointing to localhost doesn't work but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing. I'd really appreciate any help. I have been running IIS on Windows 2000 for several years with no problem.
Today, when I clicked on the system tray icon and clicked start service,
nothing happened - no error messages. IIS just ignored me completely and
would not start.

I am about to try a computer restart - but has anyone else run into this
problem?

I have discovered problem - Skype (internet telephony) - stop that and all
is fine again.
