    - Need Help With QueryString & Password! An ASP application retrieves records from a SQL Server database. In the first page of the application, the user has to enter a password & the columns retrieved from the DB table depends upon the password. For e.g. if the password entered is say, pwd1, then that user should be displayed the records of Column1 & Column2 only. If the password entered is say, pwd2, then that user should be displayed the records of Column1 & Column3 only. If the password entered is say, pwd3, then that user should be displayed the records of Column1 & Column4 only. Now after the records are displayed, the user should also be given the option of sorting the records. I am implementing this by making the column header a hyperlink which has the column name & the sort order as the querystrings, something like this (the records are being displayed in a tabular format): ---------------------------------------- <% Dim strColName,strSortOrder,strPwd strColName=Request.QueryString("colname") strSortOrder=Request.QueryString("sortorder") strPwd=Request.Form("pwd") 'assume that the user is displayed the records of Column1 & 'Column2. This correctly sorts the columns & serves my purpose. But the problem is since the columns displayed depends on the password entered by the user, when it comes to sorting the records, even the password has to be passed somehow along with the column name & the sort order. Of course, the password can be passed as a querystring along with the column name & the sort order but that's definitely not a wise idea. So how do I pass the password when the user clicks one of the column headers to sort the records? One way of carrying the password forward is by encrypting the password & then sending it through the querystring along with the column name & the sort order but I would like to avoid such a solution. This solution will be my last option. Please keep in mind that the columns displayed to a user depends upon the password; so the password has to be sent somehow along with the column name & the sort order (column name & the sort order are being passed through the querystring). For e.g. if the password entered is pwd1, then the user sees the records of only Column1 & Column2. Next he clicks the column header 'Column 1' (which is a hyperlink with the column name & the sort order as the querystrings) to sort the records based on Column 1. When the link is clicked, pwd1 also has to be carried forward so that this user is displayed the records of Column1 & Column2 only & not the records of the other columns.     - Deleting blank lines from text file I have a text file being create with the FileSystemObject. It's being built based on results from a SQL query. All this is working fine, but so that I have a carriage return VBCRLF at the end of each row, I have an empty row at the end of my text file. How do I delete this last line?     - ASP Classic and .Net Components Hello, I have just moved an ASP Classic website to a new hosting company that has a number of .NET components available. The website works fine after the move with one exception. We were creating PDFs using ASPPDF for ASP but now it looks like only ABCPDF.NET is available. My knowledge of ASP.NET is very limited at this time and I am planning on converting the site to ASP.NET soon but I really need to get the PDF working as soon as I can. Is any of the following possible... 1) "wrap" the ASPPDF com control so I can use it at the new hosting company as a workaround for now? This would be the easiest for me as I would not need to change the asp classic code (maybe a little). Maybe place the asppdf com control in the .bin directory? The control does need registered in it's current form. 2) access the ABCPDF.NET component from a classic asp page? 3) write the pdf code in ASP.NET and then call that code from an ASP Classic page? If I write this as a web service can I call the web service from an ASP Classic page? I would need to pass a parameter, maybe two parameters to the pdf code 4) I am open to any suggestion other then migrate the website to asp.net at the moment as I need to get this up and working in the next few days if possible.     - Performance problem when moving to new server Hi All, We need to move an old asp database application that I wrote to a new server. But when we do we start getting serious performance problems as more and more users connect. By old I mean old, its using a MS Acccess 97 database as the back end which is on the server also. There are no code changes just a streight move from the old server to the new server. I testing it seemed ok, its only when a few users start connecting that the performance get really bad. It seems the initial connection time is one of the obvious problem areas. The original server is running on Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 with IIS 5 The new server is running on Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 with IIS 6.     - display problem Hi, I have a strange problem when i try to display my data on a web page. Everything's fine until i try to display a Date Value.     - Charset in XMLHTTP or an alternative solution? Hi, I'm trying to get some data from an external website using XMLHTTP, but my problem is that the data is with special danish characters in (ÆØÅ), which are being replaced with "?" due to UTF-8. I've tried to specify the charset using response.charset, but that doesn't seem to have any effect. Any suggestions, or alternative solutions to XMLHTTP?     - Correct HTTP response status code on "Access Denied" page. Hi, I have a password-protected area on my site. I'm not using any server authentication methods: Instead I prompt the user for a username and password using an HTML form and check these against a database of registered users. I was thinking that this page should be returning a HTTP status code of "401 Unauthorized" instead of its current "200 OK". My reasoning being that this would let search engines know what's going on when they request a protected page and get redirected to the "Access Denied" page. I experimented with adding response.status = "401 Unauthorized" to the "denied" page, but now it displays a (Windows/IE) username & password prompt instead. The HTTP sniffer shows that the www-authenticate field is set to "Basic". My question: How can I indicate to the search engines that the page it is requesting requires authentication, yet have it not display the login/password dialog box?     - Importing comma delimited file I've been asked to develop a semi-automated type situation where we have a database table (sql server) and periodically, there will be a comma delimited file from which we need to import the data, replacing the old. I naurally know that we can use [truncate tablename] to kill the other data, but does anyone have any examples of importing a comma delimited file into SQL Server with ASP?     - Session Problems with Desktop Shortcuts in IE I have an issue that I've been encountering in an ASP application I'm working on. Most of the application is written in ASP, but there is one page written in ASP.NET. The ASP.NET page needs to have access to the ASP Session data to run correctly. In order to achieve this I create my own HTTP request for a certain ASP page with the name of Session variable that I want is stored in the query string of the request. The requested ASP page sends back the Session value in the response (you can see more on this at http://searchvb.techtarget.com/vsnetTip/1,293823,sid8_gci951935_tax293033,00.html). This seems to work in general but we have noticed a few difficult to reproduce problems with this. When multiple instances of the web app are set up in different virtual directories and the user creates desktop shortcuts to access each installation, there appears to be problems with the Session data. When the user opens up more than one shortcut at once, it looks as though all the browsers are running under one IEXPLORE.EXE process. This would explain things if the ASPSESSIONID cookie, which holds the ID for the Session data to use for a particular user, is held in the shared process. However, on different servers the Session bug is not always reproducible. In other words if the user has a desktop shortcuts to "http://Server1/app1/login.asp" and another to "http://Server1/app2/login.asp", the Session accessing will have problems. However if you do the same thing on a different server, that is "http://Server2/app1/login.asp" and to "http://Server2/app2/login.asp", the bug will *not* occur. The servers are running different versions of Windows and IIS, so I'm sure that has something to do with it, but I just can't figure out what. Through some experimentation using FireFox and Live HTTP Headers, we found that sometimes FireFox will contain two ASPSESSIONID cookies, where the characters after "ASPSESSIONID", but before the '=' sign, are different. Since both FireFox browsers were running in the same process and yet somehow correctly handled the Session data, we assumed these extra characters helped the server distinguish which Session data the browser needed. However, these cookies have magically stopped appearing (though FireFox still seems to handle the Session correctly). And I've never gotten the multiple cookie thing to happen in IE. Has anyone heard of this issue? Since people use desktop shortcuts quite a bit, I would have expected this issue to have occurred a number of times in the past, but I'm having trouble finding any info on it.     - trying to open excel from a page (changes in 2002+) hi.. i'm trying to have excel open up a webpage which basically contains a table. in excel 2000 if i specify content type text/csv this works by displaying an open/save dialog box and clicking open, launches excel and displays data as a table (desired result ) however in machines with excel 2002+ excel simply displays the html code. trying to specify application/excel opens an excel plug-in inside the browser which poses a problem becouse the excel has links to pdf file that obscure the plug-in.     - User Account Security Hi I'm trying to design a web application where people can create user Ids and passwords while signing up and then use that information to login to an account. (I know, very basic). I just can't get my mind around how to make this system most secure. the user id and password is verified at the time of logging in and at that point, I would like to create something like a session key before openning the new page. I basically don't want to start the new page by passing regular parameters through the URL because that's very easy to manipulate and break. Can someone give me some information about creating a secure system like this and/or forward me some useful sources?? btw.. I'm using, IIS as my server, ASP.Net and VB.Net. The server is UK date format (dd/mm/yyyy) I have a small calendar that changes the day of the month to a link if an event exists for that day. I start off on day 1 of the month and use a loop through the month until the last day. Each run through the month queries the DB to see if an events exists with this sql: sql="SELECT ListingsID FROM tblEventsListings WHERE StartDate <= #" & DispDate & "# AND EndDate >= #" & DispDate & "#;" The DispDate is generated as part of the loop and is producing the date correctly. My problem is that if an event has the same start/finish day (single day event) then it gets missed. Also, an event that runs over a couple of months seems to randomly be displayed. eg, the calendar will show an event exists for 4 days, then 5 days of no event then events exist for the rest of the month. Help, I am using an encryption routine that occasionally will encrypt a string using some extended ASCII characters (ASCII code > 128) I am wondering if there is a reserved character in VB that signifies the end of a string of characters. Testing things out under different browser security settings I ran into a problem. We have an ASPX (C#) webform which hosts dropdownlists, textboxes, grids, checkboxes, etc. The users want to: #1 - "FREEZE" the entire webpage contents (and state) #2 - move IE browser to another URL (possibly several URLs ... maybe even terminate the session and restart another session an hour+ later) #3 - but eventually to return to the original FROZEN page #4 - and .... shazam .... everything is exactly like they left it I know I could write code to save the contents and state of each control into the database ONE CONTROL AT A TIME. Then reconstitute the form later ONE CONTROL AT A TIME. But that would be SOOOOOO much work. Does any know how to hide the audio media from the page or embedded file the
way flash does?

Explain.
I have 5 MP3 or WMA files in hosting service
and I want the user to select them for playing
in the embedded windows media player in a asp page
I know how to hide the control of the media player
but by looking at the source of the page you can tell
what file is playing and location of it cutting and paste
link on the browser then anyone can still it and that what I want to avoid.
I was trying to do it with flash but I am not good at it so gave up and
trying to do it in just plain .ASP

Can this be possible.?
