    - Very easy: difference between aspx and asp Hi there, I am quite new in terms of server side programming. I understand how asp scripting works and how you put <% %> around your server script. However this is .asp .......what is .aspx? is this the new version ASP.nET? I dont understand how it works when i create a new aspx project in vstudio.net and i create a aspx page in design view. I add a button and then double click it to add code to that button. I dont see any html code around it?? In an asp page the server side code is surrounded by html code!     - User dependant css I am developing a webapplication for a company holding stocks for a number of customer companies. The customers can order parts via this new appliction. My application is linked to each of the customers' home pages. I want each user to 'believe' he still is in his company's pages by changing logo and i.e. backcolor depending on company. A person from company A will see his company's logo and colors and a person from company B will simultanously see his company's logo and colors. Can I achieve this with css. In that case How?     - Hyperlinking in a returned recordset I have a customers table in my database (SQL 2k) with a column called [E-mail]. What I would like to set up (if possible) is to have the ASP page, as it returns the requested recordset, if it has an email address to display the email address as a hyperlink (i.e. mailto: someone@somedomain.com) while showing the email address so the end users can just click on the email address field and have it pull up a new mail message with the To: address filled in.     - Cannot view asp Hi I've got IIS installed and running on Win 2000 Professional. However it seems that I cannot view asp code. To test I've used the good old "Hello world" example. When run through localhost I'm met with page cannot be displayed. When run through c:\inetpub\wwwroot, I'm met with a blank page yet I can view the text in HTML. I've checked my properties for home directory and I've got TCP port 80, execute permissions as script only and application protection as medium(pooled). The local path address is correct and its set to Read, Log visits and Index this resource. I don't know what's going wrong so any help would be much appreciated.     - ASP/IIS communicating with a VB based executable on the webserver. I am test developing an internal webserver, on Windows XP, and IIS 5.1, with ASP and MySQL. One specific page is created from user input and database records in previous pages and presents a page with customised data and a webform. It then takes input from the form and session variables and passes these to an vb exe in the the wwwroot using the from http://localhost/example.exe?testparameters. The vb exe takes the command line parameter input and does its thing and it all works, but I am aware this is a very insecure way of doing this and I implemented this only as a quick workaround so I could test implement it all then refine it for deployment. My question is, what is the best way for input to be passed from a web form to an vb executable for it to do its thing. The exe will eventually preferably run as a service, or at least all ways be active on the server, and not starting for every request then ending, as I was hoping to allow for sorting and queueing of requests passed to the exe, before they are executed. Obviously a model where the exe takes the input, does its thing, then ends is not helpful. I'm open to any and all suggestions, including completely different approaches. I've heard of using COM or Active-X some how or other, but I wanted to get some ideas before I commit myself to one route or another.     - Newbie to ASP After the server processes the page, the server sends a text document down to the browser. I'm wondering how (in what order) does the browser interpret the text document.     - ASP problem with the Oracle ODBC driver OK, I had a problem that I've now fixed but I can't really understand what was causing it in the first place. I have an intranet site that uses basic authentication to allow users to view and update information from an Oracle DB (ver 8.1.6 -- ancient, I know). Anyway, the site worked fine as long as the machine accessing the ASP page was running Win 2k but when an XP machine tried to view the page, the client got an error: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005) [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12640: Authentication adapter initilization failed I tried googling the error and ran across a post that suggested using the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle rather than the Oracle ODBC driver. I made the change and things are working fine now. I guess my question is why did this happen? If it was really an ODBC driver problem it would seem to have occured regardless or the OS of the requesting machine. If someone enters the wrong username/password, the web browser returns this error: Provider error '80040e09' Permission denied. /ct/useradd.asp, line 45 I would like to be able to retrieve this error and present a "You have entered invalid information.." page.     - ASP to Excel Guys, I have been killing myself over this one for a while and can't find what is wrong. Here is the problem... I have an ASP application that claculates certain values. It used to be in Excel and due to complexity of formulas, I couldn't implement Goal Seek function in ASP. To make Goal Seek work, I dump numbers from ASP into Excel, run Goal Seek in Excel and then pick up the results from Excel. This works great on Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 Pro. It doesn't wanna work on Windows 2000 Server. Same permissions, same everything. It just hangs up. If I try to open the workbook in Excel after I tried to run Goal Seek in ASP, it does tell me that it is opened exclusively by IUSR account. So, it seems like it is able to open the workbook. I have a script that searches all the html pages by the product ID. I am able to find the necessary page where I will need to update the text, but I am having trouble searching and replacing within the document.     - TRULY disabling ASPBufferingLimit for file downloads I have a website that (like many) allows users to download large files. Some are up to several hundred MB in size. The problem is that since switching to IIS 6.0, the size of the file is limited by the ASPBufferingLimit, and it's size seems to be limited to only 4294967295 bytes. That's pretty big but it's not quite big enough and I need to disable it. Some people have recommended setting it to -1 via: c: cd C:\inetpub\adminscripts cscript adsutil.vbs set /w3svc/1/aspbufferinglimit -1 but the -1 doesn't really "take"...IIS keeps it at 4294967295. Setting it to 0 does "take", but then IIS returns nothing (0 bytes). How do I disable or workaround this security feature in IIS which is not allowing people to download large files? Thanks. I use the following simple code: rsForum ("Date") = "" It give me error when i try to run the asp and do an update. the error is Error Type: Provider (0x80020005) Type mismatch. I think because the datatype is Date/Time and not text so I cant like that straightaway update it as empty strong.     - Newbie question... Executing code when a button is clicked... Hello there.. I am completely new to ASP and web programming but I do program in Acces and VB so know how to program... There is a small project involving ASP going on here that I somehow got dragged into. SInce I do not know anything abotu it, I downloaded a product called ASPRunner which allows you to connect to a DB of choice using an ODBC connection and it automatically generates a series of ASP pages which you can then run. We have a test web site set up on our IIS server to play around with. SO, this worked good, but now I want to make some changes like provide data editing and be able to add/modify buttons and the code behind them. We do not have an ASP product like ASP.net isntalled here and as such have used Visual Studio .NET to open one of the ASP pages that were generated by ASPRunner. Since there is no "form" per se - as compared to what I am used to (it's all text in the ASP page) , where do I place code that I want to run when a user clicks a button or enters data in a particular field? For instance, as a test, I located a line defining buttons in one particular ASP page. I then duplicated that line and changed some things and when I ran the project - low and behold, there was my new button. Now my question is, I want to have something happen when that button is clicked - something real simple - like display the user a message that "button was clicked". Here is a button definition line I added... input class=button type=button value="Test" ID="Test1" NAME="Test1" How do I reference this in the code somewhere so that when it is clicked, the code to display a message will run?     - IIS is not running ASP.net 1.1 version Hi, I have Xp prof, IIs 5.1, .NET2003 on my machine. I had the error "Visual studio.net has detected that the specified web server is not runnning ASP.Net version 1.1. Yow will be unable to run ASP.Net web applications or services." in .NET 2003. I fixed it by running the IIS mappings for ASP.NET, aspnet_regiis -r. But I figured that my IIS had some issue and I had to register the dll for IIS. After doing that my .net is throwing the same error, "Visual studio.net has detected that the specified web server is not runnning ASP.Net version 1.1. Yow will be unable to run ASP.Net web applications or services." I ran the aspnet_regiis -r again it is overwriting the 1.1 .net framework scripts but the error in .Net is not fixed. I know my webserver is running Ok because I can develop ASP pages using Visual Interdev and my default website is running fine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.
