    - How do I get the user logged in to Novell Network Hello all, How can I get the user ID (Novell 5, IIS5 on Windows 2000 Server) using ASP? I did find an example using JavaScript however it uses an ActiveX control and then all my users would have to click OK to allow the control to run.     - Login Progress Bar I am using Commerce Server and during the login phase, it may take a while. I have been requested that if someone is in the progress of loggin in, to display an animated gif stating "Please Wait". I am not allowed to use frames (I know why) and have been asked to avoid JavaScript if at all possible. Does anyone know how to check for an event, display a gif without waiting for the current function that manages the login to return before refreshing the page.     - large data file manipulation I'm looking for information on working with large data files using FSO, XML. I have a program which creates a large CSV file, over 7mb. It's a rate table of freight shipping costs. There are certain fields I do not need, some are blank. A typical line would be: Raw data: " ", "30142", "GA", "01001"," ", "MA"," ","100",018609,000000,000000,000000,014435,013181,010622,009022,007125,006569,006569,006569,006569,000000,000000,000000,000000 structure: blank,fromzip,fromstate, tozip,blank, tostate,blank,class, mc, blank, blank, blank, l5c, m5c, m1m, m2m, m5m, mxm, mxxm, mxxxm, mxlm, blank, blank, blank,blank I don't need the double quotes or spaces or any field determined to be blank in the structure. It is my understanding I can read this file in 3 ways: read(b) readLine readAll I chose readLine because I didn't want the 7mb all at once nor reading bytes because the line is not fixed. I'm using readLine. I manipulate my data and append my data to a new file after 1000 lines, finishing up with however many lines are left upon reaching the end. My result file is a little over 3mb [41380 lines of raw data]. It takes seconds to process and will only be used if shipping rates change. The 3mb file is still too large to work with and I have decided to split it up in one of two ways, either by state or zip code ranges. "By state" gives me 50 and zip range gives me 10. Not sure what the difference in size will be or if it will be a noticeable difference. The rate table, or part of it, will only in memory long enough to get the rate and then released. I have printing to the screen turned on during the debug process. How much more efficient is XML to retrieve information over CSV being read in? To make a true comparison, the result will eventually be multiple files, read in with readALL [if used as CSV] and then I would search an array for the rate I needed. If I used XML, would it be necessary to split the file up, as I would with the CSV [by ship to state] or could I use the single file? The browser = varies from Win95 and Win98 to AOL10 and WinNT 5.1 (WinXP). So it doen't = appear to be a client side issue, it appears to the be server.     - Change in Short Date format under Hebrew Regional Settings This is regarding a change in the Short Date format under Hebrew Regional Settings, that has caused huge problems in our ASP web application. The change appears to have been introduced sometime before Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and has remained through to Windows XP. I am looking for a solution that doesn't involve rewriting our application (much) and that allows all our users to keep using Hebrew Regional Settings. To summarize our problem - we have an ASP-based intranet web application that is used in our Israel office. Before we installed Windows 2000 SP4 on our web server and on the client machines in the office, the application ran perfectly. Dates appeared on the pages and in input textboxes in the correct dd/mm/yyyy format. Immediately after installing SP4, dates on the pages and in input textboxes are formatted as yyyy/mm/dd. This is not just a visual change, it has caused many functions in the application to break. No change was made in the Control Panel Regional Options on the clients or server. In fact if you look there, when Hebrew is chosen, the short date format on the Date tab is set to dd/mm/yyyy. We have pinned the problem down to residing in the vbShortDate argument with the VBScript function FormatDateTime. Following the installation of SP4, RTL control characters are inserted (unicode character 8207) after each date separator (/) in the date returned. I am certain that this is a bug with windows, or a badly implemented new 'feature'. Suppose we're working with the date January 20, 2004 and the serverside ASP code is returning exactly this (unformatted): 20/01/2004 1:00:00 When we format the date using FormatDateTime(datevalue, vbGeneralDate) we get this (the exact same thing): 20/01/2004 1:00:00 However, when we format the date using FormatDateTime(datevalue, vbShortDate) we get this: [Char8207]20/[Char8207]01/[Char8207]2004 This translates to display (inside an input field in internet explorer) to: 2004/01/20, although the date is really being written as the line above, i.e. [Char8207]20/[Char8207]01/[Char8207]2004. Internet Explorer is writing the date to the screen correctly, but the control characters that the formatdatetime function using vbshortdate argument are inserting are rearranging the display. The reason this is such a big problem is that other ASP functions that process dates do not recognise these dates that include the control characters as valid. If we use the IsDate function on the output of FormatDateTime("20/1/2004", vbShortDate) the result is FALSE (because the control characters exist). Does anyone know of a permanent solution to this problem that doesn't involve rewriting our application (much) and that allows all our users to keep using Hebrew Regional Settings?     - Showing Calculated fields in the form Hi, I have a asp input form of a financial report. Here most of the fields are text boxes where the user need to input the values corresponding to an item. However, there are few items which are calcuated field. I have a pluggable asp.net hosting provider which uses a cassini-based http listener if the platform is win2k or xp (non sp2), and uses a HTTPAPI (http.sys) based listener in a managed c++ dll if the platform in win2k3 or XPsp2. The solution works perfectly when the HttpWorkerRequest is implemented in a c# dll. When it is implemented in the managed c++ dll, I always get the following error: The application's configuration files must contain 'trust' section. Stepping through the code, I can see that asp.net receives my HttpWorkerRequest and properly maps the directory to where I have my web.config. Adding a trust section doesn't help for any values in it. Some of them I put in data with numeric value and some of them I put in "Unlimited" as the value. Then, I allowed people to insert data but only with conditions. They can insert data if the value they are trying to insert is smaller than the one in the database. For "unlimited" value, they can insert any value. My problem is.... if the limited value in the database is 35, we cant insert data of 40 but we can insert data of 100.     - Blank ASP pages. Hello, We use Vignette V5.6 to display our site. In our CMA site, we have a page which has FRAMESET and in one of the frames we call a ASP page. There seems to be some problem that the frame shows the ASP page is blank. When we restart the IIS it works fine. But after some time it again shows the blank. If we get one blank page, all the asp pages under the same virtual directory, called in the Frame shows blank. FYI. I've added: Response.ContentType="application/vnd.ms-excel", and it works fine for several clients. For other clients it displays an emptry excel sheet. I'm not sure, but i think it has something to do with the excel version installed on clients - empty sheets were displayed for Excel 2000 clients while clients running Excel 2002 displayed the report correctly. If I add: Response.AddHeader("attachment","file_name=%file_name%"), all clients display the data correctly but the styles are lost.     - Mutex page operations I have a site which is using caching for some frequently used pages. When the page-level cache expires, or is expired by me, the page will get re-rendered to a static HTML file and then shown to the user, after it has been rendered. Assume the cache is stale. Somebody comes along and requests the page. It will then get re-generated, but whilst this is happening, if somebody comes along and requests the page again then they can get an error because the static HTML page file is still being recreated by the previous page request. What I think I need is a mutex for the page to stop this from happening, for the second page request, during cache refresh. So: 1st request owns the mutex until finished, and, whilst it's updating, all other page requests wait on the mutex. How can I implement a 'mutex' style operation for this scenario in ASP or handle it better to avoid this situation from happening? I've got my code able to understand if the page being requested is actually being updated, so I could just redirect the client back to the same script again, but at the same time the update process itself takes less than a second, so if the page could somehow wait for the operation to complete it would be a cleaner operation. I tried wrapping the Sleep API in a COM object, but this didn't seem to work and I'm just looking for a bit of a sanity check on the best way to go about this.     - ASP will not serve requests because it could not perform the first request initialization / HTTP 500.1.1 SERVER ERROR Hi, I'm spend many hour to fix this problem, read many articles about it but no article gave a solution. To isolate the problem I've created in IIS6 (WServer2003) a virtual directory test to the local C:\test, in this directory I have index.htm and test.asp (just a simple Response.Write "TEST"). Opening the server/test/index.htm show the page, server/test/test.asp gives an internal error (500). The event log gives me the "ASP will not server..." error. I cannot find any ASP errors (friendly message turned of etc.) so I guess the page ASP script is not started. ASP is enabled, if I disable ASP I get could not load page in IE.     - asp question about text file I wrote an asp program that displays some information line by line such as name, address, town, state, zip and it prints about 200 lines to their browsers when the asp file is called. It is comma delimted so they can import into their database using access for example. 1. when they do file-save as to a txt file, it does not import right for them.
