    - using dot.net with asp classic ? If we installed .net studio on our development server, I would like to think it would work seamlessly with our existing classic asp code ? I am mainly interested in what debugging features this would give me.     - Focus on element not working correctly Here is the scenario. I have an alert that fires if the user has not filled in a field. What I would like to do is have the browser focus on the message (div id="message"). That div is generated only if there is an error, and the server side code is placed within the head. What I think is happening is the js focus is firing BEFORE the div is rendered, because I am getting the js error document.getElementById("") is null or is not an object. This is not something vital, just something I think would be nice for the user (especially if the form and message are below the fold). I have included code and markup below.     - Trying to get Microsoft Script Debugger working with classic ASP, please help .. I am trying to get the debugger to work for ASP. The server is set up with classic ASP, on IIS 6.0. I just installed the Microsoft Script Debugger version 1.0.7295, and older product (97). Anyway, I followed all the config instructions I could find. I had to run the debugger by finding it in Windows Explorer as the install gave me no icons. At any rate, I noticed when I had the debbuger running and I was looking at help files on the server, the debugger showed those as running documents. To configure for debugging, I enabled debuging asp in the IIS manager I ran dcomcnfg from startup/run found machine debug and set the properties. Location is checkboxed as "run app on this computer" The ASP 3.0 book (1999) says to to start/run: MMC and use that to configure debugging. I figured out how to do that after locating the iis.msc file, and then finally it appears that from that angle it looks correct as well, but when I open a browser session from a remote machine that connects to the server, the debugger doesn't show anything in the running documents window, so I am stumped at the moment and slightly bewildered, any ideas ? things to try ? thanks alot Tag: is there any way to print a stack trace in ASP classic ?     - Getting fragment from URL I have a series of pages I want to put a link on that will allow them to go back to the page they entered from (the referring URL). The problem is that to return to the previous page correctly I need the fragment (page.asp#fragment) along with the referring url. Problem is that ASP does not seem to provide that. Part of the reason for using stored procedures with parameters is so you don't have to resort to dynamic sql to execute them.     - How to Handle Many Page Links in a Search? Search results on my site started to show a large number of page links. I never had to deal with it before but it is time now. I am trying to come up with a good logic / idea how to display a large number of page links without showing all of them at once. For example, if user is searching for "pets" and gets 50 pages back, I want to show 10-20 page links and hide the rest. Also, the closer user gets to the last visible pages, the more hidden page links become visible. Something like Google does...     - Loading an ActiveX DLL is superslow I have developed a Visual Basic 6.0 ActiveX DLL to help to interact with some ASP pages. I have copied the compiled DLL in C:\INETPUB\WWWROOT in my XP Pro machine. After making some configuracion changes for solving the problems with the message: Server object error 'ASP 0178 : 80070005' Server.CreateObject Access Error The call to Server.CreateObject failed while checking permissions. Access is denied to this object. Basically, the changes were: 1. In IIS configuration check "Anonimous access"., Application protection in "Low", Execution permissions, "Commands and executables." 2. Use CACLS to give the user IUSR_<computername> full access to MSVBVM60.DLL Now I see that when I call the ASP page that uses the ActiveX DLL, in Internet Explorer 6, it lasts about 5 minutes before I get the results. Hi All I was trying to setup IIS, ASP and MSDE 2000 Rel A on a machine yesterday and my usual SQL server OLEDB dsn-less connection string would not work on this machine. I know it's down to this, as I used a tool called QTADO to setup dummy data in the db and I had to use an ODBC dsn-less connection to connect to the db. I couldn't use the program's default OLE DB method. The machine was WinXP Pro SP2 (might have been SP1), but I thought the OLE DB thingy came as standard on this OS. I didn't have chance to try the standard SQL ODBC connection string, will do this on Wed, but I'm sure it will work. Any ideas why the OLE DB wouldn't?     - Loading partial page from file. Getting data from an database and displaying it on a web page is some thing I have done for years. Now instead of getting data from a database, I want to get the text of a file and display that on the web page. The file choice is determined by a user click on a anchor link. So far I have considered using fso to read a line at at time and doing Response.Write for each line read. Seems to me there should be a more elegant solution. Should I build an array of text line while reading and do only one response write? Or is there another solution that I have not discovered. Suggestions please.     - PPT viewer in a asp.net web application Hello, I need to develop a web site for a learning centre in asp.net 2.0. They want to deliver part of their courses on-line. The customer will have a username and password to access a reserved area. In this area, they need to show some powerpoint files resuming the lessons. The end users can or cannot have powerpoint installed on their computer, so I though that a ppt viewer is needed. There are a couple of check in "Folder Option" -> "File Types" that can change the behaviour of our web application: "Browse in same window": if it's not checked, the ppt is loaded outside a web page "Confirm open after download": if it's checked, the system ask if you want to open the file or download it into your system. Is there a way to bypass the user configuration on the machine, in order to be sure that he will always open the file in the browser window as we expect?     - Session variable, security, SSL, I'm confused I'm using asp, not asp.net. I've got some open ended questions that I was really hoping someone in here could answer, or direct me to some resources that will help me answer them on my own. First, the session object. When a new user comes to my site, asp creates a session object, and a session id on that object. That session id is sent back to the client and stored as a cookie(?) that can be used to identify a single user across multiple browser requests. Is that right? Second, can that sessionid be sniffed? I'm assuming it can be. But if Bob comes to my site, gets assigned a session id of 1234, and then logs in (via username and password that I validate on the server, all behind an SSL certificate, I guess), I could store the correct username "bobsmith" in a session variable. Is that session variable also sent to the client? Does Bob, even though he can easily lookup the session id of 1234 in his cookies, know that I stored another session variable that identifies him? So Bob can't ever log in as Bob, but then try to impersonate Jane after he is validated? Does this even make sense? In another scenario, Bob gets sessionid 1234. I store his username bobsmith in a session variable. Should I also store his referring IP and some other things (user agent, etc) and compare those with every page request? If something changes in those things, does that mean that it is possible I'm being felt out/attacked? Is it conceivable that Bob's IP address might change but that the session is still the same session id? As far as SSL goes, when developing a site I don't have a certificate. When I am ready to go live with this, do I just find a webhost that will get a certificate for me, and the webserver handles whether or not all traffic goes over https? I mean, do I have to do anything special with my code, or is that all web server configuration stuff? What is a good way to secure a site? I'm really talking academically here, but I may develop a real world site in the future that needs this kind of security.
