    - Slightly off topic : Reducing piracy/licensing etc... Hi all, I've written an application that's currently being used by 1 company, and soon to be used by another. I was thinking the other day how as this is all just written in ASP - ie, no .dll's or anything else, I have very few ways to prevent anyone working at these companies taking a copy of the application and distributing it to other people. Whilst they'd probably need to know ASP and have a good database knowledege - it would still be possible. I would like to try and reduce the possibility of this happening as much as possible. I am soon going to issue a license number to the company using it, they will then be able to use this with their details to login to our server for updates and so on - so I can restrict what people get that way I suppose. What I was wondering was whether I should take the 'login' page completely out of the application at the clients end and put it on our own servers - ie, they login with their username/password/license number and then get sent back to the application at their end - but even this is not really 'secure', plus anyone with a little ASP knowledge could just remove the security code in the application at the moment if they really wanted too... (hehe, maybe I shouldn't have commented the code :D)... So, does anyone have any good ideas on how to reduce (note I dont say prevent) the chances of my application being distributed for free etc? I normally wouldn't be too bothered, but it took around 6 months to develop, they've been using it since April this year and seem happy with it, and there has been a lot more work done on it since, I'm sure it could be better, but for me its something I'm quite proud of.     - Can you help? Basically, what I'm looking for, is some sort of script that I can drop into a folder on my server, and when someone visits that specific folder (I'm going to remove all file's from the folder as I've moved the site), the script detects the file is not there, and auto-redirects them to the new location (kind of like a "clever" 404 page). As I do not have direct access to my server's settings (such as editing 404 pages etc), I cannot do it the "normal" way.     - parsing string, leaving words intact Hello, I need to parse a long string into no more than 30 character chunks, but I also need to leave the words intact. Right now, I am using: For intStart = 1 to Len(strOriginal) by 30 strPrint = Mid$(strOriginal, intStart, 30) Print #detailFile, Tab(1), intStart, Tab(4), strPrint Next intStart and it's fine, but splits up some of the words.     - I just spent several hours shaving a total of 250 milliseconds off my application building variable width/DB tables etc using getrows instead of movenext. Performance is a major concern as this app requires SSL. My question is, when does it become more about the challenge of building faster apps vs. getting the job done??? If my calculations are correct, I just added an extra 10,000+ possible hits within a 12 hour day or so.. an extra 10,000 hits???!!! What percentage of applications do you think will ever see this kind of traffic? Is this insane? If this app ever gets maxed out, will my end users ever realistically notice a difference?     - Memo snippet Hi all, This is my first post here. I have been looking everywhere on the forums and all over the net but i cannot find anything about this. I did find one tutorial ages ago but didnt have a use for it at the time. What i would like to do is have a page that cycles through a database and display lets say the last 5 new records. Then display the first 200 characters of a memo field and have a "more" link which opens the full record in a detail page?     - session variables disappear in IIS 6 I have an ASP program that uses session variable to keep data between pages. The program worked fine under IIS 5, but with IIS 6 these variables randomly disappear. Note, the problem seemed to start when Windows Share Point was installed on this server.     - Attempting to write to a website Hi, I'm experiencing a problem where IIS is returning the error message "Server cannot complete the operation" when attempting to use the CopyRecord method of the Record object, passing it the URL of the destination folder. The website I'm trying to write to has both Write and Directory Browsing enabled for now. Is there something else that could be preventing the copy? The website is working fine otherwise.     - get e-mail address from Exchange? I have asp for an employee directory with photos. All the info is stored in an Access database including e-mail address and phone number. I would really like to get the e-mail and phone numbers from our Outlook/Exchange address book. This address book is kept updated but my database is not. How would I go about extracting this info from our global address list? Would it be better to create something that updated the Access database offline rather than dynamically query each persons entry from the web server?     - OLAP cube ERROR: "the data being processed is over the allowed limit" and tips on increasing speed Hi, My OLAP data cube is giving me the following error when I am manipulating OLAP data cube views: "the data being processed is over the allowed limit" I know that this message is caused by the size limit of each form field that is retrieved in the Request object is 102,399 bytes. The error occurs when I exceed this limit. Microsoft recommends the following: http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=273482 and this guy has another technique: http://www.pstruh.cz/tips/detpg_largepost.htm But how would I integrate these solutions for the OLAP cube viewer (in a internet explorer web browser) that Microsoft released with their sql 2000 resource kit (asp and javascript OLAP cube viewer)? Also, I need tips on increasing the speed of the cube. My cube is only using 10 percent of my multi-processor machine. How would I increase the amount of the processor(s) used for displaying my cube?     - ASP / Hidden text box issue Hi! I am having a really strange issue. I have a few users calling in saying they are getting an error. On further review I found this line is what is causing it...     - putting '/' in field name Hi everyone, I have a form with '/' in some of the field names, when I pass through to the next page the field name comes back as though it's been htmlencoded, so getting the value out of the field I need to convert this back to '/' with the replace (same problem if I have a ',' in the name) Is there an easy way to htmldecode or something what it converted to the encoded versions?     - Response.Addheader I'm trying to save an ASP generated table as an Excel sheet, but when I use this line: Response.AddHeader "Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=report.xls" I loose part of my table layout and get an error message on a missing file (stylesheet file), If I however first display the table as Excel in the browser and then save it as xls it does save the layout and the stylesheet settings...     - What should I do if one of my update fails? I'm setting up a site that prompts a user for information about people and stores the results in a Access database. This database is then used to create accounts on the network. To store the user data I need to run three separate INSERT queries into an Access 2000 database. What I'd like to know is, should one of these updates fail. What should I do? Especially if its the second or third update! At the moment all I'm doing is watching to see if there is an error in each update function. If there is one, then it abandons the whole thing and redirects to an error page. Should I be trying to backout of any previous updates, or trying the broken function... or something else? What is the correct course of action in such circumstances? Becuse the data is not so tidy, and sometime the strings have a little difference but still a duplicate, I don't compare with this field. In this case, I have to select those fields that don't have so much confusion.     - what is postback? I always see the term "postback" from ASP book, but I am not sure if I fully understand the meaning. Here's my understanding so far, please correct me if any mistakes. Here's a typical html form: <form action="process.asp" method="post"> 'GUI code </form> "postback" action happens when the user click the submit button, that means it will invoke "process.asp" is the above code.     - New to asp and need help please I have already created an asp login/database for a learning/quiz section on a small site. There will be multiple quizzes through the site and what I need now would be help: tutorials or advice that a complete novice can understand/follow to create the following: A small simple quiz--for now each has just one question with 5 multi-choice buttons. On submit should send the answer to A) a database (using access for now) to track scoring after all the quizzes are complete, and B) popup window with their choice and correct answer for each quiz. The boss wants it so that, depending on the severity of the ticket, we go into the DB and check every 15 minutes or so to see if the ticket is being handled. If no activity is detected in an accepted amount of time, then an email gets sent automatically to certain managers, The first article cited above gives 4 options, and the last two aren't possibilities in my case.     - Limit on HTML listbox entries? I have an ASP app (developed with Interdev 6) which uses a DTC listbox (server-side) bound to a recordset to allow the user to make a selection. This works fine until the number of records in the record set seems to hit a limit (not determined the exact limit, but seems to be c. 400). If there are too many records, the app just hangs until it hits the scripttimeout limit. I've tried increasing both the command timout (I'm using an ADO command object to generate the recordset) and the scripttimeout to no avail. Does anyone know whether there IS a defined limit on the number of entries in a listbox? Also, any better ideas on how to allow the user to select from a large number of records (> 1000)?     - Query Problem This might be the wrong group (but it is my favorite) I need to sort a list data from a text field into numerical order.     - JPGs & GIFs not displaying Hi, I have a number of ASP pages where some JPGs and GIFs are displaying in the browser and some are not. I have included an excerpt from the HTML below. In this example, the gif file at the bottom of the example is displaying (I have others that don't), while the jpg file at the top isn't. Both files are in the same folder (visible bith physical in WE and virtual in CM) as the asp file itself. WHen not displaying, it displays instead the link placeholder with the name of the jpg or gif file. Right-clicking displays a menu which includes "Show Picture", but choosing that does nothing. What could be inhibiting the display of graphics? The entire page and all the pages relating to it are otherwise working fine.     - Inconsistent unexpected errors----iis 6 ---W2K3 Server At least once per day I am receiving this error on this specific page. "Error: File /customer/record.asp Unexpected error. A trappable error (C0000005) occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running.." This page gets hit thousands of times per day yet it usually only logs one incident of this error per day. I have checked every resource and made all the recommended fixes but it still occurs. This page uses some ADODB connections, Jmail, and sets a few cookies. I cannot reproduce the error. I have no clue as to what it could be. All code is sound and works correctly.     - SetFocus using Javascript Hi, I have a textbox on an asp page. The text in my textbox is 'MM/DD/YYYY'. When the user tabs into teh textbox I clear the 'MM/DD/YYYY' and set focus to the control.     - Operation aborted - User/Organization link error in BizDesk This problem appears when users're going from Users to Organization (links) or vise versa and totally at random. The error message appears in a pop up window: "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site "file://C:\aa\Project x.x.x.x 80.hta". Operation aborted. OK" After clicking OK the system will continue to work. This problem is not consistent and is seeing on part of clients PC. According to Access my ADO connection has a value of 16
for the Transaction DDL property. Does anyone know what
